But how do Indonesians feel about this whole practice of having more than one spouse? We hit the streets of Jakarta, Indonesia to find out.

My first thought is jealousy. Cultures in the U.S. where polygamy is also allowed, including polyamorous relationships, will have some individuals that claim they don't get jealous. In my opinion, I think that's humanly impossible. One would start to feel somehow inadequate that your spouse needs a "supplement" to be satisfied.

As an Indonesian youngster, I can say that the concept of polygamy is extremely unpopular for the younger generations in Indonesia. The people who're currently engaged in polygamous relationships here are almost always people from the older generations, where traditions like these that originated from their grandfathers and ancestors still sticks with them. Back then in the 1900's, polygamy was glorified and romanticized, with many men thinking that more wives = larger families, which means more praise and glory for them if one of their many children ever became successful. With the advent and constant improvement of telecommunications and especially the Internet in our country, where people from different cultures can share information easily from the tip of their thumbs, old traditions like these are getting more and more outdated and unpopular over time, as intercultural exchange and globalisation makes Indonesia more progressive.

There is common misconception in people perception in general about Polygamy in Islam. Polygamy is not an obligation in Islam, God offer an alternative for Man " who can afford to divide their attention , divide their wealth and divide their sex life for more than one woman to help the woman who in need for protection, economy, care, love and attention in a legal marriage under the law and obligation as husband." Do not ever think polygamy is an easy thing. Islam forbid Man to do Polygamy if they cannot divide their love, attention, economy and life and forbid for Man to do Polygamy if their only reason is to only seeking sex alone. Islam forbid injustice Man who mistreated their wives or their woman, and will be punish by God severely if they neglected to divide their attention to their wives. As we know Polygamy is a tradition that has been common along time ago far before Islam came. Islam just limit on how many woman Man can married , (usually Man can married for more than 10 woman before Islam came, but in Islam for normal person 4 is the max ). Also with Islam, the rule has been more strict to protect the woman, contrary to people believe . Islam exist to stricting the rule and make Man have obligation to do justice to their wives and have obligation to divide their attention, loves, care and life equally for the woman their married. Woman in nature are very fragile in psychology and physics. There are a lot of woman live alone in need of Man care, love, economy support and attention. Other reason is because human by nature especially Man easily to cheat, rather doing adultery, marrying is more preferable in Islam and in reality. Because having a safe sex with commitment and responsibility is in logic and by nature is more acceptable.

Both first wive and husband was in orphanage in old past , the 2nd wive move out to spain when she graduate from elementary , the 3rd wive move out to central city to get in prestige school and then they were got seperated , and the 1st wife and husband both doing their best to get scholarship in highschool but the first wive got the best one and then the husband had to give it up and doing part time job instead to support first wive money , of course we know how lovely their passion and take care each other but they are never date at all , i actually got crush on her since she also the most beautiful one in my school that time . After many year passed , 1st became an doctor , the husband still doing spinless job , BUT the turning point is when the 5 including me open up reunion plan and we meet again after so long . After that i found out that is the 2nd and 3rd wive confess that the dude was their first love , i take that as joke actually but future said different , 4 of them get married

There is common misconception in people perception in general about Polygamy in Islam. Polygamy is not an obligation in Islam, God offer an alternative for Man " who can afford to divide their attention , divide their wealth and divide their sex life for more than one woman to help the woman who in need for protection, economy, care, love and attention in a legal marriage under the law and obligation as husband." Do not ever think polygamy is an easy thing. Islam forbid Man to do Polygamy if they cannot divide their love, attention, economy and life and forbid for Man to do Polygamy if their only reason is to only seeking sex alone. Islam forbid injustice Man who mistreated their wives or their woman, and will be punish by God severely if they neglected to divide their attention to their wives. As we know Polygamy is a tradition that has been common along time ago far before Islam came. Islam just limit on how many woman Man can married , (usually Man can married for more than 10 woman before Islam came, but in Islam for normal person 4 is the max ). Also with Islam, the rule has been more strict to protect the woman, contrary to people believe . Islam exist to stricting the rule and make Man have obligation to do justice to their wives and have obligation to divide their attention, loves, care and life equally for the woman their married. Woman in nature are very fragile in psychology and physics. There are a lot of woman live alone in need of Man care, love, economy support and attention. Other reason is because human by nature especially Man easily to cheat, rather doing adultery, marrying is more preferable in Islam and in reality. Because having a safe sex with commitment and responsibility is in logic and by nature is more acceptable.

But if anyone chooses to marry and both are willing (including first wife allows) plus treat all fairly, then it is allowed by the state. I'm from Malaysia and what I can say about polygamy, is that it is mostly misused by men to justify their lust. I know several people who practise polygamy, and all their wives and children aren't happy. It is the recipe of havoc for the family. Of course it is allowed, but islam certainly doesn't encourage it.

I think of it like this. You must be selfless if you agree to have/agree to let other party to have other wives/husbands. Like you pour all of yourself out to the other partners and they return you the same, trust each other, think for each other to the point that you don't think of yourself at all because the others already think for you. Wow.... I think this video is misleading. Whilst I cannot say Polygamy is illegal, however, there are conditions under prevailing laws that must be met if a man wants to practice polygamy. Even if one of the conditions is met, the man still need to obtain approval from the legal wife and ultimately court order. And if such man is a Government official, then such person is required to obtain for additional approval from the Government. So, it is not easy to implement LEGAL POLYGAMY. Most of the time, POLYGAMY is practiced ILLEGALLY. The second marriage and so on are not recorded with the State.

Indeed, small group of people still do the practice for good, personal emergency reasons.. (for example the wife couldn't concieve a baby, the wife got mental or another illnesses) but I think most of the people here doesn't have the urgency to add an extra(s). As far as I read somewhere, the Arabia at the time of the prophet Muhammad's era was battered with wars. (Just like every medieval kingdoms and world major civilizations were). They lived in a constant fear of war. And when war happened, men get killed leaving behind their wives abandoned, with a little to no support. And let's not change the fact women were vulnerable all the time throughout our human history, and they still are (to some extent). So they must had made a system where the widow can remarry, instead of just ostracising her and leaving her abandoned. That era was different and above scenarios could have been acceptable and good thing to do. But today, we live in a safe world. Atleast most of us go on with our regular life, without even caring about the war and things. We're safe and sane, so there's no need to have multiple spouses now. I think people just have made different context over the time and completely changed the meaning of why the polygamy was practiced that time.

There is common misconception in people perception in general about Polygamy in Islam. Polygamy is not an obligation in Islam, God offer an alternative for Man " who can afford to divide their attention , divide their wealth and divide their sex life for more than one woman to help the woman who in need for protection, economy, care, love and attention in a legal marriage under the law and obligation as husband." Do not ever think polygamy is an easy thing. Islam forbid Man to do Polygamy if they cannot divide their love, attention, economy and life and forbid for Man to do Polygamy if their only reason is to only seeking sex alone. Islam forbid injustice Man who mistreated their wives or their woman, and will be punish by God severely if they neglected to divide their attention to their wives. As we know Polygamy is a tradition that has been common along time ago far before Islam came. Islam just limit on how many woman Man can married , (usually Man can married for more than 10 woman before Islam came, but in Islam for normal person 4 is the max ). Also with Islam, the rule has been more strict to protect the woman, contrary to people believe . Islam exist to stricting the rule and make Man have obligation to do justice to their wives and have obligation to divide their attention, loves, care and life equally for the woman their married. Woman in nature are very fragile in psychology and physics. There are a lot of woman live alone in need of Man care, love, economy support and attention. Other reason is because human by nature especially Man easily to cheat, rather doing adultery, marrying is more preferable in Islam and in reality. Because having a safe sex with commitment and responsibility is in logic and by nature is more acceptable.

Qur'an puts heavy conditions for it such as the approval of the first wife, and man's establishing equality between/among the wifes. Also, in 3:129, Qur'an clearly says that a man can't be equal between wives. Polygamy in Islam is basically to protect the widows, and to prevent adultery. In Islam it is not encouraged. Yet, if there is polygamy, this is done with the appoval of each party and while each side protects their rights.
