I have always tried to conduct myself as follows: always be polite and respectful to everyone you meet, until it is no longer appropriate to be polite or respectful. Sometimes violence is the only language certain individuals understand, and it takes presence of mind and a measured demeanor to know how to consciously flip that switch. To that end, I am thankful that there are individuals in our society that volunteer to put themselves in that environment, so that we may never have to see the worst of society.

I, and my family are being bullied by a family of 4 next door. We cant leave and no one will help us. We feel defeated, and I have been studying stoicism, hoping to use it to get us through something that seems to have no relief or end in sight. Thank you for this message. I will try not to give up.

Absolutely i• feel for you. Thank you for reaching out to others. Another perspective may help also? Maybe TRY listening to : JOCKO WILLINK he also has a KZbin podcast and channel. He deals 'often' with decent, respectable person's being confronted with AGRESSIVE, belligerent, hooligan style persons. He is 'Somewhat' of a Stoic person. He is (was) a NAVY SEALS special tactics instructor. He prepares our best American Soldiers for the worst possible of scenarios. He has a flair for speaking with non-military persons as well. Please TRY to listen to some of his SPECIFIC to Your situation ~ videos. Shalom my friend. Hope all is well with you and your family.

For the language question, I think the stoics view of building habits, making it a daily practice applies to learning a language as well! It's better to learn and practice a little bit every day than just one intense session.

I believe the Shaolin Monks have kind of the same sentiment dealing with violent people.....last resort is to fight fire with 🔥......they would of coarse much rather love and help their fellow Man/Woman.....the Darkness comes in handy when needed.....and Im slowly learning to exept the fact that WE ALL have this Darkness within.....it is a part of US that for most of my life I have tried to avoid.....The loving Monks have revealed that its OK to be part of the TAO....US here in the West are a little slow with this understanding.......Thank you for your time and videos on Stoicism.....Stoics Rock!

Keyword: Comprehensible input. Learn a new language the same way you've learned your mother tongue. First listen a lot to simple content. You never speak with children about abstract ideas, you speak with them about surroundings. And you speak about the same or similar topics every day. Do the same for the new language. Listen the same or simple content for 30 min a day. Every day. After 6 months you will see the difference. If the alphabet is similar or easy to learn (cyrillic, greek or korean alphabets are easy to learn), then complement listening with reading immediately. Do not learn grammar at first - this is the last thing to do. Children learn the simplest grammar after 7 years of practice, do not do the opposite. When you start to read you can browse grammar to grasp the basic structures, but not more than 2% of the time. The path of the grown up learner for a similar language (romance, germanic, slavic): listen, read, speak, write, learn grammar. The path of the grown up for a distant language (chinese, japanese, arabic) should copy children's path: listen, speak, read, write, learn grammar. Do not waste time on the complex alphabet, learn to listen and speak and after 5000 known words learning to read will be easy.

As regards language, you need to accept that it is a process and that each person has its own weaknesses and strenghths to learn. That's why you shouldn't join a group to learn. You must find a teacher that follows your own pace and help you develop your own strategies. I can recommend @iadsantafe. It has a great way to change and turn your weaknesses into skills to master a language. I learned English with them. They teach Spanish and English online.

For the guy trying to learn Japanese- I assume his wife speaks Japanese. The best way to learn is to only speak to her in Japanese. Use English only when clear language is super necessary. I dated a girl from Ecuador, she was studying abroad in the states. She spoke basically no English. I managed to be able to hold full conversation around five months of daily conversation. Necessity is the best way.. maybe make a rule that only Japanese in the house should be used. You'll get it eventually

I love stoism and I enjoy Holliday's channel; however the more I listen the I realize how politically slanted Holliday is. I won't dismiss the message because I disagree with the messenger. He is virtue signaling almost everytime he speaks and that is surely not stoicism. Stoicism is action much more than political viewpoint. I would rather see a sermon than hear one.

I appreciate your videos and the truth you share with us. Thank you. Having said that, I'm going to stop following you and watching your videos, not because what I think of your sponsor, gomacro... Energy bars look like a good product, and future training app also seems legit. But is hard for me to change my life into stoicism while questioning your intentions. That's the problem with sponsorship: you sacrifice the hard earned trust of your audience for some money. Either you have a direct line to me, or not. When you push your sponsors, there are more entities in this connection than just us and stoicism. And that makes me uncomfortable. Still, I thank you. The book Meditations changed my life, and Marcus Aurelius doesn't want me to try skillshare, or brilliant, or whatever the fuck. Cheers.
