I think people forget that Sky Bison are VERY attached to their nomads they bond with. I’m sure MANY bison died along side their nomads during the Air Nation genocide. We find species today even though they were declared extinct. It's very likely that with the death of all the air nomads, they simply flew to some far off forest and avoided human contact. It bugs me that they did the species thing backwards for appa and momo. In Korra the lemurs look completely different, and the bison look the same, when it should've been the other way around. Momo was around after Aang was unfrozen so there should be other lemurs like him still around. Likewise, if they came out with a new type of wild flying bison that was brown instead of white, and maybe had different horns, that would make much more sense for the air acolytes to try and domesticate.

I mean their sky Bison-.. most likely the only other changes they would have made was making them either smaller, different colors, different feet, something that they may have felt wouldn’t fit the feel we were all accustomed to. Appa was a much more substantial character than Momo in the original series (tho we loved him) Appa had a whole story arch of his own. And when creating a continuation of what some consider a near masterpiece for a “children’s” tv show, I would assume they just wanted to keep some familiarity. Also if their were plenty of lemurs around, it would make since that there would be plenty of various species left. Besides there were VERY small differences in the Bison in the legend of Korra. Plus I was like 10-12 when I watched this so I had a very high suspension of disbelief and still do, but I see where your coming from 😂

@stefansalvatierra49136 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly. I may not be a big fan of LOK, this was one of the things I liked. And I read Blood Memory not too long ago. From 60 million bison on the Great Plains to only around 300 in only a few decades, and mostly for sport and to force the native Americans to give up their livelihoods, starving them into submission. Even the bones of the fallen were collected to be ground into fertilizer to make a profit. Thankfully not everyone was on board with that destructive mindset. Bison numbers have since bounced back thanks to the conservation efforts of those who refused to let one of America’s symbols disappear forever. The same with LOK that a good number of sky bison were spared from the devastation of the Air Nomad genocide, thanks to some in the Fire Nation who refused to carry out Sozin’s twisted ideals..

From what i always believed is that who ever was in charge of caring for the bison helped many of them escape that weren't bonded with a nomad. These more then like mated with other bison collected as each herder more then likely met and settled down on an island to protect them in hopes that survivers would return. Air benders died out due to lack of genetics and the herds went wild. Yes it was only 100 years but if the remaining herders were older and unable to produce children it makes sense.

@RyanD8293 Жыл бұрын
Well, they were super charged (☄) so the collateral damage would have been...excessive. But I agree that would not have at all been a priority. That said, the bison likely would have tried to protect their riders and monks and temples overall so if they (🔥) had to go through them (🦬) to succeed in their (🌬) gen-o-cide, they definitely would have. So I gotta side with the bison AT the air temples were probably wiped out. Wild ones, however, would not have been worth any amount of trouble toward the FN's goals and that's where they (✍) fcked up. Were there none out of captivity by the time Sozin's Comet came 'round? Cuz if they can fly wouldn't they spread out EVERYWHERE they can fly to/live thus making their territory like the whole planet and them practically impossible to kill off without first controlling ALL land they'd be found? Shouldn't there then at least be multiple subspecies based on that so the lost/hidden comic/Korra breed actually wouldn't be special on it's own because it's actually just one of several though it is still special as the ONLY other domesticated breed left that humans could still make use of? Though there were "wild bison" in LoK so they ALMOST got it. Haha but not really...(poof) domesticated! 🏇 Then let's not even get into how NONE of the AIR *NOMADS* were scattered all over the world when...well...you can probably guess where I'm going with that. Dogs have breeds, race is a misunderstanding of ethnicity that stuck around as a superstition

Idk Mike and Bryan used the word species in the Comic Con interview so that’s why I used that instead of breed or subspecies
@dallascopp47982 жыл бұрын
I think you mean different breeds. Race as we know it in humans typically refers to as differences in skin tone, hair texture and small facial feature differences. All races of humans can breed with one another. However, Breeds of dogs are almost constitute as different species and it is not actually a good idea for some breeds to breed with each other, like Great Danes and Chihuahuas. Neat idea but physically impossible for it to happen without medical intervention for it to occur. They are also genetically the same. The different sky bisons here could constitute different species depending on their genetic breakdown from the extinct bison used by the air benders and on how fast their evolutionary processes are. Different horns and fur are a good indicator in animals to suggest they are genetically different from the other animals that look like them.
@rainpooper70882 жыл бұрын
@The Ghost of Several Things The slip-up is understandable, as there are several languages that used to use „race“ for both, but phased out the term in relation to people to the point where no one would even think of humans whenever „race“ is mentioned. „Breed“ on the other hand implies that someone selectively bred an animal to be a certain way, so it wouldn’t apply here either. „Subspecies“ is what would make the most sense.

@@yammoto148 uh huh. So breaking down your comment a bit. While what you said can slightly be true, (i-....I guess. You just sound butthurt mostly honestly. But anyways.) he's not wrong. He could've been nicer about it, sure. But that's beside the point. Korra has some of the worst writing of any show that's come out in the last 2 decades. If you can't see that yourself, you have no critical thinking whatsoever, and you're the reason why we keep getting the same situations over and over in many different shows. Elitist comments or not.
@yammoto1482 жыл бұрын
@@dragonkingbreaker6 It has flaws, but so does every show, the issue is fans of the last airbender seem to put a magnifying glass over those flaws instead of acknowledgine the shows highs and lows. And a lot of the so called writing flaws are easily explained away with simple logic and paying attention. I am tied of people hating on new stuff because it doesn't quite tickle their nostalgia centres. Also your point about it having the worst writing in comparison to any show in the past 2 decades tells me you haven't watched anything for the past 2 decades. In fact its argueably better than half of the stuff that comes out now days so its very hard for me to respect your viewpoint at all.
@dragonkingbreaker62 жыл бұрын
@@yammoto148 so breaking down your reply comment. Addressing your 4th sentence. So, that quite literally tells me you're butthurt about someone having anything to say about the legend of korra, or any show. Because it makes absolutely no sense, and you know it does. Why you said something like that, in response to my vague statement, (because i mean come on, why you chose to take that apart, say all that you've said in response to that. Then try and make something out of that is seriously odd.) is actually quite concerning. Now addressing your second sentence of that paragraph. That is quite literally, the ONLY sense, and objectionable statement you've replied to me with. If it's difficult to respect my viewpoint, that's perfectly fine. Both you and I, and everyone are allowed to do that. The only thing that would make that wrong, is if you didn't acknowledge me saying what i said. You're going to think all that I'm saying from this point on is me being condescending, (trust me, I know how it can seem that way. I can also understand why you and others would think i come off that way given how i said my first comment. But i was on a crunch for time with my other comment, it was also only in response to your other comments since you were originally a bit to begin with. Because i was on my break at work.) but that's not my intent at all. I just genuinely don't understand some things people reply to me with. Especially the way you did, since you seemed a tad bit hostile originally with your other comments, even before I addressed you. Addressing your second sentence. You're both correct, and incorrect. I've watched both shows, and read all of the books/comics MULTIPLE times. Simple logic can be applied in most cases to some of the shows aspects, (hence this short. Simple logic, and critical thinking, can give you a legitimate answer as to why they didn't go extinct.) but not all of them, and you know it cant. The best example of this, is the relationship between Korra, Mako, and Asami. There is absolutely no legitimate, sound reasoning, as to what happened with their relationship. None. It IS addressed VERY MINISCULEY in the comics to how Korra and Asami ended up getting together. But theres no, "simple logic." or, "just paying attention" tone to it at all, to explain why things went down between the 3 of them the way that they did. There's MULTIPLE other examples of how faulty the writing is, pertaining to other sources in the show. But that's one of the main issues the true fans, (not the ones you describe as "hating." on things due to "nostalgia." as you put it.) have with the show. Addressing your first sentence. So, PLENTY of people have acknowledged both the high and the lows of the legend of Korra. That's why they have such harsh criticism towards it. You can call it throwing "hate." or "being an elitist." all that you want. But it doesn't change the fact, that the majority of fans have actual, sound reasoning to why they dislike certain aspects of the show. But you're writing it off as "hate", because they're saying things that you don't agree with, saying its somehow part of "nostalgia" for some odd reason. While you want to continue to argue, (which honestly, given how you're structuring your comments/replies. You seem to be one of the "stan elitists." I've heard so much about.) for no other reason than the fact, you can't understand why people won't just sit there and take something as it is. It seems like you think, (honest to god, it really does seem this way given what youve said so far.) it shouldn't be analyzed/criticized to certain capacities. When that's not how anything in life works, especially with this kind of thing. You're part of the reason directors/producers of shows/movies, keep getting away with the same troupes/schticks all the time. You don't actually analyze things, and you don't take in feedback from others taking in the same information thats given to you as well. You then somehow write it all off as "hate" when it's something that actually could/have sound reasoning for people to not be okay with. Sure, people could be nicer about it. But the point is still the same. You think it's wrong for people to have opinions that differ from yours, because they actually could have sound reasoning, (sure, some can be "elitist" and very adamant about how they choose to bring up what they're trying to say/argue.) for not liking something, and you want it to just be accepted for what it is. At least, that's how you're coming off as with your comments/replies for the most part anyhow. If this were about people themselves, and how they're throwing hate, (I mean ACTUAL hate. Racism, bullying, etc.) I would be on board with you 100%, and have no arguments whatsoever. But it's not. This is about an entertainment factor, pertaining to certain things within that entertainment factor. Everyone has the right to say/object to things pertaining to forms of entertainment, as long as it puts no one down in any way, shape or form. Now, to wrap this all up. Nostalgia, and all that you've said in your third sentence. Has nothing to do why some fans, (the ones who have actual, genuine critical thinking. Not the "haters" in which you claim to be out there.) dislike things about the legend of Korra. Why you even said that, and tried using that for any argument you tried to make in response to me in anything that i said. I actually find ludicrous to be honest. The true fans, are actually tired of the same thing happening, over and over again, in different styles of entertainment, but its just not shown to the extent everyone notices it to be. Especially since certain details are so subtley hidden, and are never addressed in depth later on since they don't affect the action. But those certain details, DO affect how certain outcomes/events happened, and it shifts the storytelling with no in depth explanation. Which again, action wise it doesnt matter. Storytelling, it does matter. That is the main reason people "hate." on legend of Korra so much. Certain things don't add up to the way they should, regardless of easy explanations, or simply paying attention. If you, and or anyone else have read this far, (trust me, I know it's a lot to read. But I wanted to cover all bases.) Thank you kindly for replying to me! I appreciate reading you and everyone else's comments since I do love both avatar shows, and I always love reading others input/insight to both. If you didn't. Well either way, I hope you all are having a wonderful day/night!

Given how generally similar the two sky bison species are, I think it's safe to assume that they probably could interbreed
@calamitysangfroid24075 ай бұрын
Honestly the easy answer is that there were wild bison that didn't live with air nomads. The fire nation has no reason to hunt them down, they were just collateral.

Admittedly they could have had an off hand comment. Yeah a handful of bison flew away and managed to find a secluded island where they rapidly evolved into a totally new sub species ( which is an actual thing that happens on island) and then Aang found them and managed to domesticate them somewhat. However they’re way more flighty and shy around strangers than Appa’s kind were.

It’s probably not a completely different species, but another breed of air bison. I could also imagine there being differences to air bison from temple to temple, like how there’s many different horse breeds around the world (or cow breeds)

Totally makes sense that the sky bison, of all animals, could have a sub species totally untamed by the air nomads somewhere else around the world. Especially since they’re all about freedom, I’m sure the air nomads aren’t actively searching for and rounding up every living bison in the world. Though the biggest problem with this is that we were to believe that Appa was the last sky bison, I wish that they’d actually just explain or show us that there were remaining bison within the shows/comics/novels themselves, instead of just telling us in an interview. Unless I’m forgetting something from the shows/comics/novels, so remind me.

i find it hard to believe that low numbers of captive bison were able to multiply a lot considering there mightve been some inbreeding present.

Honestly, it makes sense how not a single Airbender managed to escape and survive, because any airbending master who could survive on their own in the world would have stayed and tried to defend their home, and any novice airbenders who would lack such an obligation also probably lacked the skills not to be hunted down by the fire nation.
