How do I get organized? - Getting rid of clutter - to live in a clean house

Getting organized can happen for you, but you have got to be willing to get rid of things that you don't love, can't use and doesn't fit in your house or on your body.
I am encouraging you on this video to really take a look at what you have. Assess it all.
How many glasses do you have in your kitchen cabinets? Do you still have
Scooby-Doo cups and your children are in college?
How many shoes do you and your family own? Is the front door a big heap
of leather, plastic and shoelaces?
Do you keep buying more and more things to KEEP YOUR STUFF IN, to try and organize your excess?
Go to any OGP (Organizationally Gifted Person's) house. THEY DON'T HAVE
STUFF!
They have what they need and love and want. When something breaks, they
get rid of it. When something is not used anymore, they get rid of it.
There really is a mental block or some kind of limitation that makes us
think that MORE is better!
Obviously it isn't or you wouldn't be here.
I talk about how I sometimes "fall off the wagon" in this video, but here is the thing. When you don't have excess, when you don't have clutter, and things get a bit out of control, things get right back in control in a flash when you regularly get rid of things and don't have CLUTTER! STUFF! JUNK! THINGS YOU DON'T NEED!!! LIFE IS BETTER!!!! YOU BECOME HAPPIER!!!!
It isn't easy at first, to live without excess, but that is only because you are practiced at KEEPING. You will become practiced at LETTING GO!
It gets easy! I promise.
This week, take 15 minutes a day and go through a cabinet, a drawer or a closet and just start releasing what you don't use, don't love, is broken or doesn't fit
Take pictures, post them on my facebook page: www.TheTidyTutor.com/facebook
Much Love,

Finally somebody that understands , the overwhelming problem of clutter. Cleaning up stuff makes me more tired than cutting wood for a half a day. Because every single item up pick up is a decision , do i keep it? if I do where do I put it ?, If I throw it away , will I need it later ? Every single items is a decision . But when i do clean up things I really like it . But keeping it that way is so hard.

Dennis it is because you have too much stuff. It all comes down to getting rid of EVERYTHING you don't love, need and use. Life will become manageable and happier ;) Thanks for the comment.

Kathy, I just finished listening to your 10 Tidy Tips. I emailed them to my family. Even though I have been reading and writing down tips for myself while on my journey to order, you have some very basic things that as I follow them it makes it all so much easier. Do it NOW! and Do the Dishes! My husband and I are using these simple rules to create more order around us. Thank you.

You're absolutely right Kathy the number one thing that I hear hoarders saying and I'm one myself is I just need to get it organized and put away I just need more cabinets a bookshelf a closet bins they could have bookcases all around their house cabinets and closets all around their house up to the ceiling but it wouldn't help because it's not about that it's a perception problem a brain perception problem like dyslexia

arosencrantz18 You know, I had a diagnosed certified going to therapy for years "hoarder" enroll in my course Tidy Tutor University and in 2 weeks her entire life was changed. In under 8 weeks she was able to drop therapy she had for years. She is the most amazing woman, living a life she never dreamed she could, having company over, and is set free from the conclusions people had of her and she thought she had to resign to, that she "couldn't" ..She could and she is :) Thanks for the comment. I appreciate you.

I had a bad childhood and I think that I always organized my meager belongings because it was the only thing in my life I could control. To this day, I enjoy dejunking and organizing. My daughter does too. Some of it may be genetic, because my dad, in spite of his shortcomings as a father, liked things orderly and put away. Getting rid of the things you do not use or like is key. Then you can clean surfaces. Thanks for the videos!

Kathy Roberts any time, it makes it more fun, think it might be funny because I relate so well haha..you actually inspired me to continue after having been decluttering so much most would say I was done, but no, found some items I could see going :) But it used to be a trainwreck here, but it's amazing, I've gone over and over everything many times, but I somehow keep finding stuff I can get rid of, maybe just that the mind is more practiced and clarity comes with less stuff, so you see more excess where you wouldn't before

You're an awsome inspiration Kathy, and when you're talking it's like you're talking about me...but my true suffer is i can't get rid of anything related to my little 3 children ,not even a small peace of paper, but i will try to work on it harder. I watch your videos all the time ,they're all very helpful so thank you.

Ghina, please listen to me. The reason you feel you can't let go of your children's things it is because you adore them so much right? This is what I want you to think of, do you love them enough to let go of their things? Because you are their teacher, they will learn what they live. Do you want them to grow up in a wreck? Having difficulties with finance (cause that comes with clutter) having difficulties with relationships (cause that comes with clutter) having difficulties with career? (Cause that comes with clutter too) I know you don't you love them so much you feel you can't let go of things that you perceive as a piece of them. Things are not who we love. Other mothers don't love their children less than you do. Mommies love their babies. Keeping things is not a validation of your love. Stuff is only stuff. Things that matter to you that they made you can take a picture of. :) Here is a video I did that might be helpful. Let me know what you think. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4TUoWmigtWjiqc

Hi Kathy i really appreciate taking my comment seriously and replying on it. I watched the video that you recommended it was very helpful, you made me realize how important is to take care of my house and every member of my little family. You are also definitely right about the reason that i don't let go of my children's stuff. Although it's emotionally very hard to let go of their stuff , but for the reasons you said, about how not doing so would effect on their lives negatively well then i have to push on my self harder. Thanks again for your help.

lol I always referred to myself as a messy poop and kind of accepted it as did everyone around me. Now I realize it is the sole reason why my life hasn't progressed in the way I want it and need it to. there's a lot more hope floating around as I pitch away at organizing my house one room at a time (i'm still in my bedroom). it's tricky as it's been a renovating project since day one (our kitchen bench top yet to be installed takes up a whole wall in my bedroom) some 8 years ago but we are focused on getting it done this year. Bad enough a mess weighing you down let alone the actual structure. Thanks again Kathy im sure you've helped thousands of people with your work, I really enjoy watching your videos and your accent cracks me up ! lol have a wonderful day - week & year! Del x

It is so hard to let go of things...even when they don't bring you any particular satisfaction. I have way too much and love thrift stores. I am trying to NOT buy things that don't fit my lifestyle or decor. I see the "regulars" at the stores and they have buggies filled with "stuff", They admit they have storage bins or storage containers filled with things they don't even use. It is an addiction and a tough one to break. I have been off and on the wagon with collecting for a very long time. I don't even enjoy my home or am afraid to get company because of the clutter. I need someone to just come over and help me get organized once and for all. What a shame that I am wasting my valuable time while suffering with "flatobia"...

Kathleen, I know it is difficult, especially when you have gotten used to it as a life style. You can change things. Ask yourself, what do you want, stuff that you don't use or love, or a happy life? It really does come down to that. You can't be happy with so much around you. It becomes an obsession. Have you considered taking my course? It has helped so many people just like you. I don't know safepathaven, I suppose our birth order and lots of other things has a reason to why we are how we are. But I sincerely believe that we are born with certain innate abilities, and order is one of them, just like music is. The good thing is we can learn music and we can learn order :)

"is an electric canopener still something to leave on the counter top?" It is your own call. If it crowds your counter top I would say no, put it in a cabinet if you have the room. If you hardly use it, then yeah, get it off the counter. If you use it a lot and it bugs you to have to get it out and put it back all the time, leave it out. Ask yourself, what gives me the most joy? What makes me most happy? Do that xoxo :)

Jules, I gotta tell ya... It will cost you more than you could ever calculate than you will make in the sale that will never happen. Give the stuff away. Say a prayer over it all before it gets hauled off. Ask God to let each item go to someone who has been praying for that very thing. Ask to receive blessings in return. It is a promise in The Bible. Set yourself free, and set yourself up to receive :) in more ways than you will ever know, and in others that you will feel immediately.Let me know how you do.

Enjoyed this. Just curious, & unrelated to cluttering [sort of] -- do think that your birth order, being "8 of 8" had anything to do with your early-on way of viewing material things and/or not having a grasp of how to keep it in balance, until Pam & Peggy's book? Just curious. I've had the opposite life path; fastidous as a child, teen & adult -- until the death of my entire family, their tidal wave of lifelong belongings came to me for 'handling' as executrix, then my own health failing badly.

I'll tell ya, you have to be sure that you have taken care of your side of the street, because any discussions will not be taken seriously. And you will get nowhere. Talk to who you live with. let them know how you feel. They don't live alone and your desires should count for something.
