How did Finnick's original reaping happen?

Hi friends! This week we take a look at how Finnick's original reaping happened for the 65th Hunger Games!
Finnick is from District 4, which is a career district. It's known that these districts have tributes who train until they are 18 years old, at which point they volunteer. However, Finnick was 14 when he won his Games, which begs the question, how did his reaping occur?

Now I definitely have to buy and read that book! I've been watching your videos for just a few days, and I keep finding more and more content on the Hunger Games, which I absolutely loved reading when I was about 13 (I read all three of them before the first film was released in DVD, having had a previous experience with the adaptation of Percy Jackson). My memory makes it almost impossible for me to forget a plot, so I usually don't find the need to re-read or re-watch something. There are a few exceptions when I just decided to re-read a book because it made a strong impression, or re-watch a series because the second season will be released soon (like the Umbrella Academy for example). I've been rewatching the films these past few days and don't find them as bad as people say, or as I found them back then (mostly due to popular opinion, I think), although the books are still way better due to the amount of details in them. I found the second film too short despite it being the longest (not enough time spend in the arena in my opinion, plus the idea of the arena being laid out as a clock was amazing and I was looking forward to seeing more being done with it). Anyway, your videos explain a lot of details, or at least theorize about them, and are very interesting to watch. Because of my studies, and because of a few other youtubers, I've been analysing, though involuntarily for the most part, plot details of films I watch and books I read, so I always find it interesting to listen to someone else analyse details some may have missed, or unexplained plot points, and try to answer questions left by the end of a book or a film.

Yes, there were only four victors, the first victor who is long dead by the first book, Haymitch, Katniss, and Peeta. This will make more sense if you have read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, just didn't want to give any spoilers.

I read somewhere that even in Career districts people don't always volunteer, the volunteer percentage from D4 being rather lower than in 1 and 2. My belief is that he was reaped because Careers normally volunteer when they're 18, so I don't know why he'd risk it so much younger.

Im wondering how 4 became a career district. I mean fishing isnt exactly the same as luxury. Food is food. Why isnt the livestock district career. Also none of the 4s mags, finnick or even annie have true career personalities. And Annie especially going crazy after her games. Perhaps most in 4 dont train as much for fame as they do for the hope of survival.

Yeah I think they might train just in case if they are reaped, they would be prepared and not because they want to be part of the games. I think Katniss's father knew that. That's why people from District 12 and Peetas mom knew that Katniss may have a chance to win. Because in a way Katniss has been preparing even without her knowing. Prim couldn't harm an Animal put Katniss was able too for survival and to be feed. You can't stop the Hunger Games put you can prepare your kids for it.

Katniss should have been killed by thresh. Thresh only spared her life because of what she did for rue. But how did thresh know what happened then? It makes no sense. So Katniss should be dead and the rebellion failed, Cato wins the hunger games, and yeah.

I think Mags probably deserves some credit for however Finnick changes after his hunger games. Haymitch said she was Finnick's mentor and practically raised him. And he described Mags as a wonderful lady. They made it clear Finnick cared for Mags deeply. That relationship must have impacted him.

I think Annie won her games by surviving a flood and Johanna purposely got a low training score and made herself seem weak then at the final few she released her strength and axed the other people to death. (I don't remember, that's what I think happened)

honestly i love the idea of another hunger games book exploring how a cocky career tribute who volunteered at 14 who then learns and changes into a more sombre and world-weary character due to their experience in the games (and in Finnick's case, after as well). It'd be a totally different type of character and arc than Katniss' story and honestly sounds more interesting than the young-Snow story.

I don't know if he would have volunteered, but I like to believe that District 4 trains their tributes more for survival's sake rather than for pride and victory. And that only select people who think they will win will actually volunteer (like Finnick or the girl who hands Katniss flowers on their victory tour to D4.). In the first movie, the tributes from D4. look like they're somewhere between 12 - 16 , so I feel like any volunteers, 18 or not, are still rarer there than D1. and D2. I also heard, though I'm not sure if it's true, that Suzanne Collins said in an interview that the first three victors from D4. were females who won 20 years apart: Mags:11th, unknown 31st, unknown 51st, then of course we know of Finnick and Annie 65th and 70th. maybe there was more in between 51st and 65th, but I feel like a volunteer career district would also produce more than five victors within 75 years. Sorry for the long comment, I love thinking about this stuff and idk why x)

I feel like district 4 is very different in the way they volunteer. Because in the 74th games the boy from district 4 is a little boy that gets killed by Cato in the bloodbath. In Katniss’ first games the district four boy was really young, too. But he was more shy from what we saw. The careers didn’t even include him in their group, and only in the books was the district 4 girl in the careers. This leads me to think district 4 doesn’t always have volunteers

I’m assuming the academy’s plan who is going to volunteer every year strategically. It makes more sense to only send your number 1 best tribute instead of top two because there is only 1 victor so it’d be a waste of strength for next year to send two possible winners knowing only 1 will come home. So maybe finnicks district partner that year was an 18 year old female tribute who was their districts choice to volunteer that year thus nobody needed to volunteer for the males. Which makes more sense because finnick isn’t the type to volunteer and also it’s highly unlikely for a 14 year old to volunteer after so little years training.

I don’t thank district four volunteers but I do believe they are very skilled because of them being a fishing district therefore they are able to use spears, tridents, knives etc. and since they know how to swim they are a little bit more physically fit and that is why they match up with district 1and district 2

I agree that he probably volunteered however I wonder how the those who had trained to the age of 18 and the trainers would have felt about him doing this when he came back and he deprived someone of the chance of winning. Also what happens if more than one person volunteers?

I believe that because Finnick won, no one saw him as depriving or wasting that tribute spot. Had he volunteered and died, then it could have been seen as a waste

Almost every comment in this comment section and this video supports my theory of why district 4 semi-career district. Yes, some district 4 kids train like 1and 2, but some are only really included into the pack cuz they're strong from hard physical labor like Thresh and resourceful like our dear Finnick cuz the fishing industry demands the physical strength of being a fishmonger and resourcefulness to be able to supply aquatic cuisine for the country. Yes, winning the games is seen as a great honor in district 4, but not the same degree as in 1 and 2. Most district 4 kids only train just to be well prepared to win if they get reaped like Finnick . Not being brainwashed to think the hunger games are a competition of pride and honor like Cato did. And that's supported on how Annie won her games cuz she was the best swimmer, and Mags was very resourceful since she could "make a fishhook out of almost anything". Yes , district 4 careers are strong, but their actually the weakest of them. Just look how the tributes of 4 performed in the 74th hunger games. They performed worse than districts 3,5,10,11, and 12 cuz each of those districts had at least one tribute that outperformed the district 4 female that year. Pretty pitiful by career district standards. Yes, district 4 has one of the largest pools of victors in their history of hunger games as mentioned in Catching Fire, but theirs , while larger than the strongest non-career districts like 5 or 7, is smaller kinda not good compared to 1 and 2. I'd say in the first 73 years, district 1 had 11 victors, district 2 with 12, and district 4 just 8. All these theories are why districts 1 and 2 would be like "hey district 4. Yeah we know you're a career district like us, but sometimes you guys are pathetic by career tribute standards. So from now on, you're only gonna be our partners in crime if you guys are good"

I’ve always viewed D-4 as the example the author used to show how a career district has evolved into becoming more rebellious against the Capitol. Basically to throw in hints that the Capitol is so corrupt that even a career district, that sided with the Capitol during the Dark Days, can change their minds and sometimes it’s a slow burn. So yah, D-4 was most likely had become more of a semi-career district. My theory for this would be that, at some point Panem history, families in D-4 became more aware at how wrong the Games were and that the Capitol was heavily corrupted. It started off small with only a few families and citizens, but the numbers grew through word-of-mouth and discovering personal experiences. Due to the increasing number of citizens no longer in support of the Capitol (but likely appearing that they are), the less children were sent in to train as career tributes. Due to the decrease of career students for training, the number of inexperienced kids being reaped increased and the rate of volunteers lowered as well. Did the Capitol realize this? Most likely. But they either didn’t care because they had the strength of two devoted districts (1 and 2), and the other districts feared them too much. It’s also likely that the wealthier and more powerful members of D-4 were still in support of them. So when someone like Finnick wins the Games, he’s praised all over Panem to keep up appearances that D-4 is 100% a career district and that they just reaped a few “bad apples”. This would cause the other districts to not really think twice about where the citizens of D-4 actually align themselves with. Which is likely why Katniss was so reluctant to trust Finnick during the third quarter quell.

HC Iapetus I see it the other way. I don’t think D4 would have supported the Capitol in the Dark Days because it seems odd that D4 would an D3 wouldn’t. I think that D4 might have had more victors early on in the history of the games because they were able to hunt (for fish) (this is supported by a line in Chapter 1 of the Ballard of Songbirds and Snakes) whereas D1 and D2 would be less self sufficient and wouldn’t have started training for the HG until after the first couple. This means that D4 would have started to get richer by having a few victors in quick succession. Then it is likely that pretended to support the Capitol or atleast were indifferent to it. It is possible that D4 became a Navy base for the Capitol and that some of their people started working for the Capitol’s armed forces. So as time went on I imagine they learned to co-exist with the Capitol and therefore aren’t treated as proper careers by D1 and D2 because they don’t believe that D4 is in support of the Capitol even if the rest of Panem do. However you do make a good argument.

And a navy base comes jobs, which equals to money, which equals to buying power for food, which equals to happier citizens. Just like the nut in district 2.

Mags was probably reaped as she was in an early Games. However Annie likely volunteered as by then 4 was a Career district

My theory about this is that we know it was Mags who possibly started the Careers training program. We know of her character so it’s most likely the Career program was used mainly to reduce casualties?

I always thought that in the carreer district like 4 there would be lots of people volunteering so I thought there were others that were volunteering with finnick but he either got to it first or had a blood relation for they never said how it was dealt out in the reapings like that. Can you do a video on if President alma coin had be come president before the 75 hunger games. For think about it how many victors would there be how many would say yes and why would the outcome be would it be a bit different or completely the same. Great video I just subscribed. Could you do a theory/speculation video on how Coin managed to contact Haymitch, Finnick, and the other tributes to be in on the "Save the Mockingjay" plan? Haymitch is obviously a mentor and could probably get in contact with Plutarch, but how would tributes get in contact with Coin/13/Plutarch independently? Especially since the plan was risky enough that, according to Haymitch, it was better to leave both Katniss and Peeta in the dark about it. I find it interesting how in your bloodbath video you mentioned how the career pack wouldn’t kill each other. But in the movie of the 74th hunger games Cato (district 2) slit the throat of the district 4 male with his sword. But then again he was 12 and Cato probably thought that he wouldn’t be much help for the career pack. But for some reason I feel like if that hadn’t happened and the boy survived the blood bath he would have made an ally with one of the main characters. Maybe even Foxface or Thresh, for they were alone for the entire games from the information given to the viewers.

I deffinitely can see him volunteering before he was officialy allowed to by the academy bcs he was arogant and thought that he was ready so there is no point in waiting until he is 18. And his own distirct must love him bcs he won and his plan worked but if he died his people would hate him for foolishly taking away chance of glory from someone older and more capable. As for Clove, it is possible that Finnick actualy made volunteering before 18 more popular bcs it worked out well for him, so after that more younger tributes were volunteering.

My opinion is that he was originally training for the hunger games but got reaped at 14 and didn’t expect to go in as early as he did honestly I think district 4 trains for the games more for survival rather than honor like district 1 and 2

I know that it's mentioned that District 4 is the poorest of the Career Districts. And also mentioned that they aren't always teamed up with the Careers. So I don't think they would have had an Academy since they were more focused with fishing. And that is an extremely dangerous career. In their school, I figured that they would teach them as regular classes how to do things like fishing, making/repairing nets, important knots, and things that you need to know for working on a boat for extended periods of time. And those skills can be transferred to survival and hunting for the Hunger Games. I can see two ways for Finek to be a participant for his game. Either he volunteered because he was being cocky and believed that he could win and escape the life of a fisherman or his name was called out and nobody volunteered for his place.

My understanding of the academies is 1 and 2 are graduating and volunteering. Its more likely that people who train in other districts are wealthy who train their children to increase survival

Even though district 4 was a career district it was not favourited by the capitol because unlike districts like district 1 the produce does not make them splendidly happy for example district 2 gave them peace keepers which allowed them to keep the districts under control which allowed them to live how they did where district 4 only provided some food which they already had a abundance of.

The way I always see it is that for is the honorary career district it is not like one and two and where the people from four don’t actually volunteer they don’t train and a special Academy they just do the work of a fishing person that is why they are very good at using tridents or even a spear they would be good with knives nets they be able to fashion lots of traps and that is why they are viewed valuable because even in the book they killed the district four tribute so they aren’t always in the career pack

I think volounteering relatively young is a common practice in the career districs, perhaps only rarely as young as 14, but the earlier you start volounteering the more years you have the chance to become a tribute and thus more likely to get the chamce to bring honor to your district.
