As an Indonesian youngster, I can say that the concept of polygamy is extremely unpopular for the younger generations in Indonesia. The people who're currently engaged in polygamous relationships here are almost always people from the older generations, where traditions like these that originated from their grandfathers and ancestors still sticks with them. Back then in the 1900's, polygamy was glorified and romanticized, with many men thinking that more wives = larger families, which means more praise and glory for them if one of their many children ever became successful. With the advent and constant improvement of telecommunications and especially the Internet in our country, where people from different cultures can share information easily from the tip of their thumbs, old traditions like these are getting more and more outdated and unpopular over time, as intercultural exchange and globalisation makes Indonesia more progressive.

My first thought is jealousy. Cultures in the U.S. where polygamy is also allowed, including polyamorous relationships, will have some individuals that claim they don't get jealous. In my opinion, I think that's humanly impossible. One would start to feel somehow inadequate that your spouse needs a "supplement" to be satisfied.

Philippines here. My neighbor is a Muslim and he has 3 wives. Pretty nice guy, devout moderate Muslim. He has lots of kids, all of whom are well educated. You can see he does it the way his religion meant it to be - - to support a nice family, to bring a happy and comfortable life into this world. I always thought about it. Once you hit a certain amount of wealth, everything in excess is merely a luxury you can live without. My neighbor basically decided to spend his money on raising kids.

Also with Islam, the rule has been more strict to protect the woman, contrary to people believe . Woman in nature are very fragile in psychology and physics. There are a lot of woman live alone in need of Man care, love, economy support and attention. I’m a Muslim Arab from the very bosom of Arabia. From the almost 40 married family members from my extended family that I know, only 1 is married to two women. The remaining 39 are married to one woman, and it’s mostly for life. Out of those 40 or 41 married couples, only one got divorced, and it happened in under 4 weeks, when the young couple came back from their honeymoon. That cousin of mine, is now remarried, and has a baby boy, who’s probably 5 months old right now. That divorce happened back in late 2018, and it was a shock in the family. Marrying two women is very rare, and having three or even four wives is almost non-existent for that matter. Even my grandfather, who passed away in the summer of 1990, was only married to my grandmother, who passed away in the summer of 1999. They sired 8 children, with one of them being my awesome mom, and mind you, my grandparents were both born in the late 1920s and early 30s respectively. I’ve found the same thing in Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Be they colleagues, friends, or people I’ve interacted with during my travels to Muslim-Majority countries.

I'm from Malaysia and what I can say about polygamy, is that it is mostly misused by men to justify their lust. I know several people who practise polygamy, and all their wives and children aren't happy. It is the recipe of havoc for the family. Of course it is allowed, but islam certainly doesn't encourage it.

Each to their own, but at least Indonesia is upfront about it and don't lie to their wives etc. As the men in the interview say "As long as your wife approves then it's ok". Polygamy also is popular in many parts of Asia. After I lived in Japan, I realised how men just keep it on the low and many wives just look the other way. I was horrified when I started asking woman and even my friends about it and they'd say "I just don't want to know about it". Or men say "if my girlfriend/wive doesn't know about it, it doesn't matter" or "physical actions aren't cheating". These words drastically changed my idea about Asia. So I started reading about it and the statistics fit. Plus you start to notice just how big the red light districts are in Japan (and Korea too, though I didn't check other asian countries).

Maybe it's because I'm a woman living in a western country, but as a Muslim, I don't approve of polygamy too. If you wanna be with another woman, just divorce the first. If you want more than one, it is indeed greed and lust. Maybe polygamy was useful once upon a time, when women needed protection and couldn't provide for themselves, but now that women can work freely and don't need to be provided for, they don't owe anything to men and as their equal, have to be respected and loved without being shared.

First and foremost, it is NOT a must to marry more than 1 in MUSLIM community. It is NOT compulsory. But if anyone chooses to marry and both are willing (including first wife allows) plus treat all fairly, then it is allowed by the state. In general there are more women population in this world than man. This gives all women a chance to get married if a man is willing to be responsible for her too. So this is how it is.

Wow.... I think this video is misleading. Whilst I cannot say Polygamy is illegal, however, there are conditions under prevailing laws that must be met if a man wants to practice polygamy. Even if one of the conditions is met, the man still need to obtain approval from the legal wife and ultimately court order. And if such man is a Government official, then such person is required to obtain for additional approval from the Government. So, it is not easy to implement LEGAL POLYGAMY. Most of the time, POLYGAMY is practiced ILLEGALLY. The second marriage and so on are not recorded with the State.

I don't think this video is misleading, they never say that legal polygamy is easy to do. and as you say, it's pretty hard to do polygamy legally, and most polygamy aren't recorded. and it's pretty common to do 'illegal' polygamy in some religious area. some people are just denial and it's hard to proof that it's common because as you say, most of them aren't recorded. :)

Both first wive and husband was in orphanage in old past , the 2nd wive move out to spain when she graduate from elementary , the 3rd wive move out to central city to get in prestige school and then they were got seperated , and the 1st wife and husband both doing their best to get scholarship in highschool but the first wive got the best one and then the husband had to give it up and doing part time job instead to support first wive money , of course we know how lovely their passion and take care each other but they are never date at all , i actually got crush on her since she also the most beautiful one in my school that time . Talking based on the subtitles given, let some of the men in the video have their patriarchal mumbo jumbo. Qur'an doesn't prohibit polygamy, but it doesn't encourage people for it either. Qur'an puts heavy conditions for it such as the approval of the first wife, and man's establishing equality between/among the wifes. Also, in 3:129, Qur'an clearly says that a man can't be equal between wives. Polygamy in Islam is basically to protect the widows, and to prevent adultery. In Islam it is not encouraged. Yet, if there is polygamy, this is done with the appoval of each party and while each side protects their rights. Today, many people criticize Islam about polygamy, but cheat on their partners maany times. This just doesn't make sense.

There is common misconception in people perception in general about Polygamy in Islam. Polygamy is not an obligation in Islam, God offer an alternative for Man " who can afford to divide their attention , divide their wealth and divide their sex life for more than one woman to help the woman who in need for protection, economy, care, love and attention in a legal marriage under the law and obligation as husband." Do not ever think polygamy is an easy thing. Also with Islam, the rule has been more strict to protect the woman, contrary to people believe . Islam exist to stricting the rule and make Man have obligation to do justice to their wives and have obligation to divide their attention, loves, care and life equally for the woman their married. Woman in nature are very fragile in psychology and physics. There are a lot of woman live alone in need of Man care, love, economy support and attention. Just a reminder, some of the answer actually joking, esp when the lady said she’ll let his husband polygamy is he’s handsome (based on my interpretation, she’s joking with her friend). And also, the practice mostly did by older generation, and in the rural area. The younger and modern population has a perspective that polygamy is a sign of disloyal as a couple. And there are 5 religion in Indonesia, they only asked 1 specific religion. So it doesn't represent Indonesia as a whole. I had a driver in Batam who was the son of the 9th wife. His father had something like 36 children. He was about 28 and his oldest sibling was in his 50's. The family was from the Medan area. While in central Java I met a number of people who had more than one wife. It wasn't common, and often the 2nd wife was much younger and poorer than the first wife.

You can rarely find people who do polygami in Indonesia. And the most people don't understand the essence of polygami. Actually polygami is a way to help a widow by husband's death who doesn't have earnings and the man have to be equitable to his wives. But many people did polygami not to help widows, they just do that to fulfil their sexual desire. I personaly agree and not agree to polygami, depend on the reason to do that
