We all love to run outside, but this time of year in North America it is winter and for some of us that means extremely cold temperatures. So the questions is: when is it too cold to safely run outside?
Coach Dan digs into the science and tells us when it is too cold to run!

Winter is my favourite season for running (Eastern Ontario here) but I can't believe you didn't mention the most important thing about running in cold temperatures, which is to cover your face! It makes a huge difference by trapping the warmth and humidity from your breathing so you're not getting that chilled dry air straight into your lungs.

Living north of the arctic circle I'd say it's never too cold to run.. At least where I live, but we usually dont get below -40C. But every winter we get -35-38C. And if it's time for my run then I run.

I was running at -10°C (14f) this winter and it felt completely fine, probably it was just above the critical threshold mentioned in the video.

Runner from Texas here! But I recently moved to Fairbanks Alaska. I’ve never run in the extreme cold and wanted to give it a go. (I work outside in the cold everyday) Thanks for the info!

I ran in 5°F around Christmas time... It was BRUTAL! Made 20°F feel better the next day though... And yes, I brought the intensity down...

I suffered from cold induced asthma and so never ran outside in freezing temperatures until this year. The addition of a knitted gaiter and ski goggles to my kit made all the difference in the world. I've now been outside on a run as cold as -27ºC, -34ºC with windchill. Granted, I was wearing 2 layers plus an outer shell, but I was plenty warm, as was the air entering my lungs. I was also only going at a 6:16/KM pace, which is Zone 2 running for me. Dressing for the weather can buy you a lot of room, even in our bitterly cold Canadian winters.

Thank you, good information. I'm in Alberta and so the minus 15 was concerning as that isn't very cold in Alberta... -47 last January was fun. But the intensity piece makes sense

Never too cold over here in the UK, you may just wear more & run slower, though it can be painful thawing out sometimes 🥶

Ran in 7 degrees Fahrenheit recently, that was brutal never again. I usually okay with 15 degrees and above but anything below 10 degrees starts to feel terrible.

Walked for 2 hours and 27 mins the other day in -11 degree weather and it wasn’t that bad. I feel like it’s easier to run/walk long distances in cold weather because you’re not becoming dehydrated.

Really interesting to hear the science behind it all. I definitely prefer the cold over the heat but then here in the UK the most we've had is about -4 degrees centigrade so nothing too extreme!

Could you provide a link to the research you cite? In the Utah mountains we have a good sized community that run or mountain bike down to -15F/-26C on the regular, and none of the athletes who do this have notice long term lung problems, and even though performance is impacted our community finds it a situational issue rather a health risk. Thanks.
