I am a local manufacturer in Rajasthan and we are one of the major local sellers in DMart. We have seen excellent growth since last few years since we started selling in Dmart. On top of the reasons why sellers provide products at economical prices in dmart is that the payment cycle of dmart is within 7 days whereas the payment cycle of big bazaar and reliance is more then a month. It helps a lot in the raw materials chain and gives us a command on prices while acquiring raw materials as we make the payment much earlier then other manufacturers also while taking credit limit from banks we do not have to give a lot of interest.

Actually, in the last 10 years of living in South Mumbai, my family never shopped at Dmart. We shopped at a "Sahakari Bhandar" a very similar chain departmental store limited to Mumbai. Soon when Tata's star bazaar opened up nearby, it looked fancy and posh, AND had great deals and offers. So we switched over to that. After shifting to Pune recently, we discovered a Dmart in a mall ( very rare finding, according to your study) and my mother has planned fortnightly Dmart shopping days . She regrets never visiting or finding a Dmart nearby before.

Same goes for A/C they only cost about 10% more numerically but salaries Has increased 10-20 fold since. These are just 2 segments but there are so many of it I can't even list all those. Dmart is getting rich at the cost of thousands and lakhs of kiranas. Players like dmart, reliance and future will get richer and richer and there wont be equal income distribution in india. They are eating profits of small stores. Due to less capital all kiranas cant afford to take bulk orders and give discounts. There needs to be a solution to tackle this.
