Conservatives are making a concerted effort to purge schools of books written by people of color and LGBTQ authors. But book bans don’t protect kids. They just turn them into ass holes. Part 2 of 2.

When I was in high school, I asked a friend why he thought a particular book should be banned. During the conversation I realized he hadn’t read the book. When I confirmed this he said “I don’t want to read a book that might change the way I think.” I think about that sentence a lot.

That's really disconcerting and disheartening to hear, since you can use that "argument" for anything: • I don't want to get to know the new muslim neighbours cause... • I don't watch news on Israel and Palestine cause... • I stay in my echo chamers cause... And such a shame too, living in an age when information free, accessible, and available from so many sources.

I think they condemn education because of their own insecurities. They feel bad when others seem smarter than they are. They only see two sides, black and white, no grey. It's between good and evil. They obviously are the good so everyone else is evil. They also don't understand that no one else makes them bad. The concept that they choose how they feel based on their own perspective is beyond them. It's always someone else's fault when they feel badly.

When I was in sixth grade we had to read Daniel's Story by Carol Matas, a teenager's perspective of the holocaust. I also complained to my mom that it was giving me night terrors, especially the chapter where the Nazi's cleared out the ghetto... And she straight up told me "Good, it should." We talked, she turned it into a teaching moment about empathy, in class I had some really good talks with my teacher about why it was so important to learn about this kind of thing and I grew. Children can't grow if you shield them from everything that makes them uncomfortable.

In the Fall of 1987, a book store in Williamsburg, VA. promoted its "Banned Books Week" sale by covering its display window panels with black paper, with a small hole cut out on each panel You had to peep through that small hole to see a book of classic, standard literature that once had been banned. The town council found the display too provocative and even suggestive, and they had to take the black paper down. "The Daily Press" had a headline that said something like, "Banned Books Week Display Banned."

I remember seeing an episode of I think "The Twilight Zone" where two parents are very worried about an upcoming intelligence exam given by the government that their young son has to take. You wonder why their worried because the little boy seems to be very smart. We are all better people when we don't ban the thoughts and beliefs of others. When it's out in the open, intelligent parents can teach their children properly with the use of multiple examples. I have a compromise for these book-burning unrighteous-Dominion types. Keep these books in the school libraries, displayed next to the front desk... In a locked case with signs stating "students are banned from reading these books without parental consent." The Karen's get their bans. The Public keeps the books (mostly) uncensored. And the "the Streisand" will be in full effect... This compromise doesn't work for intentionally teaching empathetic material in the curriculum. But at least it works for libraries.

This makes me appreciate my parents even more. My mom NEVER opposed any of the books I chose to read. If there was a topic she thought might be questionable or a bit too heavy for me, she’d read it first or we’d read it together and then have discussions about the books. Sometimes I’d bring whatever I was reading to school with me; I got some raised eyebrows from a few teachers, even a few calls/emails home to make sure my parents were aware of what I was reading. I plan to use that same logic with my own kids. They love to read and I want to encourage them to confront uncomfortable topics in a safe way and open their minds to other view points and experiences.
