Watching Colleen interact with those kids onstage makes me think about how The Wiggles, aka the BIGGEST children's entertainers of my childhood, absolute icons of kids' music, always do fingerguns with both hands at the camera every time they take a picture with children, and in any clips of their show that features kids, they're always standing far enough apart that you can clearly see none of the Wiggles are making physical contact with the kids. They've talked about how they did that so there would be absolutely zero doubt that no boundaries were crossed and the kids were 100% safe. I agree with that commenter; Colleen were a guy, NO ONE would've been okay with her behavior onstage.

This is not to defend Colleen (who I was barely aware of before all this) but simply to correct misconceptions of what it means to be a “NYT Bestseller”. Having worked in book retail for years, I’ve learned that the numbers for that ranking are pretty easily rigged by publishers. They’re based, not on sales of copies to consumers, but on sales to retailers. Consequently, a publisher determined to market a book as a “NYT Bestseller” sells huge quantities to Barnes and Noble and Amazon, most of which wind up sitting unsold. They’re later returned to the publisher as unsold stock, which then earns the retailer credit with which to order other items. Those copies are then sold at pennies on the dollar to remaindered book dealers, who sell them at a massive profit as bargain books. This doesn’t mean that “bestsellers” can’t be popular or sell well, but that the title “NYT Bestseller” doesn’t really mean anything tangible in terms of actual copies sold to paying customers.

I used to be a fairly popular fanfic writer in a fandom, in part because I included femslash and included more realistic discussions of female sexuality in my stories. I had a lesbian fan of my work who was underage come to me for advice on some things (usually stuff like social pressure, friends, general writing, and literature because she also wanted to be a writer). One day, she asked me for tips on writing smut and femme smut. I had to explain to her that while I was happy to give her general writing or even romantic writing advice, I did not feel comfortable giving her advice on writing mature scenes due to her age. (Yes, I marked and tagged all of my fics responsibly.) She was perfectly accepting of that and understood where I was coming from. I was 25 at the time (32 now) and did not even have a fraction of the online presence Colleen Ballinger does. If I knew better then, Colleen has no excuse. The underwear thing is especially horrifying to me.

I'm sure a lot of parents who let their kids watch whatever they want even if it's rated 18 or older are claiming of all things they're offended by this. Or they let their kids play video games that are rated for adults. There's a lot of double standards in the world.

Feeling like this is a good time to say that “grooming” doesn’t necessarily have to lead to sex. I don’t think Colleen was setting out to take advantage of these minors sexually. I think she was using these explicit conversations and too-close friendships to build a relationship with kids and make them feel grown-up-which is what grooming is-in order to get something out of them, in this case free labor & emotional support. Just because it’s not a man having sex with a girl the day she turns 18 doesn’t mean it isn’t grooming and doesn’t make it any less gross.

Hearing Adam, Johnny, Becky, just repeatedly say there were warning signs and they were too naive to see them...while thats TRUE, its subtle "victim blaming themselves" language and just to see the disgust and guilt they must've put on themselves is one of the most heartbreaking things. Every time someone else speaks, my stomach drops. She interacted with so many people, and knowing her own friends or family contributed and encouraged her... people should be feeling the same way about this as any cult they hear about because thats close to what this was, Colleen using her influence and power to manipulate and "frog in boiling water" CHILDREN to sexual content. The fact that there are ADULTS still defending her Thank you for covering this in such detail and so seriously, no drama, no "oh, KZbin" type comments like I'm seeing other people make. this isnt about the platform it happened on, except that it likely factored in to just how many children Colleen was able to abuse for so long

Normally they use language that’s a dead giveaway . But either way I don’t even feel comfortable talking about mature ish topics like what she did to people I know and are the same age as so how she felt comfortable doing it to literally underage victims baffles me . I feel so bad for the victims cause they think they are at fault when they are so not as they are a victim . I swear I’ve heard people commenting on other videos too saying that these people asked her to send it to them and even if that is the case still not ok as as the grown adult you should know better and what you should be doing and shouldn’t . Like giving them life advice for instance is probably ok but doing what she didn’t is not and it angers me and upsets me how she got away with it for so long and hey people thought oh yes it’s the city’s fault not the groomer but the victim like wtf . I believed Adam from the start. He had receipts! Even if he did, as her fans claim, ask for the lingerie, it’s up to the adult to make the right decisions. Of course kids will want something “adult.” It doesn’t matter. Adults are supposed to be the responsible parties to make sure kids are safe. I will never forget when Adam used the analogy about if something like this happened to her son asking how she would feel regarding the responsibility and the age gap. She went total strawman saying to “not involve” her son in any of this with a lot of exclamation points. She either missed the point or pretended to thinking she was all high and mighty protecting her kid. Never been a fan as her content is not for anyone like me :/ At the same time, I do not think she is a true pedo. I just think she’s extremely immature and manipulative.

No one has said that she is a pedo, she is a groomer though This is the definition from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Ugh the dog bite story just riles me up so much 🤬 I got attacked by a dog as a kid, my family was dog sitting and I was in my bedroom between the dog and our cat - I got bit because I was trying to protect our cat from this dog He was a large Rottweiler and bit me on the side of my face - I still have scars behind my ear 20 years later Unfortunately I was the 3rd kid that this dog bit and he was subsequently put down When I tell you that I was devastated by this, I can’t even explain to y’all how incredibly guilty I felt, I felt like it was my fault that this dog had to be killed because I chose to get in his way. Now that I’m an adult I can understand that this dog should never have been in our house knowing that he had attacked kids before and that he was aggressive towards cats , but the guilt has never left me

And honestly, that's what's so sick about the whole thing. It's NORMAL and NATURAL to feel guilty if an animal is hurt or dies because of something *YOU* did, even if what you did was TOTALLY innocent or a complete ACCIDENT! NO normal person wants to see an animal harmed! Normal people feel SICK, SAD and HURT if something bad happens to an animal, EVEN IF THE ANIMAL HURT THEM. Thats because we realize the power imbalance - where we, as humans, understand and ultimately have control over animals, like pets. Normal people feel SAD and awful if an animal was hit by a car and killed- normal people feel HORRIFIED if a healthy animal has to be put down because the animal acted aggressively - even if it was unprovoked, most people recognize that ultimately, aggressive animals were let down or hurt by PEOPLE, which caused them to act that way. So it's NORMAL to feel horrible- even though you did absolutely nothing wrong that caused that dog to bite you. The dog still ultimately died because humans let it down- humans didn't treat the dog properly.. Humans didn't TRAIN and socialize the dog properly. HUMANS didn't project the dog from being around children or other pets- knowing the dog had behavioral issues. Being someone who LOVED a dog, and cared for a dog, who was SUPPOSED to be euthanized because of it's aggressive behavior; but was ultimately SAVED because my family put forth a MASSIVE amount of effort to PROTECT the dog from ANYONE that she could hurt, and protected the entire world from the dog- we had DOUBLE AND TRIPLE protective measures to keep the dog from getting out where she could hurt someone! We had TWO clips rated to 1200 lbs attached to the dogs collar AT ALL TIMES when she was outdoors on a run- to be sure she could NEVER ever get loose and hurt someone. We had AMPLE signs ALL OVER our home and property warning people to stay away from the dog. We called and notified all the companies that sent meter readers to pur home. We scheduled vet appointments when the office was CLOSED, we muzzled her and sedated her, and transported her with TWO LEASHES to be sure she could NEVER EVER hurt anyone. And we did all that because the poor dog was DEEPLY HURT by neglect and mistreatment and horrific circumstances beyond her control- and so we went OVER THE TOP to be sure she had a safe, happy life - and to be sure that the entire world was protected from her. And EVEN IN ALL OF THAT... Very early on- we made a single mistake. We had a child at our house, and although the child knew not to touch or go near the rescue dog... She didn't realize WHERE the dog was, and when she encountered an Akita in my room after opening the wrong door - she mistakingly thought the dog was my OTHER friendly dog, and she was bitten on the hand. I was also bitten, trying to get her free from the dog's mouth. Ultimately- her father took her to the ER - and we apologized profusely and took FULL RESPONSIBILITY. And ultimately- the parents agreed that it was not the dog's fault, and that it was just a horrible mistake, and THEY decided that we were going to take even STRONGER steps to keep the dog and everyone else safe- and that it wasn't necessary to put the dog down, since the dog had never bitten anyone else - and would never be able to do so again. When i asked the father why he was being so gracious - he was clear that his daughter is VERY sensitive and loves animals so deeply- and that as upset as she was about having been bitten - she was SO CONCERNED that the dog would be killed because she hadn't double checked to be sure the dog was the "good dog" that was safe to pet - and he said that if the dog was put down, he was SURE that his daughter would feel guilty and responsible for the dogs death and he didn't want that. The fact that this HEINOUS BITCH - would talk SO CALLOUSLY about a dog being killed because SHE AGGRESSIVELY attacked and HURT THE DOG - and then "innocently" claimed the dog "just attacked her" - fuck that. That's serial killer behavior. That's disgusting and awful and if she feels NO GUILT over having that dog murdered because SHE ABUSED THE DOG- then that's VERY CLEAR TO ME how horrible this disgusting woman is. Taking video of a DEAD CAT and LAUGHING ABOUT IT would have absolutely TRAYMATIZED me as a child if I saw that online. I can't believe she thought that was funny, I can't believe she POSTED that to CHILDREN. Super disgusting.

She's an inappropriate adult and pre-teens love that unfortunately. I think her motivation was purely financial though as was that of all these entertainers who associated with her. She captured a demographic that is quite slippery. I agree with her about 20% that the children's parents should've paid more attention. Her book was terrible. The parents should know what their children are reading especially if they have to buy it.
@rustixolotl3233 Жыл бұрын
Really enjoyed the video, though I do have one small issue. As someone who was groomed as a young teenager, I don’t agree with the idea that adults should never interact with minors in any sense. I think it’s actually important for minors to have healthy interactions with older people online, so that they can better understand when something is wrong about how they are being treated. What helped me most in understanding that what was happening to me was wrong only came when I ended up in a forum talking with someone in their early twenties who had been through what I had and telling me that it was really crossing boundaries, and seeing how well they respected my boundaries as opposed to my abusers. As an adult now for several years, I have tried to be that person for others, in that space as well as queer and mental health spaces. It’s important to see that things can get better, to be able to get advice from older people who lived through these things and can help them see that they too can get through this. I feel the more we isolate minors from adults, the easier it becomes for bad actors to slip by unnoticed, as kids feel special and important and rebellious when they speak with said bad actors, having no reference for what is and isn’t appropriate for an adult to ask of them. I do believe there should be minor-only and adult-only spaces, but I also think it’s possible to interact in a healthy way in public spaces with adult role models.
@saddlerrye6725 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but unfortunatelly it's very, very hard to verify whether an online relationship is healthy or not, especially when you're a child with little experience. It's just too easy to write inappropriate stuff down as "oh, I guess it's normal for this part of the internet" or as "inside jokes", especially when things are just slightly off/weird and not very creepy. Plus you may not actually talk about one circle of online friends to another, so it's even harder for the adults trying to help to catch the disturbing things. If you're lucky and you reach a breaking point before anything truly exploitative happens, you might look for advice (unless you're so ashamed of how stupid and blind you were that you never talk about it to anyone), but it's still so, so easy for horrible things to happen. I think it's better to have offline adult-to-minor relationships, preferably in a social environment like gaming clubs, fan events, etc. where people can check each other and it's harder to get one-on-one time with a kid without anyone else knowing.
