It begs the question, why trust anyone else to be secret keeper at all? Why not have James be the secret keeper? We know at Shell Cottage Bill Weasley, the owner of the cottage who actually lives there at the same time is secret keeper for the house. Why didn't James and Lily do that? Why didn't Dumbledore recommend it? It was a time filled with so much distrust, why not be your own secret keeper? You aren't likely to betray yourself.

Because plot & become who is going to bring them groceries to survive? With shell cottage they aren’t in danger, they can get the supplies they need. But when James and Lilly were hiding Harry they couldn’t go out or they would risk dying. So they ended a secret keeper to bring them all the stuff they needed. Or that’s my guess atleast.

If I were to be adding to the canon of HP, I would say that it just had not been attempted before. There are a number of good reasons for this: 1) The Secrecy spell is not one that has many uses unless you are hiding from another magic user. Hiding from muggles is much more easily accomplished through much simpler spells. This means that the spell would not have been used and practiced as widely as, say "Repel Muggles" (Repellum Muggletom, iirc) 2)Making a third party a secret keeper means that eliminating one of the hiding people doesn't end the spell completely and prematurely. 3) As far as we know, the spell is permanent upon a place or object, meaning that it is hard to really practice and test the spell limits on something the size of a respectable home. 4) The spell is not common knowledge, as we do not see every single magic user using the spell, even before the Potters were killed. I seriously believe that if this were a fairly common and easy spell, Hermione would have protected the tent before the wedding in Book 7. Hiding from Riddle's goons is a lot easier when they can't find you at all, even looking directly at you. If I were to hazard a guess, Bill named himself secret keeper on a hope that it would work.

I think that Peter was made the Secret Keeper instead of somebody like Lily, James, or Dumbledore because each of them could feasibly have been captured or killed by Death Eaters or forced to talk. Lily and James (Bill was Secret Keeper of his own home, Shell Cottage) likely still went outside under disguise to not go insane or to get supplies and food. At any time, then, Voldemort could’ve found them or killed them either by tip-off or coincidence. They could be tortured in horrific ways, but their weakness would never put Harry into danger, because only the Secret Keeper can magically reveal the location. It was a way to safeguard themselves and ensure that they wouldn’t accidentally reveal the secret in a time of weakness. And a way to ensure that the secret didn’t get out. After all, if the Secret Keeper dies, everyone else who knows of the location becomes a Secret Keeper, for some reason. Having multiple secret keepers at once is risky, and would’ve increased the chances of revealing the secret. Thus, Lily and James were terrible choices, as Voldemort was already actively hunting them. Dumbledore, as a public figure who Voldemort wanted out of the way the most, was also a terrible choice due to this. And Sirius Black, with his reckless nature and dangerous missions, was a bad choice too. Even Remus Lupin, with his werewolf missions, was a bad choice. So who could the Potters trust to keep the secret? Someone like Peter, on the other hand, is completely unexpected. Not only would they likely have told him the address anyway, as he was their good friend, but he likely didn’t perform dangerous missions for the Order very often due to his average abilities and fearful nature. And we know that he didn’t use his Animagus Form publicly, as Dumbledore didn’t even know about it. He was out of the limelight and presumably in far less danger due to his meek nature and how he faded into the background among the Order’s more targeted figures. Peter’s Animagus form allowed him to slip away from trouble and do so as a surprise to evade enemies. His supposed loyalty was ironclad from years of friendship. He would’ve known the address to their house anyway, and he was someone who would be completely unexpected as Secret Keeper, which means that the secret would be less likely to be revealed. In conclusion, Peter Pettigrew was the PERFECT Secret Keeper for the Potters. Or, he would’ve been, if he had been as loyal as they had thought him to be.

I think Lilly would have been the better choice. If either her or James left the house for supplies, instead of ordering them via Owl Post, the other would have had to stay at home with Harry. Lilly didn't seem to have the desire to leave the house or roam like James did. I do see your point on Peter seemingly being loyal and would be completely unexpected. I also like your reasoning on him using his animagus form to escape from trouble. I merely believe Lilly would have been the better choice.

If Sirius was secret keeper and was killed, everyone he had told would be come secret keeper and therefore expose a lot more risk. By making pettigrew the secret keeper, they assumed he wouldn’t be targeted and killed meaning the secret would stay with him. Assuming they are both on your side, it actually makes sense to have Peter as the secret keeper as Voldmeort would go after Sirius and ignore Pettigrew

They didn’t take into account Wormtail’s affinity to be fearful. People who base their decisions on fear are not reliable people - because fear rules over every other value. This is why Death Eaters loyalty was fickle. Voldemort ruled with fear.

The Potters never suspected Remus of being the spy. It was only Sirius that suspected Remus of being the spy. Remus even tells Harry in Deathly Hallows that James would have regarded it as the height of dishonor to mistrust friends.

It was only Sirius. Despite becoming an animagus to help Lupin out, Sirius used him as a murder weapon that had it succeeded would have landed Remus in Azkaban. Sirius may have been in Gryffindor unlike his family, but he was still a Black raised to be superior and look down on others. Despite being a werewolf, Lupin was also a halfblood. Sirius really only accepted Lily because he cared so much for James.

Because Lupin was on missions for Dumbledore frequently, presumably to talk to the werewolves and keep them from joining Voldemort. This meant that he was gone often, and in constant danger, which is one of the reasons why Sirius suspected him of being the traitor in the Order. If the Secret Keeper dies, everyone else who knows the secret becomes a Secret Keeper, thus making multiple Secret Keepers. If Lupin or Sirius died on a dangerous mission, you now have multiple people who can disclose the secret (instead of just the original 1). That’s why they weren’t good choices. Plus, they were strong wizards and would’ve been easily suspected of it, as Voldemort would’ve found out about the Fidellus Charm due to the traitor anyway. Lily and James also were bad choices, because, even in isolation, they presumably still went out to get food, supplies, and to stop from going insane. They likely went under disguise, but they could’ve been caught anyway. Voldemort was actively hunting them both. This put them into too much danger, and meant that neither should be the Secret Keeper. Peter was the perfect choice because he was unexpected and overshadowed by so many others. Yet he was in the Order, not suspected of traitorous activities, and had been a friend of James’ for many years. Lily, James, and Sirius had no reason to not trust Wormtail. We even know that it took Peter over a year and a half to betray that information, even when he had already been a traitor by the time that Harry was born.

Plus if i remember right Remus was away often to spy on the werewolf colonies for Dumbledore, but the other didn't know this. This could have added to the mistrust.

I have a slightly different take! Personally I think Sirius knew pettigrew was scared and I also think Dumbledore and Sirius would have done as much as possible to keep the secret keeper safe due to the Fidelius charm diluting if the secret keeper dies. So I think Sirius wanted death eaters to hunt him hoping to kill him and dilute the charms power whilst Peter stayed in his hiding place (as mentioned when Sirius was telling lupin) no one would consider pettigrew or looking for pettigrew who would be expertly hidden and safe something they all knew pettigrew secretly wanted. As shown in order of the phoenix Sirius was not a fan of hiding so the switch happened. Sirius could keep fighting on the frontline, James and lily were protected as was pettigrew and they were all able to hide away until the war ended. Atleast I think that's why the switch happened

According to the films at least, the way I understand that part of The Prisoner of Azkaban, James would indeed punish Wormtail, but he wouldn't want his two best friends to become murders. That part, is important to include. We get told later, that murdering another person, is so much against nature, that it splits the soul into pieces. And Harry might be right about his father, about that. That James, didn't want for Serius and Lupin, his two best friends, to get their souls split and broken

In the books, when Hermione goes to the wizard pet shop wanting to adopt, she is told the cat she picks has been there for many years & what happened to his previous owner is unknown. (They basically thought he was so old & cranky that he would never accept a new owner.) Later, when Sirius is then trying to get into Hogwarts in his dog form (before everyone knows he is innocent) Crookshanks is seen running up to a strange dog as if it was a friend. Even before that Crookshanks also keeps chasing Ron's rat Scabbers when he sees him out of his cage. It's implied that Crookshanks must've been the Potters' cat because he recognized Sirius as a friend & also recognized Pettigrew in rat form but also knew Pettigrew shouldn't be sneaking around. An old letter found later by the kids in Sirius' belongings was a letter from the Potters thanking them for Harry's 1st birthday gift & it mentioned something about the cat too, so it was confirmed they had a cat when they went into hiding.

This might be a controversial opinion, but I think that it might have been fate that Wormtail was chosen. If the secret keeper didn't reveal the location to Voldemort, then the dark lord wouldn't "mark him as his equal, but he will have power the dark lord knows not." Once Voldemort choose the Potters, Lilly's fate was sealed. She would sacrifice herself to protect her son from the dark lord.

Hot take but to me it makes no sense to choose oneself as secret keeper for a place. What if there are people in need for help or to be found in that secret place? It makes total sense that a 3rd party is made secret keeper. With this been said. Is absurd the situation where the maraurders doubt each other. That's very unlikely and out of character. Although it seems to be a plot hole. But I'll say that Sirius was a bit of a coward sometimes. He was impulsive and wasn't so smart. So i think in the pressure of the situation, he just got himself off the hook and Remus. So he chose Petter because he had not much regard for him therefore didn't think he was capable of much. Sirius probably thought that Voldemort would not suspect of him and wouldn't bother to ask him. But little did he know. Sirius probably took a huge surprise when he saw what Petter was capable of when he wanted to.
