one of their tv license sales people went to a friends of mine while I was there. They even said that if we didn't watch BBC iplayer or watch live tv, then we didn't need a tv license. Fair play, he was decent and told us about the form you fill in to state you don't have a license to protect you. I paid for license for one more year then cancelled it as I don't watch live tv, only KZbin and Amazon prime

Just throwing it out there, have you called the number on the letter, you might be surprised- it's automated and allows you to declare you don't need a licence and hey presto the letters stop.

@@AlanLong-h5s No they don't. I had a letter thanking me (after I declared no need for licence) and promising me that they would not contact me again for 2 years. My next letter, requesting that I contact them again to confirm that I didn't need a licence, came just 12 months later, and of course had my name on it, not 'Legal Occupier'. Best advice is to have nothing to do with them, when their letters arrive, bin them, use them as firelighters, whatever, but do not respond to them.

funny things to me is the BBC was original sponsered by the goverment as it was the number 1 way for the goverment to pass meggages onto the thepeople whicj is why it got this status given modern day tech most go their computer before the tv and if they do go to the tv even less would load up the bbc to get its world news as it the most upto date news comes from from scocial media befor most of these platforms making them obsolete but hanging on to a bi gone era when was the last time you seen a teenager pick up a news paper to read

That's when 'officialdom' close ranks and courts cease to be unbiased arbitors IOW they would be instructed to arrive at a preset conclusion regardless of facts and whoever presents them,it could possibly be successful in an international court...but I wouldn't hold my breath for that to happen,too many vested interests and much money involved+it would just be appealed endlessly until the 'right' verdict was reached.

It's amazing how a single notification (SORN) is enough for the DVLA, but TV Licensing feel the need to be constantly told that you don't need a TV licence.

I've had reminder emails about SORN? So it's pretty similar. SORN should follow the TV licence if you ask me. The assumption should be if you don't have it you don't need or want it. Prove it if you think otherwise.

10 years ago I was living in Dubai but every time I came home there was a pile of these letters waiting for me in the hallway! my GF at the time was a long established lawyer who read these and was convinced this was demanding money with menace’s! she did how ever rebuke me for not buying a TV licence as most reasonable people did, you can afford it etc etc. to which my reply was why the hell should I I live in the UAE for most of the year! She is no longer my GF!

I was unemployed several years ago due to illness and on benefits. I was unable to pay my licence fee just before Christmas. . I was fined £475, which I had to pay by instalments out of my JSA. I was threatened with six months in prison if I did not pay the court. I was forced to live on £35 a week. I have hated the BBC and their licence fee every since. They claimed that as I had a working tv set in the house the licence was mandatory.

I have not paid the licence fee for a few years... got the letters and went online to tell the BBC I don't need their services. About 3 months ago they write again, just checking I haven't changed my mind, so I ignored it. Yesterday a new letter, no phone number or any way of contacting them.... So I, reluctantly, completed the online disclosure and told them I am certain I don't need a licence... I am still under investigation so telling then is not enough... Spot on as usual, only in UK could such outfits be tolerated, where a tax is paid not to the government but to fund an outdated anti British establishment. I decided years back to stop watching and listening BBC TV and radio. I dutifully applied for and received a two year exemption’ licence but guess what after six months these threatening letters began arriving. I have occasionally written ‘not at this address’ on the front of the unopened letter with an arrow saying see over and underlining the address on the back and popped it in the nearest post box. I understand the Post Office charge the recipient of such returns.

Someone called the police at a loud party I was at years ago, complaining that no one had called the police to report the out of control party. A couple of hours later they called back to complain that the police hadn’t attended. Same here, replied with a “not needed” in 2016. We don’t get harassed with letters or visits, just resend the same every two years and if they do turn up at our door they’ll get the recommended “no thanks” response! The. "What to expect in court" letter always used to annoy me the most, especially and it was always addressed to the legal occupier for stop. How on earth can it take someone to court when they don't even know their name? Still, that investigation had been proceeding for at least a dozen years by this point, so give them a chance. A mobile phone, games console, laptops, ipads even some exercise equipment can be used to watch live TV and or BBC iplayer. Technically, anyone with a modern mobile phone has the ability to receive a television signal and watch iplayer. What confuses me is how if they get a court order and enter they can Technically claim you have receiving equipment, but unless they gain access to your property and catch you watching TV, and then prove it's live whilst filming the whole interaction and whilst not turning on your equipment and manipulating it. It seems impossible without a confession and full on handing yourself over that they can do anything. I can only assume the courts don't take anything TV licence relates seriously as well. Not paid for 6 years now, not had a visit either. Its a scam

You got it right. It’s almost impossible for them to find out if you’re watching tv without a license if you don’t confess or let them in to inspect your home. You’d have to answer the door with the tv on in the background behind you and they see it. The only thing that I don’t know for certain is if they can look in through your windows and catch you watching tv inside. Especially if you live in a house with gardens and sneak into your garden to look through the window at you watching tv inside. Nor do I know, if you live in a ground floor flat if they can walk right up to your window and look in. I have no idea how the courts would react to evidence gained by a tv lisencing goon recording you on the sofa watching tv by looking and filming through your window. But, while I’m not officially condoning this, if you simply drew the curtains to make sure nobody could look inside and never answer the door/let them in then there’s no way for them to catch you watching live tv without a license. Knowing this, I find the numbers of people taken to court and convicted of watching tv without a licence kinda astonishing, especially if the goons can’t use evidence gained by looking/recording through a window. It means that tens of thousands of people are confessing/talking themselves into a conviction when all they needed to do is keep their mouths shut.

A question. Could you not send them a letter from a solicitor telling them to stop sending you threatening letters and if they don't then you can take them to court for threatening Beauvoir and harassment? That would turn the table on them. but I think there way out of it is that the letters do not have your name on them.

30 years ago I had a knock on the door, and I invited the goon in as I didn’t have a telly and I had nothing to hide. They searched every room in the house even the bathroom and asked me to sign a form declaring I didn’t have a telly and I thought that would be the end of it. After that I had two visits a week waving my signature in my face for the next two years until I moved house. I was only 21 at the time and I found it very scary and I felt like I had done something wrong. I continue to receive these letters to this day but now I just tell them to go forth, I’ve not had a visit for ten years now. Jon’s right if you don’t engage with them they give up and leave you alone.

They don't scare me anymore ... thanks, mainly, to you but also others on YT. It goes straight in the recycling box, without even being opened. I'm just a little annoyed that they still have my personal details, despite my requesting they remove them - in writing! Hmm, maybe I should look into legal representation under GDPR? I took this up with them. The ico told me tvl are permitted by the government to keep your details even if you are not a customer....

I have been legitimately TV licence free for over 2years and do not make their "no licence needed" declaration as i dont take kindly to thier bully boy tactics. What i actually find amusing is that for over 2 years they are still "starting an investigation" into my address.! This company is an absolute joke..! I hope this channel spreads far and wide in the hope more people see them for what they are and no longer be intimidated by the letters or door to door salesman.. You can do it..! ✊😉

If U do let the goons in and they see a TV set ,,The goons will read you your criminal law rights and u will be taken too court,,The courts are breaking the law by fineing the occupier even so your TV set doesn't work or your not broadcasting or watching live TV...The judges should be thrown in jail for breaking the law,

For a TV detection van to work your TV would have to be a transmitter. Anyone with any experience with electronics know this.

The old cathode ray telly's emitted a 'carrier wave' that could be picked up when the box was turned on but it couldn't tell if you were watching Corrie or any other programmes!

I wonder about that too. If everyone knew that they could save themselves £159 a year by simply closing the curtains when they watched live tv and not answering the door to the goons/closing the door on them after they identify themselves, there was no way to be caught breaking the law… how many would choose to do it?

Nearly 20 years ago, after numerous letters and a very heated visit from an enforcement officer, which I let in after being threatened with being reported for an offence just because I wouldn't allow their "inspection"(I know, I wasn't as well informed back then) I wrote and told TV Licencing that I did not need a licence. I also told them that I had removed the implied right of access to my property and any further contact would be regarded as harassment. I have never heard from them again. None of this should be required. If I need a licence, I will get one, simple. Now I know my rights, I'm almost disappointed they don't start trying it on again!

I haven't had a license for 9 years. I just throw their letters in the bin. Haven't seen an inspector once in that time. A friend of mine once engaged with them by mail. The last letter from them demanded that he prove he didn't have TV. His response to that was. "How do I do that, take photographs of the corners of my lounge showing no TV?"

Doubt you’ll get a visit any time soon, I’ve been under investigation for 4 years and nothing, not like I live in a small village either. Now that I know about these letters it’s amusing to see them go round in cycles. Starts with making enquiries into a full on ‘investigation’, and then back to enquiries a few months later.

Shared your video's with my daughter as she only watches Netflix and a few movies on prime and was worried about the letters from TV licensing she did finally get the goon visit, As per your advice no thanks mate and shut the door not heard from them since . So thank you for putting this out their and giving people the confidence to stand up to these tyrants P.S still trying to wean the wife off live tv so i can save £159 quid a year

Im in the exaxt same situation as you. I moved in to a new house (council though) over a year ago and they keep sending me these letters but i ignore them. Its still addressed to legal occupier. Not had a visit yet. I live in the north of Scotland so even up here the BBCs corruption is strong. They stopped using red letters at least.

Been without a licence for about 4 years. I've previously declared every two years but refuse to do it anymore. I'm fully aware of the rules and don't watch any live tv and never watch BBC iplayer. There is only one programme on the BBC i would watch if i could, their output is that bad. If I'm staying in hotel I might watch something live but more than willing to forego that at home to withhold income to this disgusting broadcaster.
