incorrect about the sorting. the hat places students based upon the qualities the student PRIZES...not the qualities the student POSSESSES. It is our CHOICES that determine who we are...far more than our abilities. Pettigrew was a coward, but he valued those who were brave. we sought solice and protection by surrounding himself with people he saw were stronger and braver then he. For a time...this meant james potter and the maurders....until he sought to be protected by a wizard he felt even more powerful...voldemort.

The difference between Peter and Neville is Peter had to deal with James while Neville got to be friends with Harry. It's a lesson in treating everyone equally, even if they may not be as smart/talented/attractive, because they have inherent worth as a human. James was a bully and ultimately it impacted his relationships with people close to him and was a factor in Peter's betrayal. If Harry, Ron and Hermione had treated Neville like that, I think we can imagine Neville walking over to the other side in Deathy Hallows.

The magical hand Voldemort gave him after he sacrificed his own arm to essentially resurrect Voldemort(though he technically didn’t die as such) had a curse built into it that if Wormtail ever thought of disobeying Voldemort, the hand would turn on him and choke him to death. The reason the hand turned on him was because at Malfoy Manor when Harry and the others were imprisoned in the basement awaiting their fate, Wormtail was under orders to dispose of them(apart from Harry who was to be handed to Voldemort)but Harry stopped him by reminding him that he owed Harry a life debt from when Harry refused to let Sirius and Remus kill Wormtail. Wormtail hesitated for a second and that was enough for the hand to turn on him, Harry, Ron and Hermionie tried everything to save him but couldn’t and as such Wormtail was strangled to death by his own hand.

I really don't blame him for betraying his "friends" they treated him like a punching bag and constantly threw him down mentally. Those aren't friends, they are punks. The same thing happened to Sirius when James would torment him when they were in school. Although he didn't betray them due to his love for Lilly, it could have easily turned him as well. In the end Harry one of the only ones who didn't degrade him and actually helped him, did not die by his hands as he stopped himself because of Harry's good actions towards him. Sirius never repented for trying to get Snape killed. Remus was still a coward that was too afraid to go against his thug friends. Harry was stuck with the Dursleys for over 12 years. What was Sirius' reason for finally breaking out of prison? Was it because he was so worried about his godson? Was it because he was concerned about the rest of his friends? Nope, he saw an ex-friend he wanted to murder. What a wonderful person! And he wasn't in love with Harry because he loved his godson that much. No, it was because he saw James every time he looked at Harry. he even cussed Harry out for not being more like James. Mind you, he didn’t change sides because he thought was Voldemort was doing was bad or anything. Sirius hates Snape, but he said himself he feels bad and Remus made him feel guilty. They obviously would admit they weren’t great people. But in comparison? It’s not as bad as stuff Snape did, not the fact that Snape bullies children as a 30+ year old man. That’s worse. They didn’t notice Peter was a traitor because he’s been their friend for 10 years, Peter is is like the Neville of the group, it’s not that they wouldn’t notice because he’s a twat. It’s in fact because he is too in the background to seem like he’d do anything. Would Harry think Neville would betray him? No because Harry thinks the same way as James. Harry doesn’t believe anyone he knows would’ve betrayed him during the 7 potters mission, and Remus points out how he’s just like his dad because James trusted his friends completely. That’s all it is, because James is a dick to people he likes, we know. But he’s extremely loyal to his friends. I think y’all overcomplicate things
@jameswitt1087 ай бұрын
@@ChanBang-bm9ci He would agree because he's the only one we actually see go through a massive change in character. He was bigoted against muggleborns as a child due to his childhood and school experiences but at the end of the story he couldn't even stand hearing slurs against them and protected them at great personal risk for no reward. I'm pretty sure culpability for the Potter's demise was down to Pettigrew, Voldemort, Snape and the Marauders failed plans although Snape defected and sought their protection as soon he realized Lily was in danger mind you at this time he had no obligation to help Lily and if he were the kind of person you think he was he'd have gleefully rejoiced in her destruction. The fact that Snape did change sides is more admirable imo than those who never had an incentive to defect to either side, the Marauders never had a reason to join Voldemort just like Lucius never had a reason to join Dumbledore because it wasn't in their interests to do so. The light side was dominant in wizarding society and they were rich and popular whereas Snape had a plethora of reasons to join Voldemort, chiefly societal rejection, seeking power, status and knowledge none of which the light side offered him and yet he turned away from this when it mattered. There's no evidence Sirius feels bad about his treatment of Snape and he continues to disrespect him even as an Order member and Remus is a classic case of the bystander effect from his schooling days, consider that Snape brewed him wolfsbane potion and taught his classes when he was incapacitated and Remus still resorted to childish pranks reminiscent of the Marauder era so he's no better. You say they would admit to not being great people but that just isn't in their character, they've not shown an ounce of self awareness so much so they couldn't see that one of their mates was disaffected to the point that he betrayed them, Sirius and James thought so little of Remus and were bigoted against him as a werewolf to the point that they assumed he was the traitor and arrogantly changed the password keeper to their own detriment. We haven't even talked about Sirius's betrayal of Remus by sending Snape to see him at the whomping willow as a werewolf, he basically treated a person who was supposed to be his friend as a pit bull for a prank. With regards to teachers please note that Harry Potter depicts english teachers of the time in an exhagerated manner as according to Filch, it’s not long ago that students were punished with days-long sessions of extreme physical punishment, and we see the Ministry authorise him to whip the students. Arthur Weasley, who was at school during the 1960s, was punished for canoodling with Molly in some way so severe that he was physically scarred for life. Molly is held up as the ideal mother, yet she beats Fred with a broom handle and publicly humiliates her kids with Howlers. Hagrid is held up as this lovely sweet guy, yet we see him carry out a vicious, painful and potentially lethal magical attack on a terrified 11-year-old just because he doesn’t like the kid’s father, then mock his pain and his weight problem. Later he mocks Draco in front of the class over the ferret incident, and salivates over the prospect of setting his boarhound on an elderly cat, feeds Buckbeak on piles of pets and uses “Muggle” and “Squib” as slurs. False Moody batters Draco repeatedly against a stone floor as he screams in pain - and evidently this is the kind of thing Real Moody would do, since it rings no alarm bells. McGonagall isn’t concerned about the beating, only the Transfiguration, and allows him to drag Draco away without even checking for broken bones or internal bleeding first. She drags students around by the ear. Her backstory states that she is prejudiced against Slytherins. She does nothing to help Neville with his memory problems, although she is his Head of House and although she admits feeling guilty about how badly she treated Peter while pampering his friends, instead, she calls Neville “abysmally stupid”, punishes him with weeks of deliberate humiliation, and tells him in front of the whole class not to let the other schools see how useless at magic he is. Prior to the Sectumsempra incident, which was kind of special, that we get to see, she gives out three times as many detentions as Snape does and he gives five detentions to Gryffindors and three to Slytherins, which hardly suggests extreme bias. Even Flitwick calls a student “a baboon brandishing a stick”, and nearly all the staff, except Snape, routinely put students in danger. But all the silly little antiSnape folks are only concerned with the fact that Snape was a bit rude and overbearing, and made a couple of obviously empty threats. You're misrepresentng the events, they didn't notice Peter because they thought he was pathetic, it couldn't cross their mind that he could such a thing. Sirius said as much in POA. In Sirius' own words: ‘Lily and James only made you Secret-Keeper because I suggested it... I thought it was the perfect plan... Voldemort would be sure to come after me, would never dream they'd use a weak, talentless thing like you... It must have been the finest moment of your miserable life, telling Voldemort you could hand him the Potters.’ Sirius never thought Peter was capable of betraying the Order. To return to the harshness above I feel like Sirius always underestimated Wormtail in almost every sense. It isn’t a stretch to believe that Sirius thought Pettigrew lacked the nerve and cunning necessary to play spy and traitor. Snape's no Saint and I probably wouldn't like him but just like Harry I'd deeply respect him as a man compared to a lot of characters in the story as he genuinely changed his ways, put his life on the line and got nothing for it.
@ChanBang-bm9ci7 ай бұрын
@@jameswitt108 I don’t mean to be rude, but this comment is very long and there’s nothing you convince me that Snape isn’t a rubbish person since I’ve already read the books. He develops, okay. But he still bullies children, which is worse since he’s a grown man. Even after his development he’s still not a good person either so none of that matters in this conversation. Whether he admits or not doesn’t matter. The point is he’s still a rubbish person, regardless of everything. I didn’t misinterpret anything, I know Sirius suggested it because he thought Peter was pathetic. I was even going to write that, but that’s Sirius. It’s still canon that James is too trusting, that isn’t misinterpreting. Remus says so, both things can be true because James and Sirius are different people.
