So this nissan Rouge the "electronic coupler" simply transmits power to the rear diff, the open rear diff. Nothing can 100% "Lock up the differential" besides a mechanical locker, even a lsd can only transmit about 25% torque to the tire with no traction. This is just a open diff with a magnetic clutch pack. It's fwd biased untill it senses slippage and then it transmits power via the magnetic clutch to the rear diff.

Why the hell would they put a brake on the pinion gear when its the relative speed between the driven wheels that is the problem? Even if its an AWD vehicle with two diffs that's a dumb way to go. Smarter would be to modify the existing traction control system to selectively apply the appropriate service brake. And the best way would be to chuck all of the electronic bloat in the garbage and design a smart and efficient hydraulic differential torque balancer that just works using 1920's technology. I wish modern engineers trained on classic cars so that they can realize that you don't need to complicate what should be a simple physics equation of getting from point A to point B using the least amount of energy E. E by the way, includes the human energy required to maintain the vehicle in good repair. No one seems to take that into consideration these days. -Rant over.

I was gonna say you are kinda right, 90% of modern AWD systems use open diffs in conjunction with the ABS system to transfer power from one wheel to the other along the same axel... a clutch system is used to transfer torque from the main drive axel to the other. This is usually a FWD arrangement with RWD being a 60/40 split in most cases. This being said not rotating your tires in spec is just as bad as mixing new and old tires. Especially if the difference is front to back. Side to side will result in excess brake usage and warped rotors. Front to back difference can cause the clutch pack explosion that you are showing. So people maintain your cars correctly lol. And listen to your mechanic, chances are they have your best interest in mind. But second opinions aren't bad too.

Well I’m a technician over at Rockwell Automation and we have differentials that not only provide inverse reactive current, for use in unilateral phase detractors, but are also capable of automatically synchronizing cardinal grammeters. Now, basically the only new principle involved is that instead of power being generated by the relative motion of conductors and fluxes, it’s produced by the modial interaction of magneto-reluctance and capacitive diractance. The original machine had a base plate of prefabulated amulite, surmounted by a malleable logarithmic casing in such a way that the two spurving bearings were in a direct line with the panametric fan. Our differentials consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzelvanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that sidefumbling is effectively prevented. The main winding is of the normal lotus o-deltoid type placed in panendermic semiboloid slots of the stator, every seventh conductor being connected by a non-reversible tremie pipe to the differential girdlespring on the ‘up’ end of the grammeters. Moreover, whenever fluorescence score motion is required, it may also be employed in conjunction with a drawn reciprocation dingle arm to reduce sinusoidal depleneration.

Reminds me of my mate (aussie slang for friend) who done his trade as a mechanic 2 years after me. Little backstory, he worked for his uncle to do his certificate, he ended up getting fired and signed off just so he would leave and not cause more damage in the shop.... yeah not a good start. Anyway years later he decides he wants to take his Ford XR8 ute onto the drag strip, 4 different sized tires, different treads, different types, hell he had a soft racing slick and an economy tire on the back. We warned him, but all I got back was "I'm not an idiot I was a mechanic just because you still are doesn't make me stupid". Well the tractors that prep the surface ran a quicker quarter mile in the end....why? Bang goes the WELDED diff. Yeah he decided lsd diff is too weak so not only did he try kill it with mismatched tires, he decided to make it into basically a ghetto locked diff. Another fun fact about him, he later almost wrote off that ute, his gfs life and his own by trying to get more horsepower from it, he changed the brakes and heard that you lose power to the friction in the brake system....so he smeared molybdenum grease all over the rotor.... Final one I'll share (I have dozens of these about him sadly). Oneday a towtruck shows up at my house, old mate jumps out the passenger side and his evo gets unloaded on my curb. It broke down he states, wants me to help him fix it. I start talking to him and ask what happened. He says it just started making horrible noises and stopped dead whilst doing some work....I ask what work, "oh just porting and polishing of all the internals". I don't know why (as this was his first ever f up I knew about) but I asked "internals? What you mean the intake and heads?" He replies as if I'm stupid "no all of it, heads, intake, coolant lines, oil galleries everything". Later he explains, as I'm still confused and getting more so as time goes on, he used sand blasting sand in everything, it was poured into the oil, into the radiator, the gearbox, the diff, into the clutch and brake reservoir then he started it, and started blowing it into the intake manifold (idk how my brain was shutting down by this point) whilst it was running flat out. He stated that's how the pros do it, they use sand to push through the heads and intake to polish it.... it took hours to show him just how fubar his evo now was. I had to help him basically replace everything, engine, transmission, diff, brakes, brake lines, clutch lines, you name it, if it carried a liquid or contained a liquid it had sand and needed replacing. He later sold the car for scrap metal, why you ask? Well the battery died, so he rewired the entire body and engine loom....with extension cords, when he replaced the battery it caught fire.....

A lot of newer stuff doesn't have an actual physical limited slip. My frontier advertised LS, but in reality it's the traction control applying a brake to force the open diff to send power to the other wheel.
@chazwick75
@chazwick75 9 ай бұрын
I've attempted to tell people that for years. It's not just the newer cars but, any car. If there is the potential of power going to a tire, the opposite tire has to be the same size. 4WD and AWD have to have the same on all 4 spots or the transaxle and diff could cause major repair bills.

On this note, make sure your tread is even, and the same left to right, front to back as well if you have AWD or 4x4. Having two different tread patterns, or two different sized tires on one axle will wreck a diff, itll do the same thing if you have two drive axles with different treads or sizes. (Having a brand new tire with an old one is included in "different sizes") you can put a a single brand new tire on safely if it isnt going on the drive axle, so if youre 2wd, its fine to do on your dead axle, but not the live axle
@muskokamike127

that applies to even regular diffs w/o the electronic gizmos. If you put different sized tires on that means the diff is constantly in motion counteracting the different rotational speeds.

This is something that isn't told to a lot of people with cars, is that if you have a donut tire and get a flat on the end of the car with the drive wheels (so, front wheel drive vs rear wheel drive), you're not supposed to just take the flat off and out the donut on because this car will freak out when it senses different wheel speeds and it can ruin your diff or transmission. So if you have a front wheel drive car and get a flat on the front, you're supposed to take one of the good wheels off the _back,_ put the donut on that, then take the good tire and replace the front one with that, essentially changing it twice. Same deal with RWD cars if you get a flat on the rear. With AWD cars (crossovers), most will be front wheel drive until they detect slippage of the front wheels, then they send power to the back, so if you get a flat and have a donut, just follow the procedure for changing a tire on a FWD car.

A few weeks back I told my mechanic that I needed new tires in the front... To then get there and have him change all four and telling me that on quattro you have to change all of them at once because of of the diff. Glad I have common sense. This is my first awd car btw and I didn't know about it. I had to take a hit tho, I have big and wide rims, it hurt my pocket a little more than anticipated.

I can tell you now, it's the fact it's a nissian rogue, I have seen countless rogues blow up this exact way even with the right tires on it, or the transmission blows up, I actually seen one where the transmission and rear dif blew up at the same time, the lady went thru a round about, and she said it felt like she hit something and the car wouldn't move anymore, there was nothing in the road that could have caused it

Same thing about awd cars. If a tire fails, it's best to replace them all with identical ones because there will be a wheel mismatch if you only replace the one.

I think part of the trouble is the “check engine“ light. There’s computers in these cars and most cars now have a display. It would be really nice if the computer would tell the driver what is going on with the car. It’s crazy, but when I was a kid we had better instrumentation than we have now.

I've been a technician for 20+ years now and if a 4wd or AWD vehicle comes in and it needs tires it needs tires. And they always get called for all 4 tires unless one is fkd and the others will be within 4/32" of the new one. If they only want to do 2 then I kick it. Not being responsible for damage like this ☝🏻because the customer can do all 4 right now. Save your money and buy all 4 at the same time

There are a lot of things that people are told about cars that I disagree with. But having the same size tires is one I agree with. These new vehicles have too many sensors that get confused when tires aren't the same size. Some are so sensitive if you replace one tire, the exact same size. The computer will sense a difference. You have to change tires in pairs or full sets. Unless you drive old cars like me. They don't care

There are a lot of people out there that do not understand what the purpose of the differential is, nor do they understand that it was invented due to the fact that wheels rotate at different intervals based on where they are at in contrast to the trajectory or direction you are traveling in.. so when a curve wheels on the outside turn more wow wheels on the inside or turning less and traveling a shorter distance while the wheels on the outside are traveling a greater distance etc… But of course they would not know that changing the size of the wheels would have an effect on this?!

Those space saver spares aren't always the same size as the other tyres & wheels on your car. Best to put the space saver on an unpowered axle, and the tyre you removed from that unpowered axle on where that flat was. That's if the flat was on a powered axle. This is especially important of note with front drive cars.

I thought it actuated to put power to the rear diff from the transfer case thus giving 4wd, not acting as a limited slip differential which would be internal to the diff. It's a electric operated clutch mechanism.
