I was waiting for this one. Absolutely love your NF videos. I really feel like you hear every word of his lyrics and you see the depth in them and you're not tip-toeing around subjects. It's easy as adults to rationalize and think about things from a logical perspective, but it's surprising how often we then catch ourselves "acting out", sort of like a toddler with a temper tantrum, because something triggers within ourselves, sometimes because of things we don't even really remember. And sometimes we get caught trying to mediate between those outbursts caused by "irrational" feelings and our "rational" thinking brain. I think NF now as an adult knows that his mom didn't choose to leave, but that there's still a part of him that is stuck in that time and that child-like way of thinking, which I think is totally valid. A child shouldn't have to question whether their parents will be there. I love that he doesn't downplay how much it affected him, and that he feels the right to express that anger and hurt, even if it to some people may sound like he's oversimplifying a very complicated subject. Bu truth is that children can't see how complicated it is. To them it IS simple. Still despite the anger, we can hear every now and then in the song, especially at the end, his adult understanding and longing expressing itself. It's just all disguised as anger. Not intentionally, but because being angry is easier than feeling hurt and abandoned. Especially for a child. It's easy to get stuck in that way of thinking. And sometimes adults get too caught up in defending the adult's actions rather than really listening to the child's view of the situation, even when that child is grown up. I loved hearing your thoughts on this. I've seen some people completely side with NF and some people completely side with his mom's situation, but that shouldn't be a thing. Both experiences are equally as valid. He has the right to feel angry and hurt, at the same time as we can acknowledge that his mom's situation was complex and experienced as out of her own control. And I think you acknowledged that beautifully. NF has another song about his mom called "Mama", but it's pretty new, so if you intend to listen to his songs sort of in order then it'll have to wait a bit. But I definitely recommend listening to it at some point. :) Looking forward to more of your videos!

NF spits lyrics with a vexing sadness. Great reaction. Love your NF reactions. The closing of this pain we see in the song "Mama" where NF forgives her. Such a great observation Dr. Nic that a lot of the images NF showed us was great memories and love. If you react to the song "Happy" it is just as hard to watch. In that video we see the protagonist recalling her life of pain, but she makes a wish and I some say she dreams of a different better life, but I say she recalls better memories of her Mom, not a fantasy. This underscores what I really believe is happening in the video which is how the devil affects our mind with negative memories and even false ones, and God has a way of taking us back in our memories and reminding us of His faithfulness and goodness.

In a 2017 interview with Idolator Nate said: "It’s real. I mean, that’s really me crying. My producer left the room. For like five minutes I just talked on the microphone. There’s so much stuff people didn’t hear that we took out, of me just bawling and talking about memories. It was very therapeutic for me. We picked through the stuff that we felt was the most important." Thankfully he had an outlet for that grief.

You several times said that it was so long after her death that he recorded this. It was not that long. She died in 2009, and this was on Therapy Sessions, which was released in 2016, when he was 25. At most this was done 7 years after her death, probably no more than six, since it has to be written and recorded well before the album can come out. These feelings were at the time still quite raw.

Only just stumbled across your videos and I love your approach! I have a quite underrepresented artist to recommend you - Elliott Smith (you may have heard of him, 90s folk/rock artist, who also tragically died young) - I’d recommend to start with something like A Fond Farewell which deals with the relationship people have with addictions (in this case, most likely heroin). Keep up the good work! :)
