That's where you are wrong, if barca can't gather attention and excitement around them then they can't generate revenue, if you can't generate enough revenue then laliga lower your wage cap even more, and do you think, pedri, Gavi all these guys will be here for the next 10 yrs with below par salary than in other European clubs and not fighting for titles for the next 10 yrs like man United. United are about to offer a contract renewal to an average player like rashford because PSG are trying to get them and that is so stupid to keep that guy, but atleast they have the money to do it, at Barca there isn't a billionaire owner to pump money in even if the club isn't doing well, If we can't create excitement around the team and we don't play dominating attacking, attractive football and win games then you can't even full a quarter of the seats in campnou because the Barca fans expect the team to play attractive football and win, that's why under koeman during his last month's we had such low amount of fans at the campnou and if can't fill the biggest stadium in Europe then we can't make money as well. So this trusting the youngsters plan would have gone to shit in 2 years if the team isn't competing and we will become like united. Rightnnow pedri Gavi and all these youngsters are not only learning and developing their own game but they are learning how to win as well with the help of Lewandowski etc..And like I said, if we don't compete and we don't fill the stadium, we don't make money, we don't have a billionaire owner to pump in money even if we don't generate as a club itslef like the English clubs

I'm not saying that we shouldn't sign anyone, but instead of Lewandowski or raphinha, we could've gone for a left back, a right back and maybe Kounde could've been our big signing. @@harshvardhanparmar2000 take the example of Liverpool and Arsenal. Or just the example of United that he used, generating money for such big clubs isn't difficult and it doesn't take many accolades to get the fans back on board. However this focus on youth whilst paying back the debt is what Arsenal did with Wenger after building the stadium. They're still feeling those effects but I guess Arsenal didn't have the same level of pull Barcelona does and perhaps have a better core of young players. (500 mil pound sale deal was meant to only be 400 mil till barca paid another 100 mil in the deal thru a front company to make the books appear as they got 500 mil profit). This would be illegal because it's an act of market manipulation to make trading with Barca more worthwhile due to having a lagrer source of income, it's fudging up the books by magically adding 100 million to their pot to spend... and it runs the risk of tax evasion since Barca hasn't had 65 mil of that 500 mil investment be paid off in capital gains tax...

Barca fan since 2002 here, don’t let us down Alfredo with this explainer video. Am a little disappointed that Alfredo didn’t mention Barca are establishing a wage structure where nobody earns more than 10 million (base salary) with performance related bonuses. A stark comparison to the previous administration who thought nothing of handing out contracts of 20 million or much more on long contracts. And they have been trying to sell De Jong this season with youth talent from Barca B being given more of a chance in the first team than the previous administration. From what I’ve observed Barca are returning to their previous values of signing players that bring something they don’t already have from their own reserves. A really clear example of bartomeu’s misguided transfer policy is his pursuit of Philippe Coutinho. Even before Dembele had been signed to replace neymar Coutinho was the player bartomeu desperately wanted at all costs. Dembele’s first injury gave him license to pursue Coutinho in January. Something about that situation that had gone under the radar is that within the squad Barca already had a player that had demonstrated capability of covering for Dembele - Denis Suarez. A player who had put in some very impressive performances early in the 17/18 season that to a casual observer put in a strong claim for continued first team involvement. However he was dropped without explanation and essentially frozen out of the first team for no obvious reason. At the time there was talk of selling him for 30 million euros to a premier league team and it seems clear to me bartomeu hoped to flip him for a profit to fund a move for his preferred target in Coutinho. Suarez didn’t move, determined to fight for his place and the lack of game time caused his confidence and transfer value to drop. After his underwhelming loan spell at arsenal I’m sure premier league fans have no clue that he was at one stage very highly rated and was a very exciting prospect. I’m of the opinion that Denis Suarez along with other similar players could have contributed much more if given more opportunities and he could have have eliminated the need to sign Coutinho entirely. Denis Suarez was a lot more comfortable playing on the wing or as an interior while Coutinho wasn’t particularly great at either role. The role he did excel at was one that didn’t really exist in a 4 3 3 formation and Barca always labored in attack in the biggest games with Coutinho played at LW. Bartomeu’s insistence on paying over a hundred million for star power rather than a player that has the qualities needed for the role they need to fill (in this case as a winger) has always been baffling. He signed Malcom who is a proper winger and then proceeded to not play him even when it was clear Coutinho wasn’t working out as a winger.

With this saga, i have come to the realization that most people especially those so called sports pundits don't know jack shit about how la liga and most clubs like barcelona are run.... and the funny thing to is that it's not even hard to know all these things, you can just go to the official websites and you would see all this. FC Barcelona like Real Madrid and Atletico Bilboa is a fan owned club, that means they don't have some billionaire somewhere we can just pump money into the club, they vote on who can be president to lead the club. That means they need avenues and assets to generate money to fund the club and when they are going through financial troubles they liquidate some of these assets or invest with some of them. FC Barcelona has a restaurant/cafe called barca cafe, a skating rink, museum, sports center and other assets. The club is a brand and a big institution which has a basketball, futsal, rollerskate hockey, ice hockey, field hockey, handbol, rugby team and some other sports team. The Barca academy even produces players for all these sports. the Barca studio which they have sold some shares off to help the footballing side was created not too long ago around 2017, 2018 i think with 4 million as startup.... it wasn't generating a lot of revenue as the other asset so even Bartomeu wanted to sell the whole thing for 50 million when this whole pandemic and financial mess begun, so selling those 25% shares now is seen as an investment to generate more funds from the studio and even after some time Barca gets back those shares. I'm not saying selling those shares is good or bad... people need to look at the big picture. Barca is even about to build the Espai Barca which has office spaces, hotels and restaurants just so they can generate more funds for the club. La Liga has it's rules which all clubs must obey whether big or small, at the end or beginning of each season la liga looks at your revenue and tells you how much you can spend on wages, how much you can spend on buying players, how much you can spend in general, they give a ratio. If your wage bill is higher than the ratio they gave you, you have to sell players players to free the wage bill. That is why the new board of Barcelona has established a new wage structure where nobody earns more than 10 million or so (base salary) but your wage can increase with performance related bonuses

Alfie, I just had an idea atching this which is a great video btw. But, when I saw how much revenue MNU made last year, it made me think about their current finances and what the Glazers have done by taking money out the club. I would be interested to see if they could have paid off their debt sooner through revenue and player sales etc. Maybe something to whirl around the noggin to explore further. :)

I’m actually not that upset by the levers, since they each have long term financial ramifications, a risk that the club decided was worth it. What IS disgraceful is the coercion of players into taking pay cuts, deferments, or in FDJ’s case, making it public that they want him gone, all while bringing in new players with all this newfound money. Not even legally binding contracts seem to mean anything to them.

If the contracts are deemed illegal would that retroactively make the players ineligible for the seasons since they were signed? And if it's Barca themselves bringing it forth the club is admitting the situation. Hard to see how a club could admit they broke the law/rules and benefited from it without some punishment coming their way.

I think it would be better if they just took the long route and re-build the squad by signing young, but capable players with alot of potential and re-inforce the squad with veterans and players from La Masia as the debts goes down and in a few seasons be back again to a high level. Milan was able to do that and they became the most yougest club in winning the Scudetto in Serie A's history recently. What Barcelona is doing is a VERY high risk and high reward move that if it fails... they will be in an even worst situation than what they are now.

Some factual errors: 1. Licensing & Merchandising was NOT sold. Luma (didn't happen, Orpheus jumped in instead) and Socios purchased 49.9% of Barca Studios which is a separate company. 2. TV rights deal costs only up to 5% of annual revenue, not 10% (as established by 2Playbook's interview with Romeu back in June) 3. Due to La Liga's economic control, the massive losses of around 600M had to be offset by incoming revenue - it's not a problem that goes away on its own, so the middle ground solution wouldn't have worked as the club wouldn't be able to renew the existing players. Also, "a big sale" plan is unfeasible if the player refuses to leave - as is in the case of Man Utd's pursuit of FDJ.

It’s not that surprising that FCB spent so much more than Real Madrid recently. Not only have they been doing so for more than a decade, but in the past they’ve also been known for spending money far beyond what other teams of their caliber were spending. For example, Maradona, Cruyff and Ronaldo were record breaking transfers when the club had between 0 and 1 UCLs and very few La Liga trophies when compared to Real Madrid.

Selling off their long term revenues for short term gain is so ridiculously stupid. Let's be honest, la Liga is not that competitive - they could have cut their wage bill in half whilst building around the young stars like gavi, fati, and pedri, and they would have still been able to qualify for the CL. A few years of that would have helped them get back on a stable footing to then start pushing for titles again. Instead they've sold off their future, and will probably still struggle to challenge for the league or CL, so what's the point? They're going to end up like Leeds did.

@@reuben524 Bayern loaned money (€2m ?) to Borussia Dortmund, which, although generous, was a loan, not the same as writing off tens of millions. The €18m that the big German clubs gave to smaller, struggling German clubs is a different matter, and does show a lot of generosity, but the existence of some of these clubs was at stake. I'm sure that there are instances that go against my OP, however I'd still maintain that what I'd said was broadly true - big clubs tend not to take pity on their rivals, nor do they write off huge amounts of money.

I had hoped Barcelona would take their medicine like an adult for a few seasons. Play their young players and offload the expensive veteran contracts and make smart Moneyball-like signings. Then when they were in a better financial situation they can go back to bigger signings again. Unfortunately, they have chosen to bury their heads in the sand, and mortgage their future by signing away future revenue. They are doing everything they can to give the appearance that everything is great. So instead of pulling the bandaid off and taking a few years to recover, they are going to be constantly bleeding for the foreseeable future. I have a feeling if there are any other major disruptions like Covid the club will be pulled down under the weight of their own debt.
