Oh God, I remember reading about this in an old MacLean's collection! Gerald Bull, a top engineer in the Avro Arrow program, was later involved in Project Babylon, a plan to build a massive stationary cannon in the desert (it was as useful as it sounds). But then he got assassinated by the Israelis.

The IM-99B BOMARC we had held the same role that the Arrow would have had. Be on stand by to shoot down Soviet bombers. They were not designed for shooting down missiles as stated in the video. Difference though is that the Arrow would have been crewed and actively intercepting the bombers before the entered our airspace like NORAD aircraft (including Canadian ones) currently intercept Russian ones.

I have to say its all pretty devastating to Canadas aerospace industry. Still its not dead and appears to slowly and quitely expand in baby steps. The good news is Dehavelend Canada want to expand out into wester Canada. It was quite a bombshell last yearcwhen they proposed a new factory 40 km east of Calgary. I hope this new factory comes west and they can get to work on their new aircraft models

It was an all weather night fighter, and it was renowned in that role. It was called the klunck due to a distinct thud as the landing gear locked in place. The airliner was a great early success but it's square windows were an undiscovered design flaw. Cracking in the fuselage around the window resulted in decompression and crashes. The time to understand and engineer the solution allowed competitors to overtake it. The Arrow, this was subversion , plain and simple. Canada , my country, we were always try-hards at anything. Always winners.

That was a great insight into the Canadian sense of nationalism, faith in youth, intellectual and technological knowledge - very up there, very threatening. U guys where definitely doing it all right. A similar fate befell the Aussie Govt in their relationship with the Brits during the second phase of the UK/Aus space launches at Woomera, South Australia in the early 1960's. Given the ongoing legal agreement between the two nations, Australia went ahead with it's part of the agreement and built at its taxpayers expense, Launch Pad II at Woomera, awaiting the next launch vehicle, part of a UK - Aust tech collaboration. It didn't happen. To the shock of not only the Australian public and Federal Government of Australia, the POMs had inexplicably shutdown all association with the second launcher series, and never again launched from Australian soil under that legal agreement. So while it is probably completely true the POMs dumped Australia - and at significant cost to Australia, the POMs were probably pressured out of the Space Race by the Yanks to "not be to technologically superior". After all, the US had secured itself as the worlds most powerful nation and countries including Canada, the UK and Australia where compelled to keep there tech under the radar. Hence, of that era, a number of nations young, best and brightest, of intellectual prowess and enthusiasm was squandered due to the reining powers wishes.
