Fear of failure is something that has plagued me my whole life. But I'm trying to not hold myself back so much and realising, with the help of the Charles Bukowski, that it's not as scary as it once seemed.

dude, from my standpoint, your'e the realest most genuine human being I've ever met and you are the one in many rare people that I would consider worth talking to. you seem so philosophical and self aware, compared to everyone else my age who refuses to see life from a growth and self-reflection perspective. your videos help me get through tough times, just by knowing that I'm not the only one thinks about stuff like this all the time.

I look at it this way. I was in cross country. (Long distance running). We had this kid show up one day mid season and he was going to run with us. He tried. He ran out ahead of everyone on our warm up his first day. He ran about two city blocks. Then he suddenly was walking and gasping for air. By the end of the week the kid quit. If he would have accepted failure and embarrassment and just kept coming in he probably could have been better than all of us. Don't strive and burn yourself out. At the end of the day quitting is the real crime. Keep coming in. Even if you suck.

You did it. You made me realize Bukowski's poetry has moved mountains, one person at a time. Your video also reminds me of the the Samuel Beckett quote: "Ever tried? Ever fail? No matter. Fail again. Fail better."

Hey man, just came back to this, it's a banger! One thing I thought was interesting though is being aware of how those objectives are generated by the world around you. I'm thinking of the way people educate themselves to get a job nowadays whereas before an education was the goal in and of itself. Obviously that's because a lot of jobs now need that education. It's a similar process to forgetting the objective and focusing on the action, but I think there's a material difference between focusing on the action and making the action it's own objective. You could play the guitar aiming to get better, and refocus yourself on just playing, or you could drop the whole objective in and of itself. Just play the guitar for its own sake. So often when I do things I have the objective of being good at that thing, which is kind of informed by the way society tends to value skill and ability because meritocracy is such an unquestioned good today. I've found it way more comfortable to be happy in being mediocre or bad at something, and just approach tasks like I do singing in the shower. You don't do it to prepare for recording an album, it's just kinda fun.

agree entirely!! Learning to reject perfectionism/outcome dependence and embracing doing things because they're 'kinda fun' seems to get harder and harder as we grow older

Bro from 5:30, I literally cried. Right now, many people are embarrassed to show these moments. Everyone wants to show only the great part, that they are the perfect figure, they never make errors, everything they do comes with only one try and done. You are the honest and genuine guy :) Great video.

So cool i found this video. I literally just yesterday wrote out a script for a video i plan to make thats very similar to this. About how following your dreams is really hard because a dream can just be something you look to for hope right up until you actually do it. Then its scary, because you have the chance to actually fail. Its not just this perfectly preserved idea anymore. But the best way to get through the fear of the possibilities instead of being held back by them, is to just.. do the thing. Without thinking too much. Just push right into it. Ive always wanted to make youtube videos since i was young. But ive only ever made a few. Ive let the fear of failure hold me back cause in my mind id rather never fail than risk failure while trying to succeed. But im going to push myself to just do it, regardless of how it works out.

This is totally what I am going through. I did some hobbies in my teens and now am 22 and feel like I don’t know what I want after graduating college. I am kinda scared of wasting my time and because of that paralyzing me, I am wasting time. Need to get out that loop and go try shit.

I don't know if that's what _he_ meant, but the insight is crucial. Yes, that's the fear that stops many. I've overcome this. But it's as if I have to each time anew. The tricks the brain plays on itself are those SC impulses I'm talking about. Sometimes it's like that guy in the red suit that appears on one's left shoulder in cartoons.

Really helpful video, but I don't think this is what Bukowski meant by "Don't try". He meant something like, if you have to TRY to care about something, then maybe you don't care about it at all. In that case, don't try. "Pursuit of wonder" did a great video on this.
