Paul, I was thinking, maybe your pickering tree is mislabeled like your "Simmonds" was 🤣

I personally would rather have good varieties that pump out the fruit and are workhorses and disease resistant and consistent Vs GREAT mango varieties that have super shotty production and sometimes not great disease resistance. Especially if I have a small yard. Gotta show a little love to Pickering.

I love Pickering as well, the trick with this one is allowing it to ripen FULLY on the tree, mine were extremely sweet and flavorful this year. if I could only have 5 trees (which is what I do have now) Pickering would be among them, not only is it a great tasting mango, it is a compact tree, very productive, and ALWAYS produces fruit, unlike my other trees, that have off years (only Pickering and Cotton candy produced fruit this year) it is also precocious, mine wanted to push fruit when it was still in a 1 gallon pot. it's the perfect small yard mango tree. also the fruit do not ripen all at once, so you have a pretty long harvest season great for home growers. The only negatives is, it is a low tree, so limbs loaded with fruit may need to be propped up, 4 legged critters can easily reach the fruit around the bottom, and since these fruit need to be ripened on the tree for maximum flavor, you do not have a long shelf life. you pick ripe and have a couple days to eat. unlike Cotton Candy, I can pick mature green, and eat up to 10 days later.

My favorite mangos are SuperAlphonzo, sweet tart, Jakarta, Pina Colada and Lemon Zest! Every year can be different, and it depends on what mood you’re in at that time!

NDM tastes like nothing when ripe 😂 zero flavor just sugar. Sugar requires a lot less labor than a mango tree. I don't understand growing NDM

Paul you gotta go easy on Pickering 😂 its a nice little tree, tastes great, and reliable producer for especially for inland areas where people don’t want to spray.

I really liked Pickering. There were other “top tier” mangos I just didn’t like or didn’t think were anything special. I also liked Cogshall, but Orlando gardener said he pulled that tree a while ago. Lol

I personally like coconut cream, cotton candy and Glenn but like you say taste is subjective. I haven’t had Pickering yet, hopefully next year my tree will start producing fruit and I’ll be able to see if I like it or not. From what I’ve heard, many people say it has like a coconut like taste which I like a lot in mangos.

Hmmm. I took Pickering , sweet tart, OS, super Alphonso, Maha Ch, to work and Pickering was the majority favorite. I wonder if you’ve really had an appropriately picked and counter ripened Pickering Paul. I prefer them chilled

The mistake some people make with Pickering is that they think that when the fruit turns yellow on the tree, that it is ready to pick, it is not, it will turn yellow about a week before it is even ready, when the stem turns brown,, and a 45 degree tilt pops them off easily they are done. if latex is released it means you picked too soon. took me a few years to learn this.

i haven't tried pickering yet but have a small tree and cant wait to try it. for my subjective taste, florida classic is the supreme mango flavor category with classic citrus . we tried a box of really beautiful good brix mangos from alex and many of them had resin in the mango and for me and my friends and family , we dont like resin mangos . we all detected the resin and that indian/caribbean resin ruins the good beginning flavor for our tastes , and that is why i dont think any of us would fall in love with the indian sunrise mango (its claimed to have resin but the beginning flavor sounds powerful and good) and i would love to try sunrise out for sure! in our taste palate that resin comes off as medicinal, suriname cherry gasoline, pine turpentine or diet sweetener so its pretty repulsive to many american palates. indo chinese flavor is not my favorite but since it doesn't have resin i enjoy them as the next best flavor category after classic florida /citrus. I love sweet tart but i didnt think it was the best because of the indochinese flavor, keitt for me is like sweet tart but classic category it brings tang and sweetness with lil citrus orange. right now my top mangos are ataulfo, keitt, edward, lemon meringue, fairchild, mallika, okrung. the lemon meringue , orange sherbet, lemon zest , pineapple pleasure and coconut creams i got from miami fruit were not super good very low brix but i could tell from the flavor that when i finally get a good one of any of those i will like it and they will all probably be added into my top 20. didnt like fruit punch due to the resin again, had some up to 22 brix so i actually tried a decent fruit punch. personal taste buds are a funny thing, each person is different

From the sound of it, I think you'd really like Jakarta. Try it when you can. Look for it fairly early in the season, May (early) to July (max). It's big, yellow, green and red.

I tried several and my Glenn is still the best for me. Last year I was given several NDM by a friend and to be honest I could barely swallow it. I don’t understand how people are eating it. To me it tested like green potato. Have you ever try potatoes what accidentally got green? I just think some people are not sensitive to some chemicals in the food and don’t notice them. I talked last week to a person and we had a lot of smoke in the air from brush fire. I complained about it but the other person said “what smell? I don’t feel anything “ and it was literally hazy outside.

@@FruitfulTrees Tried CAC and planted a tree, because of my limited space, only reliable good tasting varieties will do, if they suck they get top worked. hopefully CAC will produce for me next year, tree was still to young this year, I know this variety is not precocious. but very productive and has good commercial potential (good shelf life, decease resistant, can be picked mature green and still ripen good etc. ).

One of those is the carrie to me. So many farms say the carrie is the most popular but it gets over ripe too easily, the texture is just like a juicy mush, flavor is nothing special either. I dont understand the hype but its a shit mango.
