I work at an animal shelter and have seen multiple traumatic leg injuries. Sometimes we are able to save the leg, sometimes not. I honestly think that for active dogs, an amputation is kinder and ends up with the dog being happier. The recovery is much shorter and they tend to have no pain once it’s healed. For the ones that keep the leg, especially the athletes, the recovery is brutal, both mentally and physically They generally end up with a permanent limp, pain meds and activity restrictions. Dogs really come with three legs and a spare. They don’t have an emotional connection to their limbs the way that people do. They don’t fear being handicapped, but being in permanent pain is a true burden to them. You made the right decision. Planning fun and rewarding things for him to do in the future shows that you have a big heart and that you truly love him. All the best.

It was a freak accident. They happen. I had something similar happen with one of my horses (we had to euthanize the horse-spiral fracture). It sucks that it happened to such a keen boy. I’m so sorry. It’s great that he will continue to have a great life with you, not every owner would keep a dog who no longer serves “a purpose.” Wishing you both the best, and I truly look forward to seeing where you take him next, and how things evolve.

I have a German Shepherd male who i treat him like glass! He so careless with himself! my dog had been neutered at 1 yr and I had him checked nothing good hips but I notice that gate change and. He had a limp every now, and then he would push too hard! He had a scar inside his leg, which meant that he must have torn his muscle, and he was checked out, and they were making me feel like I was crazy! Im beating myself up and down to the point, blaming myself ! I'm so sorry that I neutered him for the fact that I didn't know that he shouldn't have been before he turned 2yrs and they are saying that they are getting significantly more injuries even at full growth and I will never do it again with another dog! My GSD is also physically limited so there is a lot I wanted to do with him that I cannot. But we do what he can do like Mantrailing, Nosework which we recently discovered and a few other things that are not taxing on his body and he loves it. I got my GSD from a rescue group in TN that pulled him from shelter in SC and had a 9” rod in place of his femur bone. Ha had been surrendered with a fresh gun shot wound to his rear leg. I took him in to rehab him and thought i would have had it amputated but now after having him for 5 years now and watching him running im glad the rescue had the surgery to save that leg. This was Jan 9 2020 and still shows no sign of a limp! He is a big boy at 90 pounds. I realize he should be very thin because of that injury and i must cut back his treats! It is all a personal choice i guess

Hi Larry, I just saw this yesterday when surfing KZbin. I am deeply sorry for your loss and heartache. Dante sounds like a super dog and he will eventually heal and move on. This came to mind several hours after seeing your message and this is just some food for thought...down the road, there may be the possibility that he could be a service dog who visits the nursing homes, veterans homes, children's hospitals, etc. Since he is such an outgoing dog, this may be something to consider, as it would not be very labor intensive on his part but would certainly provide the companionship and interaction that he so loves. Thinking of you and your family in the days ahead. God Bless! Sincerely, Donna Christensen

She has always been crazy going after her ball, jumping etc to the point that no one is allowed to throw anything for her to chase/catch. She dislocated her hip a year ago and we learned that she had mild bilateral congenital hip dysplasia. She comes from a long line of working dogs with impeccable breeding, but sometimes things just happen. What you said about Dante responding to your grief…my girl does the same thing. They are our angels! Looking forward to seeing Dante in the future and best wishes for a speedy recovery!

A rescue was pulling an injured dog from the shelter. They told me to where to go pick him up. When I got there I realized this was an old injury, likely hit by a car. The leg was broken and bone was showing and that poor baby had the foot bent back and was putting weight on that nub. I cannot imagine the pain he had experienced. I told the rescue there was no repairing that and they scheduled a leg amputation. I felt I was in no way qualified to do after care for that kind of surgery and asked if they had a nurse in our group. They assured me they had faith in my ability from the work I did with other fosters. So I dropped him off and picked him up the next day. I was amazed at how neat the wound was. The next 2 days he looked depressed and I started to worry. The third day he perked up so it must have been residual pain medication. The problem quickly became how to keep him resting. He was supposed to be kept still except for bathroom trips. After 2 days of that he was bopping around on the leash like he felt GOOD. I went to let my dogs out for potties and he squeezed past me without his leash and he went running. I was TERRIFIED. But when I got him inside everything looked good. I wouldn’t recommend running a week after surgery when the stitches haven’t even come out yet, but dogs have a will of their own sometimes. Be prepared for that with you having a high drive dog.

He rushed to the ball and fell trying to catch it on the ground. I changed that after some thinking and planning :) I used a bigger ball where he could run after it but did not have to go down to grab it. That way he was not putting his body weight on his front legs, he is 97 lbs. Worked for me….
