Yes, I agree with Louis. Very even tone through my gear here. Just what a player wants.

"How can such a small guitar sound so big ?" I was hoping you would offer a reasonably succinct answer to that question.

Sounds very responsive. Seems only slightly louder with the pick. Compared with your speaking voice through the same mic it projects very well. First listen was on my phone open speaker. Just listened again on my laptop with earbuds. I still feel like my original comment is accurate.

Really well balanced tone Chuck, each string seems to produce the same level of attack and sustain - the pick provides a bit more articulation as would be expected and the overall dynamic is accentuated with the pick as well. One thing that surprised me is the clarity and presence of the fretted notes higher on the neck, I think most guitars lose some projection and overall dynamics on higher fretted notes but this one seems to have a noticeable continuity of quality at all positions on the neck…. Kind of uncanny, what are the contributors to that quality, do you think?

Thank you. I was going for a deep mellow tone on a small steel string and to my way of playing and hearing I feel pretty good about the result. I described some of the build details in another comment, so check that. To put it too simply, vibrating parts built to vibrate, supporting structure built not to. The smaller body helps. A lot goes into getting good results up the neck, not the least being getting the action down low enough to where it's possible to fret cleanly with strings that are heavy enough to provide decent tone. I used light gauge (.012" - .052") phosphor bronze and wouldn't use anything heavier on this guitar. 80/20 basses could be too muddy on this guitar. I listen to the treble (unwound) strings to see if I can get the tone I want. It takes a bit of playing awareness and experience to get the tone you want from the instrument and the strings. I don't get the sound I want with a pick, and I use as much finger as nail to get it finger style. I was strongly influenced by the sound of Johnny Smith in my youth. Later I resonated to Wes Montgomery and Jim Hall's sound(s). That should explain where I want my sound to be.

Beautiful sound, very reminiscent of a Spanish guitar. How thick was the top and how was it braced?

The soundboard is Englemann spruce, which is softer than either European or Sitka spruce. If I remember correctly its about 2.5mm thick but I may have to check that. The bracing is a light X brace that has been squeezed to be oriented more along the long axis of the body. I used single finger braces and a single brace behind the bridge. All braces are scalloped.
