I think the most part of the people who hates AHIG, is just because slipknot said that is their less favorite album of all. I agree is an amazing album, not their best because that is more a subjective opinion but is not their worst i think. I speak spanish, so please forgive any grammar mistake :)

It was seen as their "worst" album due to songs such as "Sulfur" "Dead Memories" and more importantly "Psychosocial". Alot of self-important elitist fans didnt consider it to be Slipknot and alot of fans put all of the blame on Corey for bringing in Stone Sour-style lyrics with clean vocals... Alot of them missed the fact that that style has been there since Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat. Only now Corey were more comfortable in doing it. AHIG is a great album through and through. Its not IOWA-good, but who gives a shit... its SlipKnot!

Chemistry nerd here. As regards the chemical properties of sulfur- pure sulfur isn't really dangerous or harmful, but it does smell awful, like rotten eggs. Sulfur is pretty well-known by that smell, if nothing else, as it's released from volcanic activity or when certain things, including matches and most fossil fuels, are burned. Brimstone, as in 'fire and brimstone,' is an old name for sulfur. With the line "There's something inside of me that feels like breathing in sulfur," Corey is probably referring to that awful smell; he's disgusted by his own thoughts, and has this instinctive urge to distance himself from them, much like anyone would react to being made to breathe in sulfur fumes. (Or he could have been referring to hydrogen sulfide which is a gas that, on top of smelling even worse than elemental sulfur (at least before it deadens your sense of smell because of its pure toxicity) is just as deadly as carbon monoxide and breathing it in any noticeable concentration will kill you dead in no time flat. But it's probably the disgust thing) More chemistry stuff, if you're interested: When sulfur gets really dangerous is when it's burned and forms sulfur dioxide, itself harmful to inhale, but which then can combine with water in the air to form sulfuric acid, which is the main component that causes acid rain to be so dangerous, and in concentrated forms can cause pretty severe chemical burns on contact, among other awful stuff. There are other sulfur-based compounds that are dangerous as well, of course, but, as a general rule, in most of its forms, sulfur is more aggravating than outright harmful, as it has that powerful, pungent, and unpleasant smell across many compounds that involve it. However, it's actually present in some compounds that are necessary for life to function- it's a component of two of the B vitamins, for example! It's like how pure sodium is a soft metal that ignites and explodes on the slightest contact with water, and pure chlorine is a poisonous gas that creates powerful acid on contact with your body, but combine them together and you get tasty, inert table salt. Chemistry is awesome.
@murphmuffin90694 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this explanation, I was just going to be a smart ass and say "the chemical compound of Sulfur is Sulfur..." Lol But about the lyrics, it could also mean that breathing in sulfur is like going to the place of fire and brimstone --> Hell Which could also be a reference to suicide, but I think it's a little bit of a reach to go that way when Hydrogen Sulfide will do the trick.
@Fatmaax4 жыл бұрын
James Murphy that's a cool theory that could be the case indeed because if there's anything i learned from watching shows like supernatural it's that anything and any creature from hell is associated with (the smell of) sulfur
@patbateman81164 жыл бұрын
Kihanacloudy Have you watched Breaking Bad? It’s the best show on tv in my opinion and is linked a lot to chemistry. I agree chemistry is awesome! Science is awesome! Or he could be talking about a desire to eat booty. Because that's pretty much like breathing in sulfur.

I'm a chemical operator by trade, so I know a little bit. One that i find interesting is hydrogen peroxide, only one atom different from water which is essential for life, but in it's concentrated form will burn almost any organic material.

Corey has got to be one of the best vocalists of all time, he has immaculate control of his voice, from clean, melodic singing to brutal growls. But if you're into lyrical content, Tool has that covered, and it's all open to interpretation.
