Drying the potatoes are really worth while too. You can also make a flour from the potatoes for bread. and make a dried meal for the chickens to include flax oil (flax easy to grow)

My daughter started feeding her pup raw carrots to chew on he loved carrots. She also fed him some fruits. What a wonderful thing to have a root cellar. I would love to have one. I think that some people are going to go back to the old ways, it is understandable because we don’t know what we’re eating anymore when it’s bought. The prices are insane, outrageous prices. I make everything from scratch. Love your videos, your way of life, living your life. That’s what happiness is, being able to make choices, to choose how you want to live your life. We have a huge pasture area and have successfully raised chickens with no grain. They were leaner, but we had plenty of eggs and very low amount of bugs in the yard. We did use regular starter grower when we were brooding them though. I was just thinking that in nature, the birds don't get a big pile of grain handed to them every day, so I tried it and it worked. We do have 5 acres of pasture, though and I just let the chickens wander wherever they wanted. We had a good guard dog, so no trouble with them getting picked off. They always stayed relatively (an acre or two) close to the house anyway.

Hi Shawn, I just want to start by saying I’ve been following you for a long time now and you’ve been a big influence in how I currently live my life. I’m over in Manitoba and started a regenerative farm three years ago. One of my offering are eggs and meat birds that are pasture raised, moved daily to new pasture and we feed homemade milled feed. No corn or say because the price so we substitute with flax and hemp to get the right protein. Have the usual wheat, peas, oats and barley. You can find those organically a lot easier than corn or soy. You can also get the screenings at a lower cost. I’m excited to see more, keep up the great life!

When we had a house, we had a cold cellar which my then husband refused to "finish" the cellar (some people lay ceramic tile on floor) because he said it would make a difference to the temperature. As he also made wine (without any additives at all) I believe it caused some of our potatoes to get mouldy. We would pick and then store them over the winter. It was a problem though. So happy to hear they all did well.

Dr Mercola posted an article a few days ago about storing potatoes. Says potatoes should be stored between 50F and 60F. If stored below 50F he says "When potatoes are chilled, an enzyme breaks down the sucrose (aka sugar) they contain and turns it into fructose and glucose, which combines with the amino acid asparagine to form acrylamide, a carcinogenic substance, when heated"

Grow the purple potatoes that special Japanese people in the island do, they are very old and healthy with this diet along with sour cucumbers and fish. Or the old Andes Indians purple potato. Totally different than ordinary high starch potato. Or just boil it, cool it and make a vinaigrette dressing to mix it with. That changes the chemical structure in a positive way. Berries ok but other fruit has usually too much suger…

Consider fermenting the potatoes. 2% salt brine for total weight (including water) with a tablespoon of vinegar (with the live mother) per liter of water. Cut them into French fries or cubes. Keep submerged. Rinse them well after 7 to 14 days. It has a strong smell, but don't let it put you off. Pre cook and freeze. It makes it healthy, and the fermentation lowers the carb content dramatically. Use as normal in baking or frying. It tastes fantastic! Try it. Do some research on fermenting beans, grains, and other high carb and high lectin foods, even nuts. God bless.

White potatoes are pure starch. Starch is instantly converted into sugar after you eat it. Carnivore and keto are not only unsutainable long-term, but they're a rich mans diet. Same thing with going totally organic. 98% of the world could never afford your diet, let alone survive without - regrettably - industrial agriculture/factory farms. As for discounting potatoes, North and South American indigenous peoples have survived on them, along with corn/maize for at least a thousand years. Ancient Egyptians had bread and beer. Asians, rice for a couple of millennia. The Irish - potatoes, whiskey and beer... in that order lol. We do live in a world of insects and pests, vermin, blight, fungus and other 'plagues/pestilence that ruin crops. Now you Shawn are at least a 'fun guy'. Still, no matter how well we eat/drink, exercise, think positively, live naturally, we still get sick and eventually, we all die. At 72, I've come to terms with my own and my fiancées mortality - I've suffered from extensive, painful arthritis half of my life, and the missus is a cancer survivor - almost five years. Yet, regardless of our infirmities, we bought a treed one and a quarter acre 'homestead' in a rural village in Quebec, left urban Brampton, and we are flourishing... albeit with some additional pain lol. Got me a new gas powered chainsaw yesterday to cut some serious logs - we had five trees felled last fall. Built an additional three raised garden boxes to our eleven. Got an Aussie Shepherd last fall thats helping to keep us young... and sore lol. So life is good. Everything in moderation my friend.

Chinese monks practiced grain liberation as a lifestyle, none of this diet stuff is actually new, besides the made up fake ones. they valued the benefits long before most of the expensive meals we have today existed. If you want to argue that eggs are a rich man’s food, well I dont know what to say, because even a kid can learn to look after chickens and avoid the highly priced cartons with so many labels, letters, and acronyms, that are being praised to the high heavens, because rich men arent buying them. The rich men dont need to be told what to eat or how to eat it. Its the poor that are now given the chance to access these rich foods at every corner store. To pretend that it would be foolish to take advantage of this, just because I can technically live off bread and water… well let me put it this way. 50 years ago, was it harder or easier for the average person to access the rich man foods. Fast food is the rich man’s diet, because our healthcare system is counting on us to enjoy it so that we can make them rich when we lose touch with our bodies and start popping pills to compensate. It's not a rich man's game to decide that your health is worth more than just survival. Starch and carbs are the most overinflated, costly foods in the world if you really put some thought into consideration. Plenty accessible, enjoyable, affordable foods dont spike our blood sugar like 98% of commercially popular drinks and snacks do. Its just popular to make it seem like we are somehow victims out here, when we are meanwhile living in the most bountiful era in terms of food availability, ever. Companies are getting rich from using fancy words, ads, and distractions to hawk some utterly laughable products these days. Sure, if we follow their narrative, eating healthy will cost us an arm and a leg, if we are responsible about it. Diets with limited carbs are hard, because they represent natural ways that we acquire food without processing it and adding corn syrup, starch, and everything else designed to distract us from the fact that we are eating a carrot that is sweet, but our bodies can do great without them. What other macronutrient can be trimmed down like that and have such drastic effects? Personally, when my diet is not rich enough in healthy fats… I feel sick. But carbs are addictive and sugar is basically free, because it keeps you coming back for more later rather than nourishing us properly.

Do you wish you made the cellar bigger? I wish they built these standard in homes. I could use this for my garden goods.

And maybe as a result of our times becoming more dire, maybe a grid down situation, or shtf situation, builders will see the need.

I certainly would design it in on a new build. I have many cool ideas just not as much money as ideas. LOL.
