7:28 I like this depiction of Datu Lapulapu. He looks like a proper datu. Too often he's depicted as a bare chested young man with barely a hint of regalia that would show that he was man with power. The two most important things are his age and armour. Even in modern times, datus are either old or middle-age because you usually inherit the title from a parent... and there's no way that a datu would go to battle without wearing as much armour as the weather would allow.

Our native wooden shield called Kalasag is not just a simple plank-made shield of other states, kingdoms and empires during those times. Our shield was made from hardwood, still meticulously chosen among many cutted hardwoods, then there will be rituals conducted etc. The hardwood chosen will then be carved into a shield, not planks joined together of other states back then, it was a single purpose built shield. It was then reinforced with rattan lashings and lastly coated with resin that will further strengthen it. Kalasag should be one of the things back then during the precolonial times that we should be proud of too.

As a Pinoy and fellow Capampangan, I really appreciate your videos. It is refreshing to get a erudite Filipino perspective on our country's history. There really needs to be a counterbalance to the ubiquitous propaganda and disinformation spread by western media, authors and historians about the Philippines. Please keep up the great work. I have always wondered if Magellan underestimated the Filipino weaponry and fighting skills due to their great success in previous battles against the Inca and Aztec empires in Latin America. I had read once that, the Spaniards estimated, thanks to superior weaponry, that 1 Spanish soldier could take on as many as 50 indigenous warriors in Latin America. Natives such as the Incas only had blunt and stone weapons to fight against the Spanish soldiers equipped with firearms, armor and canons. And before the Spaniards arrived, they only fought each other. The mighty Aztecs primarily hunted other tribes to acquire slaves to sell or for religious sacrifices. In contrast, already having been introduced to the Damascus steel pattern welding process, Filipino bladesmiths forged the the fearsome Kris and Kampilan that would strike down Magellan and his crew (as witnessed by Pigafetta). The Filipino warriors had already developed advanced fighting systems over years of repelling myriads of foreign invaders even before the Spaniards arrived. So if Magellan relied on such an estimate then It makes sense that he would have been very confident in engaging up to 2,500 indigenous warriors with only 50 spanish soldiers. So based on this calculation, I would argue that the Spaniards actually were the ones that had the overwhelming numbers. Theoretically Magellan had two and a half times the number to defeat LapuLapu. So it makes the argument that the Filipinos won due to their superior military strategy even stronger. It would be great to hear your comments from a historical point of view on this. As a native of Lapulapu city, i probably think they used wood from "Lawaan" a type of a very lightweight tree, yet very strong or "guod" as our natives say. These types of wood are used in boatmaking, which is very perfect for sailing. As they are light and strong, i think they used this for shields

The wooden shields of the Pre-Colonial Visayans of the time, they called it kalasag. According to William Henry Scott's "Barangay: Sixteenth Century Philippine Society and Culture", they were made of: "...a light, corky wood which was very fibrous so as to enmesh any spear or dagger which penetrated it, and it was generally considered swordproof." Scott also added that, "It was strengthened and decorated with rattan binding coated with a resinous pitch, and of sufficient size to give full body protection-about 50 to 150 cm." So these shields, if they were able to at least stop Spanish crossbow bolts and at times, even arcabuz (arquebus) rounds, were of strong build. Since the wood is not only fibrous, it even had a layer of rattan binding, which is used for furniture today and it's sturdy, along with resins from trees.

Thank you kabayan for this wonderful video. I just want to present this tradition among the Cebuanos which I heard when I stayed at Mandaue for summer classes. Some Cebuanos say that Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan by smashing the latter's head with a pestle which Cebuanos call "alho." In fact, Datu Lapu-Lapu was also known, according to that tradition, as "Bali-Alho" which means "pestle-breaker" because they say Lapu-Lapu can break a pestle, which is made of hardwood, with bare hands. I don't know if this tradition is true but it might worth investigating. Another thing that I want to raise is about the case of Marrano Jews who fled to the Philippines during the Spanish era. I heard some Filipinos claiming to be descendants of the Marranos. Can you please make a video of this, whether this story is true or not?

The Wooden Shields were most likely a Bruneian Technology that was widespread in the Visayas and Mindanao due to the Majapahit and its early gunpowder technology always clashing with the Sultanate of Brunei and Sulu, which ended up in victories for both Brunei and Sulu with the spread of much more gunpowder resistant armor and a more widespread way of fighting with or against gunpowder technology.

I have doubt that the early Visayans never used firepower against Magellan and the Europeans before because arquebusses and our version of canon known as lantakas were already in use throughout the islands. If projectile weapons didn't exist back then, we wouldn't have the native word for gun - 'baril' (Tagalog) or 'pusil' (Visayan) which is actually Tamil in origin. Sometimes the origin of the word tells us some very interesting stories about our culture that is often ignored in our history books

I highly doubt that there was a 1500 warriors back then. Magellan is not stupid enough to fight a highly disadvantageous battle. I think the Spaniards just fluffed up the numbers so their defeat won't sound so pathetic. the fight won't last an hour if there's a 1500 warriors against 50 Spaniards.

Kirby, what do you think about the many attempts in changing the country’s colonial name? There have been many attempts to change the colonial name (from Bonifacio’s Katagalugan to President Duterte reviving the proposal of ex-President Marcos Sr. “Maharlika” that’s Sanskrit though-there’s an Asian Boss video about the topic) but none of them succeeded why is that? What are your initial thoughts about it? Why keep the colonial name that only represents a bygone era and makes a group of people look like they were and still are enslaved? Based on my experiences on the internet with those who have been interested in the Colonial phase, their colonial mentality makes me sad 😞 😞 😢 😢 and enraged 😠 😡 and this is all the more reason as to why this sovereign nation-state has to change it’s colonial name to something more dignified inspiring and has to be one that reflects the whole history of the peoples of the would be Philippine archipelago 🇵🇭 like “Lusbiminda” (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao) If other countries can change their colonial name like Ceylon to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 why can’t we do the same when we should as a sovereign nation-state where we can make our own choices and decisions?

Because we don't have precolonial unified name, The name Philippines is not bad, making the name Philippines marks or associated as for colonial mentality that makes it bad or not making sense, why connect the name of the country to those who were long gone and see it a reason for colonial mentality?. The Spaniards and Americans were no longer holding us and their poeple today's not the same poeple as before, learn how to move on and just learn the leassons of the past whether it's bad or good.

Lol, changing the name won't solve anything and as if that's the main problem, if people are interested to the colonial period of the history that's what you called preference, they preferred the story behind that timeline and you have nothing to do with that and it doesn't mean if they want to know about that timeline of our history it make them less or having colonial mentality because it's still about our country and if you want the prehispanic to be INTERESTING TO THOSE PEOPLE you better make things, do things that can raise the popularity of the prehispanic roots than complaining, being patriotic has nothing to do with changing the name, it's how you educate them and don't be just a one sided about the history both precolonial and Hispanic period were both worth to enjoy. No need to change the name of the PHILIPPINE to something else, beside WE DON'T HAVE A UNIFIED NAME BEFORE THAT and that the reason we're conquered because we're not unified and a country to begin with.

First of all, I want to say that Kirby Araullo is an author and an author makes his living by selling his books. Yes, he is educated but that is about all. Common sense will tell you not to believe everything you are told and only half of what you see. Kirby is a Muslim so he tends to glorify the Muslims and especially the history of the Muslims as seen thru his eyes and those of many other present day Muslims. With that said, there is no authentic documented history of the Philippines prior to Magellan's landing. Consider the source when you hear or read about Philippine history. Yes, there are historians but like Kirby, this is how they earn their living. Magellan went to the islands to "colonize" them for King Philip of Spain. He went in peace and not for battle. He arrived in 3 ships but 2 f them were anchored in another part of the island. He went to Mactlan in one ship and the crew. He and a few of his crew left the ship and continued in small boats because the water was too shallow for his ship. Lapu Lapu, a Muslim heard of his planned arrival and gathered over a thousand natives to attack and massacre Magellan and his crew, which they did. Is this a heroic act? I don't think so. Documented history tells us that this was the beginning of the end for Muslim control of the Philippines. History also tells us that Spanish culture was introduced in the Philippines and even to this day it remains. History also tells us that these were prosperous times for the Philippines. Would the Muslims have been able to defend the Philippines against the Japanese? Many Muslims have adapted to life in the Philippnes under the present system. Christians, Muslims, Hindu, Buddhists and others all live peacefully now. Well, not exactly, there are still NPA, and Muslim bandits that still have not adapted.
