You will not see a huge return of manufacturing to the US until the US dollar loses its status as the world reserve currency. The status makes the dollar too expensive, and therefore manufactured goods and exports too expensive to be competitive. The reason why the US had both the manufacturing superpower status (along with good paying union jobs) and the reserve currency status back in the 1950s is because most of the world was not yet industrialized, or they were still recovering from the damage of WWII. You can tell how quickly US manufacturing declined as a share of global output when other nations industrialized once again (like Germany or Japan) or industrialized for the first time like China and South Korea.

@@CarlZha I'm not sure even when the US loses the world reserve currency status, that it would have a rebound in manufacturing, considering that so many of the skills needed for reindustrialization are missing, as you pointed out. A lot of those people are either dead or retired. If it happens, it'd take many decades at the earliest.

As a judge of history , We all need to read deeply on the issue from both or multiple side & angles . - It might be difficult to do research , because its almost 50 yrs already . China seeks for mutually beneficial or win-win trading relationship. However, US has the zero-sum mindset, in which they think that, if China benefits, US must be losing. As a result, US started trade war -- which will be lose-lose to both sides, and evidently US loses more.

The US market is not large enough for the capital investment and return needed to create US only supply chains since the rest of the world can purchase direct from China. Therefore intermediate goods shipped from China and assembled in other countries will be the new norm as this maximizes inputs and outputs without using excessive capital.

@ 13:16 , Carl’s argument is circling the drain. Carl says Chinese manufacturers don’t pay the tariff as US importers pass the cost of tariff to consumers. Carl doesn’t follow up with the next logical questions. How does any US importer or retailer benefit from the higher retail price ? Who has been the major proponent or lobbyist to the US government for imposing tariff on Chinese goods ? The only special interest groups that lost money, stake holders, and influence as US manufacturers offshore to China are the labor unions. It is a well reported fact that US companies that have offshored manufacturing to China have earned record profit during the past 30 years while shutting down the higher labor cost of US manufacturing factories. The US labor unions are corporations, too, and they also are concerned about the bottom line. They have lobbied the politicians for tariff against China as well as hired Madison Avenue to smear the value, quality, and production of Chinese products. Essentially, the US anti-China propaganda campaign is motivated by the labor unions.
