As someone who went to three different public colleges and eventually earned a PhD, this is shocking to me. But, I saw signs of this when I was teaching at both undergrad and graduate levels. I even had pressure from department chairs to change grades because of pressure from husbands and parents of students. The explosion of private for-profit colleges and helicopter parenting also played a huge role. No wonder higher education has lost its value to many.

That and low wages for advanced degrees. I saw guys in my Architecture days with masters degrees from ivy league schools getting paid very little. Now there are a lot of options for people since the internet where maybe an advanced degree isn't worth it when an influencer is making 6 figures and more.

@@Pulse2AM Often times both. Several young KZbinrs I follow, they are in or just out of university. I wonder have they paid off their degrees? They are probably making more as a KZbinr putting out content twice a week than they would trying to find a job in a field related to the degree they took. You think was it a waste of time and money in the first place?

"Explosion of helicopter parenting?" Helicopter parenting encourages kids to _cheat?_ I am 62 and the only thing I have seen explode, is mostly non white humanity. If by that, you mean the explosion of the internet and media in general, allows more opportunity, you are probably being profound. I think you have issues with child-parent relations.

Look. As a former H.S. Teacher (I didn’t last long) I required my students to write papers in their own hand writing about their Summer vacation or over the Holiday break. This was a template of their overall skills. Additionally, weekly exams on the reading material also fostered a good synopsis of where the student was at on the subject matter. When I got a term paper that was way beyond these two threshold base readings, I knew "cheating" was involved. It was an easy call-out. Given the cost of a higher Education, I strongly recommend two year Technical Schools for their cost/benefit ratio in ascertaining a good paying job that one can at least live on without going into incredible debt!

A lot of universities rely more on adjuncts who are paid ridiculously low wages and often have to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. They don't have time to police all their students, and probably aren't that motivated to do so. And students have been told that their degrees are paperwork to get a good job so it's no longer about the education they're supposed to be getting. The ends justify the means.

Virtual learning is NOT the problem. This can open opportunities to students who may not be able to enroll otherwise. The problem lies in teachers reducing (or being forced to reduce) their roles to tutors, assignments that are little more than video game exercises, and examinations that do not focus on the fundamentals. Well said by the guest commentator that we should want the best teachers in the classroom, and therefore not a passive tutor that lazily let's students learn from themselves.

I literally had 1 college student tell me about 10 yrs ago that they used drugs like Ritalin to pass his college exams... literally memorizing everything on an ADD drug so that they can ace the tests. College campuses have become huge drug dispensaries for students or others... They'd also brainstorm together so that they could do their assignments quicker, but wouldn't individually comprehend the course material. And I'd wondered as a student why the grad students who were working as lab assistants seemed so clueless and unhelpful... and I knew why later... 😈

At the large state university where I teach, the vast majority of instruction is face-to-face. Maybe at Harvard they are slackers. Also, state universities are a lot more affordable. As for the cheating, yes it's rampant at places where it is easy to do it. But a contributing factor not mentioned is the dismantling of student accountability at K-12. Students there are learning that they can coast without consequences, and this includes disciplinary issues. Too many parents enable this trend. That's why teachers at that level are leaving the profession in droves. Once these students get to university, the much higher expectations come as a shock, they have not been taught that dishonesty or other bad behaviors have consequences. So they cheat if they can. But, it's actually not that hard to use assessment tools where it's essentially impossible to cheat.
@stuartdryer1352
@stuartdryer1352 Жыл бұрын
@matthewwithee3422 To be honest, it hasn't been all that bad until the last couple of years. But clearly there was a seismic shift that occurred as a result of Covid-19; or, alternatively, this is the culmination of a long trend that crossed some sort of threshold where it became blatantly obvious the last year or two. The performance decline on comparable exams over identical material between this year and even three years ago is stark. We are face-to-face but attendance is way down. By the way, I live in a very large city in the United States, and my next door neighbor teaches at a fairly elite private university located just a couple of miles away from mine. And he has noticed the same thing. His school, without a doubt, has tougher admission standards, essentially Ivy League standards, and yet when we compare notes, we are seeing the same things. It's not cheating per se because as I said I use assessment tools where it's essentially impossible to cheat. But there is a certain disengagement that is really clear, a sort of apathy that I've never seen before. To me, this is the more concerning thing. My neighbor thinks that this may be students finding a new strategy to take care of their own mental health. Maybe. Now after they bomb an exam it's like they don't even care. They don't come to see me, they don't complain, it's like they are numb. Again, this is very different from even two or three years ago. By the way, I teach him a STEM discipline, and most of my students would like to end up in medical school or some other health profession, and it's a fairly upper-level class.

When education becomes a for-profit business, which is the model of all higher education these days, the real product is not knowledge but certificates that open doors to other markets. We should not be surprised that “cheating” becomes mainstream; in this model, it’s not really cheating… it’s working the system. Chinese and Indian students are expected to cheat if needs be when their international money cannot buy them a free pass to that certificate…they must bring home the certificate. Domestic students are thereby left with a hard choice to organise similarly in the face of crippling lifetime debt of school loans. Downstream, we find that the corruption machine that is higher retail education has led to corruption internally (replacing true philosopher/scientist/educators with Machiavellian tenure-track weasels and a permanent underclass of temp-teachers), and in the industries they purportedly serve (corrupt, incompetent career gangsters). You killed public education, you’ve created a nation of amoral jackals and zombies… you reap what you sow.

You wouldn't blame a teacher for turning a blind eye? As a former professor I find that horrifying.I both graduated from and taught at Ivy League schools and yes, the commercialization of higher ed has been building for years. There are many factors influencing this trend, including the Trump effect of normalizing lying. But that doesn't make it right, and professors and administrators who don't care are abdicating their responsibilities.

Flunking a course just means you have to retake it or take a course that better suits your aptitude, schedule, etc. Losing a scholarship because you failed a course means you need to get a job. Weeding out the inattentive will actually help those who are engaged get more from their education. Too many community college and Cal State professors are having to coddle students through to the end of their courses. Fail them and they'll have to grow up (because living at home with mom and dad is doing nothing but infantilizing them). Nobody owes you a career. When a university starts turning a blind eye on cheating, they automatically diminish the value of the degree they award. So the student can have a degree, but it is worth peanuts. And employers know what degree is earned and what degree is bought. Now, on the topic of using AI in exam, it is up to the faculty to adapt the exams to today reality, but I can see older faculty who have tremendous problems to adapt even to online teaching.

The four years will be some of those humanities and liberal arts classes as well as things like more professionally relevant skills, or even trades. No reason electricians and machinists shouldn't be picking up strong backgrounds in the humanities and liberal arts as well. Hey, you need to go to those privately owned colleges and universities to find out the truth, ok! The majority of students who commit cheating are Republicans. They love the mafia 45 and the GQP. They are also loyal to Republican administrations. 95% of executives, directors, and managers of small and big corporations are Republicans and they are experts of cheating and stealing. Luckily, the majority of Democratic billionaires are humane. They are willing to fight for Democracy in this country. Meanwhile, the GQP and its fascist regimes are full of fascist sickos and delusional cults. In fact, bad students become disgusting Republicans. They are all crazy for money and power!
