Really interested in these after watching this. Looking at a second set of open backs to go with my Focal Clear OG. I had sundara, xs edition and nano on radar. Looking at fund me page and cost theres not much $ difference at all in AUD between these 3 and the verum 2 and i do like a bit of bass as I predominantly listen to metal I can listem to most hifiman here at A2A Melbourne so buying verum 2 on reviews alone is nerving. Any thoughts on verum suitability with metal? The clears are great, I would want similar not identical, but definitely greater staging
@PassionforSound6 ай бұрын
I've just lent my Verum 2 from the review to a channel Patreon member who loves metal and he's a fan. The bass impact will definitely help to keep those kick drums energetic and fun, and then you can just add one of the ported pads.
@Boss-wy2ch6 ай бұрын
@@PassionforSound Thank you for responding, much appreciated. You mention the kick drums and the that gives me confidence as you do want those kick drums being impactful as well as the treble not being harsh. Metal done wrong can be a painful grimacing experience. I think for due diligence I will still listen to the HIFiman stuff and maybe the Patreon member will chime in and share their experience with the Verum 2 also. The Kickstarter ends 31 May, its roughly $650aud for the 2 pad option pack and includes shipping. The risk after that is all on me naturally with any issues I may encounter and warranty. Another consideration. But right now they are high on the list. Thanks again mate.

I love ATA in Melb - I’ve spent hours there listening to cans and I’m a massive Hifiman fan!I I have had Edition XS and did love them and have listened to pretty much every Hifiman open-back set to date. I now have HEK Stealths and for me, are one of the best headphones on the planet right now. I'll get to sound soon but the Verum 2s look great and feel very comfortable (although they can pull hair when removing so be aware of this). The supplied XLR cable is akin to the VHS players from the 80's (remember the yellow, red and white RCAs?). Update your cable. For $650 with 2 pads (ask to get magnet ring supplied in both pads as changing ring was a pain (I thought I was going to rip outer lip, but I didn't Lachlan haha), these are bloody good headphones. As Lachlan said, I’m 75% metal and 25% hard rock, with a love for Power and Speed metal so it’s hard to get cans to handle the frenetic pace without getting “muddled”. I’ve listened to $5k Dynamic drivers that can’t separate the instruments at speed and let me tell you, these Plananrs can easily! Through the Fire and Flames doesn’t get squished together. The drums, Herman’s guitar, keys and bass are all there and separated well. They sound great both on a good solid state amp and both of my OTC tube amps. They aren’t bass monsters but certainly have enough for me (being a bass-head) and the ported bass pads definitely add warmth and more bass (listen to Bobby Bass - these go low with the bass pads). The stock pads have a little brighter sound but have a fraction extra detail because of this but you could use stock pads and then EQ a bit off bass added. You’d keep the treble detail by doing this (but on many tracks with bass pads, I don’t feel that I’m losing detail from the stock pads - just noticing this as I listen now). But they aren’t in any way too treble heavy and in fact, bass, mids and treble are all tuned well. Soundstage is good (Edition XS is bigger but I prefer the sound on these) as is timbre (they sound natural). Honestly, for $650, these are excellent cans. I have a few sets of different headphones so don’t “need” any more but If I didn’t, I would buy these in an instant. IMO, these are way better than Sundaras, better than Edition XS and could probably compete with or even surpass cans over $1k. And it goes without saying (but I will anyway) that the better the chain you have, the better these will sound. They scale very well!!! Hope this helps,

@@andrewkateb hey man, thank you heaps, this certainly helps, I listen Dragonforce too but am more into Thrash and Death Metal, old and new but really TBH listen to all genres. My other open backs are Focal Clear, I really enjoy them, I would like a bit wider staging hence the chase for another set of open backs. I am yet to listen to the HifiMan Sundara, XS Edition or Nano, but in your opinion do the Verum 2 cast a wider sound stage than those? If so then when I listen to them I know what I am mentally comparing too. Cheers! and thanks to Lachlan for loaning them to you and for your input! .....If I order and its looking more and more likely, I'll keep my hair tied back 😂and I'll ask for two sets of rings thanks for the heads up!! 👍

It's a tricky one, this. There is no doubt that the Verum Ones were an astonishing achievement by Igor, and that achievement deserves celebration. We should absolutely be encouraging start ups in the hifi world. But... The subsequent issues were very much of his own making. Perhaps the stress of setting up a company at great personal financial risk got to him. And now, of course, working in a war zone. Perhaps not. Some of his views, unpleasant though they are, are not unusual in the former Eastern Europe. However, he has apologised and as far as I know has not repeated his behaviour. I wouldn't presume to get inside his head. So on a personal basis I feel he deserves a break, and I have pre ordered a pair. I sold my Verum Ones and almost immediately regretted it. I have never heard headphones with a more open presentation and soundstage. I wish him every success and hope he can be welcomed back into the community. After all, being a bit of a dick has never disqualified people in the past...

The blatant better performance pushes me towards the verum 2 but I also intend on making this purchase to enjoy listening to music for hours on end as well as music production. I don’t want to be ear fatigued after an hour, sorta kinda love bass and would like to be able to use them for general media consumption and gaming. I’m considering the 1s for the warmer sound but hate the idea of paying the same for less extreme hardware. Both are a steal for the price to performance but idk what do you think?

The Verum 2 isn't fatiguing or u enjoyable - just not quite as easy going, but a quick pad-roll could probably change that. It's a hard decision to guide you on beyond that, but I do think you'll be very happy regardless of the direction you choose.

It looks like these perform very similar to the Ananda Stealth overall. The Ananda Nano had a bit too much bite in the trebble for me so I stuck with the stealth, as they were a little more tame in this category. The one thing I see that I like about the verum that I just can't do as easily on the Ananda is pad rolling. I love pad rolling, as I find that it is easier to find the exact sound I am looking for, but man it is not fun on the Ananda. I didn't compare directly because I feel like the Ananda Nano vs Verum 2 was about the point where the competition started to level out. The Organic is better than the Nano so I suspect it's also better than the Verum 2 (not accounting for preferences around tonality)

Hi Lachlan, is it just me going crazy or does that mic maybe a too-good a job of picking up your mid-sentence micro in-breaths? I agree with you reply on the previous video, much better settings on this but still not as good as your Blue Encore. I think the previous setup with this M70 made me overlook the boosted in-breaths but, going back they are there. I had to go back to the last video with the Blue, again specifically listening for those in-breaths, and they are there but not boosted, and very natural sounding. If you target-listen specifically you can find them but they feel appropriate, whereas with the M70 I perceive them as artificially elevated and "in your face". Overall, an interesting experiment. Do you have any plans to make a video on your mic journey at some point? P.S. I am not implying you should consider any change to your delivery style, just observing the difference in how the 2 mics respond. But I guess the thought will now be in your head... like asking a golfer if they breath in or out on their up-swing JUST as they're about to take a shot :D
@PassionforSound6 ай бұрын
😂 I love that analogy! I think I removed the compression and gating on this video to try and improve the sound. I normally have a light gate on my audio to keep the in-breaths silent, but you're right that some mics pick it up more than others.

Hi Lachlan. Great review, thank you. I'm new to wired headphones and have ordered a pair through Kickstarter. One thing puzzling me is how best to drive the Verum 2? I note you say a dongle will be fine but I'm wondering how much 'better' a desktop dac/amp might be compared to a good dongle. Confusion reigns and any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

I'm glad you liked the review and great choice on the Verum 2! As for driving them, a higher quality source is always better so desktop will beat portable for the same $$. What budget are you working with?

For that money, you could get a Mojo 2 and use that for desktop and portable use. It will be amazing with the Verums. Alternatively, a Geshelli J2S with the AK4499 chip and then a nice amp like a Geshelli A3 Pro would also be excellent.

Anyone want to describe to someone totally blind how to change the pads on these? That's the problem I have with so many headphone makers! They make swapping pads ridiculously more complicated than it needs to be.
@PassionforSound6 ай бұрын
I'll see if I can help... The pads themselves just pull off the face of the headphone (they're held on only by magnets) Once the pad is off, you can feel inside the back of the pad for a metal ring that sits under a lip of soft plastic. Pull out that ring because you'll need that for the replacement pads. Feel your way around the new pads to slide the metal ring under the lip on the back of the new pads until it's fully held inside the lip. Finally, place the new pads against the face of the headphones so the magnets can grab and hold them in place. Just be sure to line up the pads properly if they're angled so that the narrow sides of the pads face to the front of the headphones. I'm not sure how you'd identify the left and right side on the Verum 2 (I don't recall any tactile markings of left/right) so you might need to get someone to help you place a marker of some sort.

Hello Passion for Sound. I just discovered your channel and this video. Thank you for uploading such a wonderful video. As someone looking for a new pair of headphones, I can honestly say you ALMOST have me sold on these Verum 2's. Almost, because I have one very important question. How do these Verum 2 cans compare to the Beyer Dynamics DT 880's? I have owned my DT 880's for, gosh...15 years now? And I still love 'em but unfortunately the cabling has suffered which now results in the sound cutting out intermittently. Pretty sad but it's time to let 'em go and I need a new set of cans. So, are the Verum 2's better or worse than the DT 880's in your opinion? I listen mostly to 80's alt rock and trance.
@PassionforSound6 ай бұрын
I own the black, limited/special edition of the DT880s and the Verum 2s are way better from a technical standpoint. However, they don't have the bass (or the v-shaped tuning) that the DT880s have.
