What i dislike is being told what to like or desire. We're told what we should like and what is good by all the products and media we consume. We really have to make an effort to think for ourselves of what we truly want . Sometimes it does feel that we're a bit stuck in a hyper consumerist society. If not by all the advertisements, then by society and people. Thanks so much for this video! I hope more people see this,

OMG can we stop recycling this quote over and over. It’s said multiple times on every consumerism video. You’re not original for regurgitating something that we all know and have heard😑

I used to spend lots of my money on books and craft supplies. It has got to the stage that I have physical symptoms like cravings if I don't shop. I hate feeling like an addict. So I've started implementing daily gratitude for what I have. Rather than chasing the next thing. I realise how important food, shelter, friends and family are. I am lucky to have everything I need.

Underrated video bruv this deserves more views. Hope the algorithm picks it up one day so more people can be aware about consumerism.

I'd like to think that we're all at least somewhat aware of all this... but probably a lot of people dont wan't to accept reality. Great video and love the editing!

Yes, because reality is very scary and they are trying to have it sugarcoated. It is because of desperation and helplessness. Though Idk if it really can't be helped

I think that while consumerism itself brings the inherent problems you discuss there is now a much greater issue of increasing poverty. When did it become normal for rich nations like the US and U.K. to have a large number of their citizens relying on food banks? These have proliferated here in the last ten years. Housing costs in the U.K. for even modest homes are incredibly high whether renting or buying, the idea that you could only spend 50% of your income on your “needs” is sadly far from reality. Many here are spending 5O% of their incomes just to cover their basic housing costs, while at the same time energy costs remain very high and people are unable to heat their homes adequately. I think it’s important in these types of discussion to be careful not to mix up the habits of mass consumption undertaken by those with incomes to sustain it and those who are working to simply makes ends meet and do not enjoy lifestyles around consumption. There maybe a truth where debt that has been accrued through consumption causes financial challenges but not all financial challenges people face are as a result of mass consumption but a failure of the market based systems that rely on mass consumption, the issues of supply and demand and the other constructs of a capitalist system that ultimately serve the interests of the very rich but do not serve the majority of the population.

Impressive video, Bennett Fong. Excited to see more content from you. I smashed the thumbs up button on your post. Keep up the fantastic work! Your insights into the psychology behind consumerism were eye-opening. How do you think emerging technologies like AI will further influence consumer behavior and marketing strategies in the coming years?
@bennettfong3 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for your support Keyser! It’s a great question. We’re still very much in the infancy stages with AI. Imagine even 5-10 years from now AI will look exponentially different. I would expect even more targeted marketing which does provide ‘convenience’, something you would see out of minority report. But then the fine line between privacy, intellectual property and convenience becomes even more vague. Again for me it’s all about awareness. You can choose to just accept all the messaging and advertisements coming your way, or be mindful and logically filter what’s useful vs noise. Thank you again for your time and support 🙏

I think that there are a few things that I do want but feel like I need. For example my body care routine is not going away or my basic makeup products but I do need to stop eating out. I’m trying to find a balance. I’m gonna make a list of things I constantly use.

Blocking ads wherever I can. I am also a consumer, but I decide for myself. Buying materials and tools so I can make things. I have spent enough years on this planet to have a concept of a value of things. One crafting company went bust recently. Some items they were selling were sometimes 3x the value of a generic item I already had, just because someone got their logo on it. It was amusing how overpriced some things were. Other times I got a great value there. And because I have always been somewhat anti mainstream, even adopting fashion quite late, I said No to corporate greed and weaning myself of Microsoft, learning and transitioning to Linux. I have even fixed my 15 yo laptop that came with Vista, replaced a broken hinge, cleaned inside, repasted, upgraded RAM and hard disc, installed Linux. That machine runs like new! It has ma y years of service ahead of it. None of my machines will go to the landfill just because Microsoft said so.

I do not care one bit what is the thing or not at the moment anymore. I am not going to impress anyone! I get way more joy at saving my hard-earned money than spending it anymore. We live very minimal and frugal and love it!

I wonder if someone created an Ad that said "don't buy stuff", would it be effective? Are we programmed to respond to messages like advertising?
@stevejacob58893 ай бұрын
The message would have to be tailored to show that the best version of you is one that does not buy stuff. Our imagination goes to us having the product and the message we believe it will send.
