The books cited - Book of Enoch - was excluded from the Canon of Scripture - rejected in the late Second Century. It was not removed from the Church’s Standard of Scripture by the Reformers - it was rejected 1300 years prior to the Reformer’s innovations of the Faith.

Which book was Jude quoting from in Jude 14-16 "Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

The Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Barnabas, and the Epistle of Barnabas, which isn’t the same as the ‘gospel’ bearing Barnabas’ name - were deemed heretical early on, or didn’t meet the criteria for inclusion into the Christian Scriptures. Therefore, these books were NOT removed by the Reformers in the 16th century. They were excluded greater than 1300 years prior to the reformation. So, do not misconstrue that these books were ever part of the Christian Canon, once it was established by either the 3rd or 4th Church Council…. I can’t recall the actual Council atm.

Some books called Apocrypha in the Old Testament contain teachings that contradict the Bible Among those books is Tobit, who tells us that an angel teaches sorcery to expel Satan by cooking whale liver on a fire, as its smoke expels Satan. Another book teaches that the end justifies the means. A woman enters the enemy’s room with the intention of adultery and then beheads him. This enemy is Nebuchadnezzar, who mistook the book and called him the king of Assyria.

You’re going to have to find a better argument against Tobit than that the miracle in Tobit has a fish liver involved. By that logic, you should also throw out Genesis because the miracle which takes place through Jacob using the speckled sticks. I’ve heard pagans call that sorcery too. But that doesn’t mean it is.

I think anyone outside of Orthodoxy, could easily say of any mysteries of the Church, as ‘sorcery’… but these people are not enlightened to the True Faith. Pagan Rome was freaked out by Christianity when it showed up in their reality - because this new and living Way - well, ‘they drink blood and ate flesh.’ Modern congregations in the Contemporary Church who are embracing this whole seeker friendly approach should learn from Church History… it doesn’t work. There were attempts to make the Faith ‘more Muslim friendly’ - and that effort caused internal problems for quite a while. This is the Church, these are her teachings and Traditions (to include the Tradition of Scripture) - either you embrace it… and live it… or you remain outside of the Church. Trust you are well. Lovingly, Cuthbert.

When one’s ecclesiology and theology is from a Restorationist construct, it becomes problematic for folks to seriously consider their Scriptures were curated and preserved by someone who one views as corrupted.

If the apocrypha were not inspired by God, how do they contain prophecies that were fulfilled in the New Testament?

I believe there’s enough in the Bible to lead you to Salvation and keep you saved, do we need more. Some people can’t do what’s in the 66 books we already have.

Hi Norman, and I still love my Protestant Bible - and I would mostly agree with your assertion about what it contains would be sufficient to bring folks to a general understanding of theology, Christology and soteriology (Nature of God, Person of Christ, and Salvation). Since converting to Orthodoxy, I have read very little of the 7 deuterocanonical books called. Apocryphal’ by Protestants. These were yanked out by the Reformers after being part of the Christian canon of Scripture for well over 1000 years. Martin Luther would have removed more books - from the New Testament - like James, Hebrews, and Revelation…. But fortunately, his efforts were thwarted - James and Hebrews are two of my favorites. Trust you are well. Lovingly, Cuthbert.

Dr Bernard mentions ‘seven books’ that were disputed (of the NT)… This was a Reformation issue NOT the Early Church issue when those revolting from Rome, led by Martin Luther - who was pushing to get rid of James, Revelation … I mean, what Oneness Pentecostal doesn’t love the Book of James?

I've recently considered Enoch and how Jude makes referance. I don't think I can agree that it's a discussion of tradition. The reason is Jude is asserting that Enoch prophesied regarding the end times and in that his prophesy is coming to pass implies he is a true prophet. However I would stand behind the exclusion of his works from scripture in that Enoch was pre flood and this is the world that God destroyed. I would consider if the teachings of that time should continue. Nevertheless the identifying of Enoch making prophesy and it coming to pass would indicate the writing to contain some truth. Additionly Judes quoting of Enoch would imply it was either scripture of the time or that perhaps Jude himself was well read in many scrolls of his time. Either way, the message of the Bible is clearly Christ and him crucified. If any man or any angel of heaven preach any other doctrine other than you have recieved, let him be cursed. The message is all about Jesus, and if we recieve Jesus in the absence of Enoch, then let Jesus be recieved.

The Church is still here alive and well my brother! Matthew 16:18 (KJV) And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

@@se9355 Jesus is the rock, not Peter. The Greek uses petros for Peter, which is a stone. Jesus said upon this Petra which is translated Rock. Which means Jesus was referring to himself as the rock not Peter.
@realmccoy1245 ай бұрын
The word Peter/rock is a play on words in both Greek and Aramaic. The true Rock, is Christ God himself… the Church Fathers in their commentary, specifically, John Chrysostom, the rock is ‘the faith of Peter’s confession’ in answering . Christ is the true Rock… and the Church is built upon the faithful confession of Christ…. Who do you say that I am? “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God…”.

The authoritative apostles did not will anything of their own, but were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write according to God's will; GOD was and is in charge, who is the Inspirer of His Holy Word to the anointed writers of these books. Jesus came for the broken and sick, and we all know that those who are broken have little time to study in-depth. We believe by FAITH, which comes by hearing biblical scripture. GOD"S WORD STANDS and is everlasting; no man can explain why God decides there are only 66 books in the Bible. Why even try to explain? I find that bible scholars sometimes do a disservice to the rest of us lower educated low-denominator Christians, as scholars tend to dissect and opinionate on every single angle of Bible construction. Today in 2024, God's Word stands true and He knows the why and how His 66 Books remain. Fine for those scholars who need to study for themselves, but I find this discussion almost takes some of the glory away from the Author and FInisher of our faith and causes unnecessary disputations.
