Cigarettes aren’t good for us. That’s hardly news -- we’ve known about the dangers of smoking for decades. But how exactly do cigarettes harm us, and can our bodies recover if we stop? Krishna Sudhir details what happens when we smoke -- and when we quit.

I started to smoke when I was 16 and last year I've decided to quit. It's such a tough process, but so worth. Now, 24 years old and 16 months without cigarettes and alcohol and practicing exercises everyday, all I can say is: do not give up giving up bad habits. You are a winner since the moment you've decided to quit, so go ahead, champ!

@andersoncardoso1882
@andersoncardoso1882 Жыл бұрын
@@ELA._.BORATED Right after quitting is not that easy because there will be a lot of moments when the abstinence will make you wanna light a cigarette, so you need to avoid these moments as much as possible. For me, for example, used to be when I was in a party or something, during the morning after waking up, with some friends that smoke too, etc. However this feeling goes away sooner or later, and evertyhing becomes easier. So the longer you go without, the better and stronger you feel. And you will definitely feel great. Your breath, your energy, your mood, evertything will change together. Next month I will complete two years without that and I just wish I could have stopped before. Oh, and money, you save a lot of money, at least here in Brazil 'cause the straw cigarette isn't sheap and it was my favorite

For me I use to feel confident because I wasn't smoker while my friends were smokers, but the more u know about life the harder it gets to control your emotion , I have always been obsessed controlling my emotion rather than cigarette calming me down, it's a really challenge but worth try it. Soon after, he developed lung cancer and family had worried he might not live longer even doctor said he might last less than 2 or 3 years if it doesn't get better. Now that was 20 years ago, he, quit smoking right after he got out of the hospital now he's over 80 and he is the most healthiest old man in the family.

I feel so much more confident about myself about day-to-day life, and I feel free and healthier. If I could give you only one advice it would be don’t give up and find a reason to fight for. It is normal if you don’t believe in yourself for the first months, but if you are doing this for you I’m sure you will succeed. Good luck !

Just hit two months free of nicotine. The worst part was the first week or so, but after that it gets easier and I feel so much healthier as far as my lungs and heart are concerned. If you’re fighting this battle, just know it’s worth it and you’ll be so much better off without needing this crutch to get you through the day.

I've never understood the use of smoking - even when people say they use it to calm the nerves. My father has been smoking everyday since he was a teen (he's in his late 60's now) and you can't go an hour without him coughing up a storm, and spitting up tar into the sink. That's why when I read comments online from smokers playing the "yolo" excuse and "it's my body" and all that, it made me a little furious. So you want to spend your short life in pain? There is a plethora of healthier ways to cope with stress, there are plenty of chances to escape peer pressure, and there are certainly other ways live that "#coolkid" life, so please stay safe for the sake of yourself and those around you.
@SylasTheGreat
@SylasTheGreat 5 жыл бұрын
Most people smoke because it's fun not for stress. Ask your dad why he kept smoking and he'll tell you it was just part of his day. Guarantee one of his favorite activities to do while smoking was driving. There's something about smoking that is just fun to most people. It's another reason as to why some people only smoke when they're out drinking having fun. It's a terrible habit but most fun things are terrible to begin with.
@arianam6430
@arianam6430 5 жыл бұрын
@@SylasTheGreat I wouldn't necessarily say it's "fun"- but it is momentarily fulfilling. Smoking is a habit. Like in your driving example, I used to smoke on my way to work. The stress of a long hour and a half commute stuck in traffic is mitigated through smoking- the habit helps take my mind off the bad drivers around me and focus on the smoking itself. Or smoking while drinking is apart of bar culture. Kind of like how you can set up a three course meal and know dessert will be after the main course, part of bar culture is drinking a few drinks and then stepping outside for a smoke- it's all apart of a habit.
@SylasTheGreat
@SylasTheGreat 5 жыл бұрын
@@arianam6430 you're right, I think my use of "fun" is a little misleading. Like you said, it's momentary fulfilling which gives one a sense of joy and contentment. That's why I used "fun" sorry for the confusion.

Tip for smoke quitters : A day or two after stopping, go to a hot sauna, you will sweat out the nicotine in your body and it will become easier to quit.
@TheTryingDutchman
@TheTryingDutchman 2 жыл бұрын
48 hours after smoking the last cigarette all nicotine has already left the body. So your statement is incorrect. It works, sure. Not after 2 days of quiting though, but during the first 2 days.

Started at 11, stopped at 22. 27 now and couldn’t be more proud. One of the hardest things I’ve done but I’m happy now that it’s done, and that’s what you have to remember is that there is an end point. You WILL feel better after feeling bad now as that is the sacrifice. CBD no nic cigarettes and CBD vapes helped a ton, cold turkey on nic otherwise.

1 year use to seem like an impossible number to me. When I quit I joined an online forum for quitters and there was quite a few people there with 10+ years smoke free and I just couldn't imagine. July 10th will be 13 puff free years for me. It absolutely gets easier...just hold on 1 day...1 crave...at a time. You can so do this!
