Tang was so influential that Chinese characters were adopted by Japanese and Korean. The latter invented a new language, which is ingenious in its own right, but still use Chinese characters for names of people and places; and the Japanese language still has Kanji characters. Zen Buddhism and Tang architecture largely survived and thrived in Japan too. Katana was originally based on Tang Dao. Korea perhaps received a larger influence later from Ming, 8 centuries after the peak of Tang. A fascinating period of Chinese / Asian history indeed.

@@Wandrative Cool...while I understand that some of the first waves of Buddhists came to Japanese via Korean Peninsula in the 6th century but the architecture of Japanese Buddhist/Shinto temples were largely following Chinese styles and principles, with native adaptations to cope with a more rainy climate. X literally every Buddhist and Shinto temple built during the Asuka and Nara periods were built by Beakje Architects and Artisans - or built by their deciples. They dont even look Chinese at all. You should first understand the Architectural differences between Liang/Song/Sui/Tang vs Tuyuhun/Tibet vs Yan/Wei vs Goguryeo/Beakje/Silla/Yamato. Which were four major trends of architectural styles around the first millenium AD. After the fall of Goguryeo-Beakje, Yamato receives a great amount of influence from China, particularly to its Imperial and Bakufu artistic culture, but religious culture was very traditionalist and mostly kept its original artistic form. The Asuka-Dera Temple for example, was directly commissioned by the Beakje King by the request of the Soga clan - Beakje sent a large team of its architects, artisans, masters of tiles, masters of carpentry, painters, etc directly to Japan to build for them. Later, Prince Shotoku hires some of them to commission the Horyuji Temple - which was the simplified version of the Neunsanrlisaji Temple in Beakje. Japanese religious architecture and customs preserve Classical Korean culture whilst Korea itself got increasingly sinicized by Song and Ming. Understanding Eastern Asia through a Sinocentric viewpoint is very problematic.

China's history is much greater than you think. The ancient Egyptian sculptures found in the Mediterranean are very different from the Indonesian undersea Buddha statues. It is obvious that there is no seaweed or shellfish on the surface of Egyptian sculptures for more than 4000 years. Some people ask, why do Westerners fake cultural relics? In particular, they went to fake Egypt, which they could not fight. The answer is simple. The main reason is that the history of Western countries is very short, there are not many shocking real cultural relics, there are real who will fake ah. The West regards ancient Greece as the source of culture, and ancient Greek culture comes from ancient Egypt, so it went to ancient Egypt to fake it. Some people say that Europe was already more advanced than China during the Renaissance. In fact, during the 14th century European Renaissance, the commercial city-states such as Venice and Genoa along the Mediterranean coast were indeed more advanced than some parts of China. At that time, however, there were only ten cities in Europe with a population of more than 60,000. To leave the population on many historical issues is to play hooligans. At that time, Europe had such a small population, where could it go advanced? Before the Renaissance, the population of Europe was imaginable, and of course there were no antiques left. Many European countries were gradually formed during the Renaissance. European countries absorbed the advanced culture of the whole Eurasian continent and were born to run to modern countries. Therefore, modern Europe is very brilliant, ancient times is very blank. In fact, the fish and bear's paw can not have both, and there is nothing wrong with it, as long as the Europeans accept it. However, Europeans are unwilling to accept the fact that their ancestors were uneducated. They would like to say that ancient Greece is the source of European culture, and ancient Greek culture comes from ancient Egypt and the Middle East. It is true that ancient Greece and Egypt have a longer history than Europe, but compared with China, the ancient relics of the two brothers are too few, unsystematic and uninherited. Forced to do so, the rising European powers had to forge cultural relics to glorify their ancestors. The above is the first reason why Western cultural relics are fake: if it is not true, it has to be falsified. Second, commercial interests. Chinese archaeologists work for the country. Where tombs and cultural relics are found, archaeologists carry out protective excavations. These archaeologists are paid by the state, and whether or not to excavate rare cultural relics has little impact on their interests. Almost all of the Western archaeologists unearthed in Egypt are private and commercially motivated. For them, archaeology is a kind of business. They spend all their money or take the money of investors to archaeology. They must find something, otherwise they will lose everything. Therefore, they have more incentive to fake. If you look for an ancient tomb and put in some human bones and pottery, you dare say it is the tomb of Aristotle. If you find a pile of rocks, you dare say it's the ancient city of Troy. Third, I feel the pressure from Chinese history and cultural relics. The Cairo Museum in Egypt has more than 300,000 cultural relics, the British Museum has 100000 ancient Egyptian cultural relics, and the American Metropolitan Museum has more than 20, 000 Egyptian cultural relics. How many cultural relics do Chinese provincial museums have? First place, Sichuan, 4.19 million pieces. Second place, Shandong, 3.3 million pieces. Third place, Shanghai, 2.25 million pieces. Tenth Shanxi, 980000 pieces. By contrast, the number of Western antiquities (including ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, ancient Rome) is too small, including hundreds of thousands of fakes. It's not as much as a provincial museum in China. What? Cold salad, can only continue to fake. Unfortunately, Westerners do not have a high level of fraud. The reason why fakes on the Chinese cultural relic market look real is that counterfeiters have seen the real ones. Western counterfeiters have never seen the real product, directly based on imagination, the result can only be full of loopholes. Never believed in the fabricated history of Westerners. The hypocritical Westerners have not even seen what stones should look like thousands of years later. These childish fakes can only deceive some foolish people.History does not allow any modification.History does not allow any modification.

In the middle of the 17th century, about 1650, a missionary who had returned to Europe from China published a book that caused a sensation. This missionary is Italian, his Chinese name is wei kuangguo (Martino Martini, 1614 -- 1661); Soon, he came to China again, until his death, his tomb in hangzhou. The book is called the history of ancient China, and it contains an unusual history, namely fu xi, huang di, yao, shun, yu and so on (three sovereigns and five emperors). This period of history is not recognized by today's Chinese and foreign academic circles. In my opinion, the western-centered theory not only deliberately shortens the history of China, but also, more importantly, it is related to this period of history in order to conceal the true origin of the modern west. It was this period of history (fu xi, huang di, yao, shun, yu) that initiated one of the most important and far-reaching revolutions in the west. Originally, europeans believed that the human story described in the bible from genesis to the flood was true, unique and all-encompassing. Now there are books and documents that prove that there is an ancient people and a noble civilization even before the narration of the bible! In this way, the Christian myth was exposed and the sanctity of Christianity was overturned. The result is that europeans are reshaping the west in the "China model"; There are two aspects: remaking the present, through the enlightenment; Remaking the past, by writing history. Wei's "Chinese history" opened the prelude of the European enlightenment. The enlightenment was a transition from a society of gods to a society of men. In the history of the world, only China and its sphere of influence were "human societies". Therefore, the whole process of the enlightenment, from the middle of the 17th century to the end of the 18th century, was guided by Chinese culture. It can also be said that westerners' spiritual "sinicization", Confucianism was called "natural god" instead of the Christian god, and Confucius was regarded as "the patron saint of the enlightenment". As an important achievement of the enlightenment, western democracy was realized after a hundred years. An indispensable part of this process is the introduction of the civil service system and examination system in ancient China. During the two opium wars, Britain began to test this system in the east India company, and after 1870, it was introduced to the British mainland and the whole British empire. Other European countries have done the same. In 1883, the United States congress approved the introduction of the Chinese civil service and examination system. It was Jefferson's idea, but there was a long-running argument: the opponents attacked the pros as "chinks", not americans; In 1881, the transfer of the matter is, a complain about "unfair" job of americans to assassinate the President Garfield, congress to discuss, to speed up the process, finally decided to go the way of the UK, during a chord, namely "in the world, we the most young, take the oldest proven advanced system of the state". The above is said to be the extension of "modern west Chinese derivative"; Speaking of its connotation, that is "Chinese character code". Around the 15th century, after the introduction of the four great inventions to Europe, westerners relied on printing and paper to lock and specify the phonetic symbols, or letters, that gave birth to the "phonetic script." The earliest phonetic languages in the west were religious -- Latin and Greek. The Greek language has nothing to do with ancient Greece or modern Greece. It was originally slavic-orthodox, Shared by Judaism, and later became a tool for western-centered falsification of history. With the spread of printing, secular languages (French, English, German... They have sprung up one after another. However, the emergence of secular phonetic languages caused a serious crisis. There was no writing, little communication, and no common misunderstanding. Now "each table its sound" has become a text, but there is no reasonable semantic, speak not clear reason; Bickering and acrimony have fueled an ongoing religious war that is hard to reconcile. This is what Europe looked like in the first half of the 17th century. At the beginning of the 17th century, bacon pointed out that western characters are only phonetic symbols without meaning. Chinese characters, on the other hand, are "real characters", expressing things, concepts and ideas. Chinese characters are the "currency" of various languages -- a "universal medium", like money, independent of local dialects. Since then, for 150 consecutive years, the European language reform, are based on the Chinese characters as a model or model. It is now commonly said that "the scientific revolution took place in the 17th century", but in fact all the participants at that time -- Descartes, Newton and leibniz included -- were doing their best to break through the "language bottleneck". Its peak was in 1668 when the royal society discussed Wilkins' paper "the real word and the philosophical language". This "real word" was bacon's Chinese characters. At the meeting, it was mentioned whether Chinese characters could be directly used as western scientific and philosophical characters. Then talk about how to make the western phonetic characters become as philosophical as Chinese characters, this content gradually into reality. It can be said that the modern western phonetic characters parasitic on the "ideographic Chinese characters"; The form of denotation is its own, while the connotation of denotation (definition, concept, etc.) is Chinese. Take an example: "Feudal" word (Feudal) is in the 18th century, and it is the root of "Feud" mean "clan or consanguinity revenge", had nothing to do with the Feudal (" Feudal "has the system and the composition of civilization). In the 18th century, European scholars implanted the concept of "Feudal system in the zhou dynasty" into the old words according to the works of wei kuang and others, thus resulting in the current word "Feudal". Not only that, western scholars simply did not stop, incidentally, according to the meaning of the word, also tampered with the history: The pre-modern west was actually a gothic - Germanic primitive tribal society. Dr. Johnson's English dictionary, published in 1755, defined it that way, calling it "primitive and savage." But it soon became a "feudal society in the middle ages", and also fully adapted the zhou dynasty, including the rank of nobility -- duke, hou, bo, son, baron, the upper king, the lower gentleman; These are the new institutions, the new fashions, that were learned from China in the 17th century, and used to rewrite the past. When talking about the influence of Chinese culture on European philosophy, Mr. Zhu xuanshi said that western philosophy was mainly German philosophy, and its founders leibniz and his disciple wolff were based on Confucian classics. (professor meng xiaolu pointed out that "all philosophy is a modern thing, which is derived from the six classics of Europe".) The contemporary French philosopher derrida confirmed that leibniz used "ideographs in Chinese characters" as the cornerstone of his European philosophy. When talking about the influence on European economics, zhu xuanshi pointed out that the earliest systematic economics in human society should be the pipe. As the main axis of economics in the world history, Chinese traditional economic thought is subordinated to the harmonious and orderly "tao", so it is: natural order (natural philosophy) + socialism + free economy (see meng xiaolu's zhou li li and li xuejun's socialism in ancient China for details). Sima qian lay particular stress on free economy, and his "book of peace and accuracy" and "biography of the merchants" covered most of the categories of Adam Smith, such as the law of value and laissez-faire. Whether the theory of Adam Smith comes from sima qian has long been debated abroad. But there is almost universal agreement that Adam Smith inherited and developed the physiocrats, which were based on traditional Chinese economic ideas (the leader of the physiocrats, quesnay, was called "the European Confucius").

“Li Bai is called the god of poetry.” That’s a misunderstanding of his title. What is interpreted here as “god” in Chinese “xian” refers to an other-worldliness characteristic of the Daoist mentality. The point here is not that he is a great poet, but his perspective and attitude on life is the pursuit of the individual spirit separate from society. A similar problem exists in calling Du Fu “the saint of poetry.” The Chinese word “Shen” can sometimes be substituted by “saint” but not here. “Shen” refers to the pursuit of virtues that relate to our role in society and family, such as compassion, social conscience. Du Fu, unlike Li Bai, was very concerned with the social injustice of his time.

@hiimryan2388 Manchuria as a term was never used by the Qing, and 滿洲 in Qing documents actually referred "the people of Manju/Manzhou" (note: Not land). It was a Japanese cartographer by the name of Takahashi Kageyasu that turned it into a geographic concept in 1809, since it was customary for old East Asian maps to label a region after the group occupying it in their time. Throughout Chinese and Korean history, though, "Manchuria" was actually 3 distinct regions that were never lumped together: (1) Liaodong in the South was viewed as part of China Proper (漢地) since the Kingdom of Yan incorporated it prior to Qin Unification and China remained in control of it for the next millennium; while (2) the Western part was considered the homeland of Xianbei and the original Mongols; and (3) the Eastern part which consisted of the Buyeo and Sushen (overlapping with the Jurchen homeland). When Westerners studied China's geography, they borrowed through Japanese cartographers and so adopted Kageyasu's view, hence borrowing the misnomer "Manchuria." For analogy, this is similar to Westerners adopting the idea of "Indochina," a socially constructed region consisting of Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia that were never grouped together in such a way before.

@@hiimryan2388 The name "Manchuria" is first recorded from Japanese around the 1809, the Chinese historically just called it Dongbei or the "Northeast". The Chinese did call the Jurchens "Manchu" but it never became a geographical name. Manchurian nationalists even stated as much that there isn't a word in either Chinese or Manchu for Manchuria. It is a Japanese invention and was especially promoted for their Manchukuo puppet.

20 years ago, Koreans stole the murals and murals and of Chinese Goguryeo in China 20 years ago. Some unearthed cultural relics, creating a large number of fake history and historical TV series, this is very shameful. In 2003, China had applied for UNESCO to apply for the legacy of Goguryeo King City, king Tombs and aristocratic tombs, and was agreed. In fact, as early as 3 years ago, Korea applied for UNESCO. But it was rejected. Because Goguryeo is the history of the Han people in northern China. It is not Korean history and culture at all. * UNESCO = the United Nations Teaching and Science Organization * The people of goguryeo (and Baekje, Silla) are wearing Chinese han Clothing. They believe in Taiist Culture, Dragon Culture and Chinese God Beasts. The founder of Goguryeo, Jumong(朱蒙) is actually Chinese pronunciation. Goguryeo is 100%of the history of the Han nation in northern China. Like the relationship between Taiwan and Hong Kong today (because of the disagreement of political reasons), they believe in Taoism and wearing Chinese Hanfu and Han culture. 20 years ago, Koreans stole the murals and murals and of Chinese Goguryeo in China 20 years ago. Some unearthed cultural relics, creating a large number of fake history and historical TV series, this is very shameful. Baekje, SILLA is not 100% is the history and cultural relics of Koreans. Their royal and senior personnel are not Koreans. Most of them are members of the northern Han nationality, while the lower levels and civilians are Koreans. They are wearing white and women's clothes show their nipples. Goryeo's founding king-Wang Jian (王建). Wang Jian (王建) is very obviously the immigrants or descendants of the Han people (whether the culture of clothes is the Han culture), this possibility is quite high. Because Wang Jian is the descendant of the Chinese (Han), the regime he has established follows the abbreviation of the ancient country Goguryeo, as the new national name Goryeo. The North Korean people at the southern end of the peninsula were called as workers and slaves (wearing pure white clothes and women to show nipples). Later, they became the civilians of Goryeo. The history of the Korean nation is the history of slave. They have never sovereignty.

Li Jing's 3000 horsemen were led by vanguard Su Lie, another legendary general who joined the rebel forces together with his father against the former dynasty. He often charged ahead of his men while fighting, he was later recruited by Tang and became a well known general who helped Tang defeating multiple enemy states in the north&west such as Turk, Tibet, and east( Baekjie and Goguryeo).

The capital of Tang Dynasty-- Chang'an is the biggest city in the world with more than one million a thousand years ago. Kyoto, Japanese capital at that time actually is the small copy of Chang'an city. Japan sent tremendous amount of students come to Tang to learn its culture, art, architecture and so on... And they create their own language after that. As the Chinese saying goes, "If you wanna go to learn Tang Dynasty, you need to visit Japan". And nowadays, it is a pity that many traditional things have been disappeared in China but find in Japan. It is a really complicated mood for Chinese people!

At this time, the Tang Dynasty was in a so-called "colonial" state, not modern Chinese Han Chinese, but dominated by kings and aristocrats from northern nomadic tribes called Seonbi. Sadly, the Han Chinese, the modern Chinese people, have never had their own Country in their 5,000-year history. (Han-Dongi, Su-Seonbi, Tang-Seonbi, Song-Baekwol, Won-Mongolia, Cheong-Manju, etc.) They're poor peoples who are enslaved under the ruling class, which changes with time. But Fortunately, Mao Zedong, an outstanding figure, succeeded in creating the first national state of Han Chinese people in the wake of the Japanese invasion. In other words the first Han nation was modern China, which was founded in 1949.

You know another very important thing invented in Tang Dynasty (or at least gained popularity during that time): *toilet paper* ! Song Dynasty would be a great topic too. In my opinion two of their most influential inventions were also paper related: paper money / bank note and mass printing. It was also during Song, China's population exceeded 100 million for the first time. Porcelain works of this era were absolutely the best. Factories (or sewing machines or woodwork etc) began to grow and flourish and economy was stronger than Tang. Trading of goods and services were also at a peak - which is why bank notes were invented. Sadly for Song, the mighty riders of the north ended it and 100 years later Ming sow the seeds for the downfall of this giant of a civilisation.

The medieval Big Apple. "Start spreading the news... I wanna be a part of it. Chang'an! Chang'an!" Back then Europeans want to live the Chinese Dream. The Imperial tributary system was the Bretton Woods of the day. And Tang (like the Han) troops brought Freedom abroad.

Victories and failures are common. The Tang Dynasty was already in civil strife at that time, but history also tells you that the Tibetan army was finally driven away by the divided Tang Dynasty army.

有两个问题,唐朝并不是只有盛唐,安史之乱之后还有很长的唐朝统治。 其次,安史之乱之后并不是马上就失去了西域的控制,有一支军队控制着西域很长时间。

Great video, but it is pronounced more like the English word "tong" (i.e. as in a pair of cooking tongs), whereas the way you keep saying it, "tayang", almost sounds like you're trying to say "tangy", as in "this food is too tangy." LOL. Aside from that, you did a fairly solid job charting the history of the Tang dynasty and its territorial expansion.

@@adrianatgaming8640 Bro, people who speak Modern Standard Mandarin don't pronounce it like the narrator either, and more like "tong" in English, but obviously with the uptick accent mark ("táng" 唐) on the "a" vowel.

Recently some scholars found Cantonese might have been the older Chinese pronunciation when northern people migrated south during the Tang Dynasty together with the original pronunciation.. Many famous Tang poems sounded just right when read in Cantonese. Therefore the TANG character Is pronounced as TONG in Cantonese.

China is an amazing country with rich history. However so much of the original culture was destroyed during past wars and cultural revolution. Kids don't respect their parents anymore and ethics/high culture is rare. That is slowly changing as the Chinese are growing especially past 20 years. However the recent administration isn't helping, as people are going back to cultural revolution attitudes and taken over by politics instead of cultural appreciation. China is much bigger than any political ideology and party, hope people don't ever forget that.
