And not just generally, but specifically straws. How many other single use plastics have been targeted like that? Basically everything we were told NOT to do with toothbrushes as children (walk/run around with it in your mouth, using in moving vehicles, etc...) people are doing now with metal straws. Back in the early 90s I remember at least two cases of kids running around with the toothbrush hanging out of their mouth, tripping, and having the brush go through the back of the throat/neck. It's basically a tracheotomy device moonlighting as a straw. I know paper straws disintegrate WAY too quickly, but could we not make them temporarily water resistant with an alginate substance? It would break down in sea water but would make the straw water/liquid resistant enough to get through the beverage. Surely there's a better way that carrying around a human hole puncher.

Funny how somehow 'solutions' to some eco problems are largely immune from public scrutiny. I had been letting my kids use these for a while, but something kept nagging me. Only after watching this did I realise what was bothering me. Metal straws reminded me of the No. 4 Lee Enfield spike bayonet. This was adopted by the UK over the bayonets used by New Zealand and Australia as it was found to be more lethal. I had removed some metal Korean chopsticks from the cutlery drawer because I realised how dangerous they might be, but kept using the metal straws.

Metal straws are simply a bad idea. Not only are they unsanitary, dangerous in a subtle way that actually can occasionally kill innocent people, but they also catalyze chemical changes in the food substances being consumed. Basically, metals are catalysts that cause chemical changes in organic substances, which alters the flavor of the food in routinely unwanted ways. Some of the chemical changes can also be actively harmful, in that it can convert benign and tasty food molecules into potentially toxic substances, or even into carcinogens. For this reason, it is normally not recommended to store leftover food items in metal containers (even stainless steel, which is still a catalyst) in the refrigerator, but instead to quickly transfer leftover food out of metal containers and into glass or plastic containers instead. The severity of the catalyzed chemical changes depends on time of contact between the food and the metal, but even brief metal exposures begin to cause some chemical changes in the food. For this reason, steel food cans (often referred to as "tin cans") come with a thin internal plastic like liner coating the interior, to keep the food from directly contacting the metal surface. Occasionally, canning problems occur, and the thin liner get holes in it, and this causes the stored food in the can to look/smell/taste foul, upon opening the can with the faulty can liner. Conventional plastic straws are much better. Plastic straws that get properly thrown into a garbage can, normally end up in landfills, whereby they are rather benign and not particularly harmful to any wild animals. Plastic straws harmlessly buried in a landfill do not actually cause environmental contamination or contribute to microplastics in waterways. It is basically only the straws that people litter with, that cause environmental problems for wildlife. The root cause of the problem is human litter bugs, not plastic straws. Additionally, reusable metal straws are not normally provided in fast food restaurants with drive through/takeout windows. Instead, plastic straws are usually still provided by such types of restaurants (where people drive through, consume their beverages, and sometimes toss the used paper cups + plastic straws + plastic cup lids on the ground). Typically only dine in/sit down restaurants provide reusable metal straws, but dine in restaurant customers are not the ones that litter with plastic straws, since it is normal for customers of such places to simply leave their cups/plates/straws on the table when they leave (and a restaurant employee cleans things up and discards any plastic straws properly in a trash can, and thus harmlessly into a landfill, when plastic straws are used). In other words, metal straws do not actually address the root cause of environmental problems associated with plastic straws. The root cause is human litter bugs. Solving the problem of human litter bugs requires societal and legal system changes, not changes to straws made available at dine in restaurants. If the government hypothetically changed the laws to legally allow (and encourage) people to carry around bug spray (or regular pepper spray), and to then spray litter bugs with the spray upon observing someone littering, the problem of plastic straw contamination of the environment might actually go away. Such would be an incomplete solution however, as such small interactions would be unlikely to change the fundamental personality of the litter bugs to get them to truly stop, and some of them might even go so far as to take out guns and shoot the people spraying them, even when they were genuinely guilty of littering. Consequently, resolving the problem is somewhat more complex, as it somehow requires altering litter bugs' personalities. Forcing metal straws on people is not however the solution to environmental problems, nor will it cause a personality shift amongst litter bugs. The metal straw phenomena needs to stop. Real solutions are needed, and metal straws are not it.

@@tommyblade8093 Ok so tbh I can't explain of it all so I suggest you look it up if you want more but ill do my best to explain. Metal straws are more resource and energy-intensive to make than plastic straws. metal straws also are not as recyclable as plastic ones. The main problem people had with plastic straws is that they wound up in the ocean which only happened in California (or at least mainly). The solution might be to have more ways to get the straws to recycling places instead of the trash. also thank you for your politeness, I don't see many people that have that kind of respect.
@RRKS4 жыл бұрын
@@firefox-op1ok It feels as if metal straws would be more recyclable as you can just smelt them down again (some plastics doesn't work as well with being smelted a second time), and that they'd probably be better taken care of (Plastic is trash, metal is reusable is a common thought). In any case.. Here in Sweden restaurants has started using paper straws alot. Probably some kind of chemical to make it a bit water resistant, however i'm guessing it's still good enough for the weather to decompose if it happens to go into the sea or something.

I heard a story from a time when I was in boy scouts. Apparently some kid that the leader knew died when he fell and a lollypop broke through his hard palate. The "moral" of that story she shared was not "don't eat lollypops", it was to not do activities like running when you have potentially dangerous things in your mouth.

Actually when I was a kid we went at a fast food with my mother, for a reason known only to my child brain at that time, I thought it would be funny to stick 2 straws in my nostrils. Then I proceeded to shake my head up and down, not minding the fact that there was a table right underneath. I turned into a bloody straw fountain for a few minutes. This was the first and last time I've ever put straws up my nose. These things are dangerously sharp trust me 😬
