Күн бұрын

When Bayern Munich sacked Julian Nagelsmann earlier this season and replaced him with Thomas Tuchel, due to fears that their treble aspirations were under threat, they were still favourites to win the Bundesliga, they were still in the DFB-Pokal, and they'd just knocked PSG out of the UEFA Champions League.
Since Tuchel arrived, Bayern have been knocked out of the DFB-Pokal by Freiburg, the Champions League by Man City, and look set to miss out on the Bundesliga title to Borussia Dortmund for the first time in over a decade.
So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at Bayern's struggles, how they sabotaged their own season, and why things at a club nicknamed FC Hollywood aren't always quite as they seem.

Shame Arsenal fell short. But it's been a good season for the underdogs anyway. Chelsea and maybe (hopefully, as a neutral) Tottenham missing out on Europe entirely, either Union Berlin or Freiburg qualifying for the Champions League, one of Everton or Leicester, both big in their own right, going down, while the likes of Forest and Bournemouth stayed up, Juventus hopefully also missing out on Europe, Inter reaching the CL final despite not being fancied as such a contender, and the playoff final in the Championship being between Luton and Coventry, meaning we are guaranteed a fairytale story club in the Prem. I'm sure there's more I have missed, but it has been thoroughly entertaining. Hopefully the title races everywhere will be as good next season as this

yep. the issue was that there was no bargains available, so they'd have to spend big on someone who probably wouldn't be ready made yet, and as soon as Nunez and Haaland were off the market, there was little else. Many clubs had that problem. @DGAMINGDE

You forgot the bizarre press conference in which the bosses of Bayern instead of critiquing their own failures (when Kovac was still in office) seemed to have prepared to attack everyone but themselves. Especially Brazzo, who seemed like a pushover next to Hoeneß. The greatest lines were about Juan Bernat, who they actually blamed for much of the problems. No you didn't misread, they singled out Bernat, a squad player for their downturn. You could actually say it worked because everyone made fun of the bosses instead of the squad after that. I later reinacted blaming Juan Bernat when I had constant problems with a teacher and said that, because we are both strong personalities. I don't think the teacher got the joke, but we actually left on good terms.

Thank you for picking up a suggestion of mine (even if you haven't read it :D) - I hope the Austrian Wunderteam suggestion will eventually get a video too 😇✌. 7:37 this is not correct, Kovac was coach of FC Bayern for an entire season (2018/19) and was sacked in November of 2019 after a crushing defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. Regarding the topic, in my opinion a big issue that led to all of this was ironically Hansi Flick, who is the coach of the DFB national team by now. Hansi Flick played a terrible World Cup with Germany, making strange decisions regarding formation and who to play on the pitch which fooled people into thinking Jogi Löw was still the DFB coach. All the German Bayern players came back from the world cup disappointed, drained, and out of shape. Players like Gnabry and Sané, who were on fire before the world cup, sunk into a big slump. Kimmich said himself how disappointed he was and that he needs time to process that terrible world cup showing, and Goretzka has been playing the worst football of his entire career up to this point since the world cup as well. Not to mention that Hernandez is out for the entire season again with a torn ACL at the world cup. In addition, the skiing accident of Neuer prompted Bayern to sign Yann Sommer from Gladbach, who has not had that many convincing performances in the Bayern kit either and is probably gonna leave the club after this season wraps up. So after the world cup break Bayern lost 10 points compared to Dortmund and after losing to Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen the Bayern bosses had enough and sacked Nagelsmann to get Tuchel before he signs for someone else. Unfortunately, though, Tuchel has been making the same mistakes that Nagelsmann made previously but had since fixed. It seems that Tuchel was not as familiar with the situation as he could have been, making mistakes such as playing Musiala OR Müller (benching Müller always causes issues at Bayern and was one of the reasons Kovac got sacked) instead of Musiala AND Müller, playing with a back 4 instead of a back 3, playing Pavard as RB (which he doesn't like even though he is good at it) instead of the right CB in a back 3, and so on. When it comes to transfers the Bayern squad looked amazing on paper at first glance; however, it is a very unbalanced squad. Since the RB role was often a big issue at Bayern after Lahm retired they now have FIVE (!) players who can play RB at least reasonably well (Pavard, Mazraoui, Stanisic, loaned Cancelo, and Sarr) and they have not signed a proper replacement for Lewandowski. Instead, they relied on a actually very well performing Choupo-Moting who unfortunately has been injured for a while now and they signed a 17 year old Mathys Tel, who is perceived as a huge talent but had not even played 20 professional matches at the point of his signing for up to 30m EUR last summer. Bayern also signed Mané, a player who is not a main striker and that signing is already perceived as a big mistake by now because of several reasons (age, injuries, bad performances, lacking technical ability as you can hear from Bayern surroundings). They also do not have a proper number 6 in the squad after Martinez left the club in 2021 as both Kimmich and Goretzka are rather offensive-minded players. I am pretty sure that we will not see Bayern go into the upcoming season with the same lineup in the management department. This was one of the most insane fails the upper management has ever produced that I can remember, and I have been following Bayern since the 90s.

Perfect summary. As Van Gaal said: Müller spielt immer! Kovacs was not the only one to try to bench Müller. Ancelotti tried it and now Tuchel (I believe even Pep did fir a really short stint). But it always turned out to be wrong.

Dude, I'm so glad someone made a video about this. I have to say, I don't watch ANY sports news or ANY news of ANY kind ever. I finally gained access to club football in a bunch of leagues beginning last season. I watched a lot of teams, all matches in all comps and Bayern was one of them. I had Bayern tagged for the treble long before he got fired. Champions league was on point and not only went undefeated, but they only gave up 2 goals to the worst team in their group and they beat them by 2 goals in that match. The Paris Rd of 16 matches were incredible. The second leg was one the greatest football matches I've ever seen. I like Paris too, but am partial to Bayern. So much talent and professionalism, great sportsmanship, great reffing, the entire match should be shown to people as why football is so bad ass. After that match I said there's no fuckin way they'll lose in either if their 3 competitions. Then I turned on the match against Dortmund and Skipped all pregame shit and was dumbfounded to find out they had a new coach! Before the match ended, in fact the moment I saw this, first thing I said was well there goes the treble. I had a tiny bit of hope with the outcome of the Dortmund match, but then my fears were quickly realized. Out of the cup, out of the Champions League and beat out by City! Aagghh! Lol sorry, good for you though, I believe you said you're a City fan. I like United and Liverpool. Great we'll earned season, but I think if Nagelsmann hadn't been canned, I think Bayern was taking home all 3. Great video! Oh yeah! He is Germany's coach NOW! I hope he can bring them back!

I have been a bayern fan since 10/11 and I have to say that i haven't seen such a lack of passion and discipline on and off the pitch since Niko Kovac was coaching us. And even then, it had to be a bad day. Hopefully we will recover next season because seeing players like De Ligt and Gnabry(in some matches) really does give me hope. Mia san Mia

Correction: Niko Kovac did not only last 6 months at bayern. He lasted a season and a half. Bayern were knocked out by Liverpool under him Durham his first season, and he was fired prior to a 5-1 defeat away to Frankfurt (in November I think) the following season, where Hansi Flick took over

To be clear, the problem wasn't that Toney was gambling - he's not the first player to fall victim to gambling addiction. The problem is that he was gambling on football matches specifically, which as the other comments have noted, presents a clear and obvious conflict of interest.

I said upon his appointment that Tuchel wont last long at Bayern Munich. People forget how terrible Chelsea were towards the end of his tenure. He seems to have lost the magic touch. Also, you cant underestimate the loss of Lewandowski despite how many people try and play it down. His guaranteed goals made such a difference

Letting Alaba leave on a free, selling Lewa and leaving Thiago and not taking any action to sign adequate fresh players to compensate these departures are failures that have to be accounted to Brazzo. To sack Nagelsmann was the wrong and far too easy way out. This crisis is homemade and Kahn and Brazzo should take accountability for these factors.

Honestly, I think that Nagelsmann's sacking will prove the worst decision in recent Bayern history. There's much more to the story than just the simple fact he got sacked despite still fighting for all the titles. Because of the way Julian got sacked and the lack of progress under Tuchel so far, there are several key players who are "worried about their and Bayern's future", such as Kimmich. While a year ago it sounded crazy to think that Joshua might go somewhere else, now it's clearly a possibility. I wouldn't be surprised if Bayern loses a few of their team leaders in the near future, with a possibility of no silverware on the international stage in the next decade or so. All because of the incompetence of the club's board. And what's even worse, I don't think there will be any changes/sackings there, these people's egos wouldn't survive admitting that they made a mistake. Coming from someone who fully supports the club and its decisions since 2007, it's just painful to watch what is happening at Bayern recently.

2007? Then you must remember the Klinsmann experiment. I think this was even a bigger fail. The 5:1 against Wolfsburg was a far greater humiliation than everything they've experienced this season!

Tuchel will fix things long term. Maybe he has already started to shake things up behind the scenes and some of the «spoiled» players are reacting negatively. Long term it is good to identify these players and get them out. Which I back Tuchel to do more than Nagelsmann. It is now a case of «one step backwards to take two steps forwards»

Crazy sacking Naglesmann. They reminded me of the circus that was Real Madrid when they sacked Del Bosque even though he won the Spanish title. Bayern needs to be very careful how they proceed in the future or risk getting left behind in the Bundesliga(slim chance I know) nevermind Europe.

I am from germany, but I am not a fan of a specific club. My favorite sport isn't even football. But I do watch it from time to time, and follow what is going on without going on in the grand scheme of things. Bayern is dominating, yes. That is true, and the club is rather disliked by most fans that aren't fans of it. According to many, they just buy players off different clubs to weaken them. I won't disagree that this happens, what I will say is that every club does it to "smaller" clubs. Like it or not, that is how the sport works for the most part. Some players also want to go to bigger clubs for a chance to improve their careers. The other reason is that most people seem to think that Bayern gets special treatment (for example letting games play longer to let them get an equalizer or winning goal) - I will say that I think alot of the big players get some sort of special treatment from refs, at least it often feels like it, that is nothing new in the sport. In terms of other stats in games, I once saw a statistic that actually disproved some of the arguments. They often win because they have a very stacked roster, I'd say, but even I can't argue that their winning streak of now 11 titles (I think it is, right?) feels a bit much. In those seasons where other teams would have a shot at winning (like the last one) somehow they manage to fuck it up themselfs. There have also been persons in Bayern that I personally don't like but somehow respect. You can't argue that there are some people in the club (like Hoeneß for example or Rummenigge) who clearly know what they are doing and brought the club to where it is today, they (and others) established this dominance. Like them or not, but you can't really argue that they had the skills and knowledge to get it done. In contrast, especially last season Brazzo and Kahn dropped the ball several times.

As much praise Thomas Tuchel has been given for winning the Champions League with Chelsea (and reaching another final the year before with PSG), let's not forget that each of his coaching stints has ended after a fallout with either the players, his assistant coaches or the executives. It will only be a matter of time before he gets himself in odds with the head honchos of the club, the players or even the fans (who might as well suspect Tuchel being a Dortmund agent sent out on destroying Bayern from within as a revenge for poaching Mario Götze, Robert Lewandowski and Matts Hummels all those years ago). And at this point other clubs may be hesitant to even hire Tuchel considering his track record on his CV. On the other hand Kahn and Salimhadzic share the bulk of the blame as well - Hansi Flick quit because of them. They are indeed Bayern legends, but are terrible executives and by the looks of it they might be the architects of Bayern's downfall.

Nagelsmann got the sack not because of the lack of results, but because the football that such a talent team was playing was absolutely horrible. He had lost the dressing room and managed the season terribly, having the peak in November instead of April. And everything is made worse by the fact that he was the only coach since Van Gaal to be given full autonomy. We expected a lot, but in the end watching Bayern brought no more emotions to the fans. He brought the small club mentality to Bayern. The second one to do so after Kovac (see what happened to the same team when he was sacked and Hansi took over)
