It helped me to ask myself a question - is it better then the last few things I bought lately? If not - I won’t buy (unless I exactly need this piece of clothing, like basic tshirt). It is kind of a selection, works for me

Three questions I ask myself before thrifting an item (because the wait-a-month method can’t be used!) 1. would i still want/love this if it was 3x the price? - This stops making “bargain” buys just because they’re cheap when realistically you won’t wear the item. 2. would i still want/love this item if it was unbranded/had no logo? - This stops hype purchasing. Obviously an item being luxury is a perk but if you don’t like the item Itself! it is pointless to buy. 3. would i still want/love this if i saw it one month ago? - Stops adherence to micro trends and helps shift the focus to whether the piece would fit in my wardrobe/style rather than get a lot of likes on social media only to end up back at a charity shop in a few weeks. Idk if this is helpful to anyone but it’s REALLY helped me !!

I think it’s also important to note that because clothes are so cheap and accessible now we aren’t really conscious shoppers and just buy things we like with a couple clicks without considering where we can wear something or what to wear with it. So when it comes to trying to put an outfit together we just have statement pieces and nothing to bring the outfit together (not to say we should buy boring clothes). I think that’s where people who like captual wardrobes are coming from at least.

My biggest advice is to keep up with laundry, dry cleaning, ironing, alterations!! I feel like at any given time, my fave clothing pieces aren’t “ready to wear” and taking care of my most worn pieces has helped me cut down on shopping.

As an avid thrifter with a closet full of secondhand finds, I used to run into the “nothing to wear” problem because I hadn’t figured out what my style was yet. It can be hard to choose what to wear when you buy clothes from the thrift store based entirely on price and fit instead of buying what you actually like. I started making thrifting rules for myself and selling the clothes that don’t fit into my aesthetics and lifestyle a few years ago, and now I can almost always find something I want to wear!

For me it helps to clear out my closet regularly, it makes me aware of what some constants are in my closet over the years and 'rediscover' old favorites and style them with newer items. I've come to the realization that if you style your 'old' faves differently, no one really notices it that much if it is or isn't new.

About a year ago, I started getting more strict about the clothes I have in my closet for each season. I live in a climate with 4 distinct seasons (and annoying transition periods, like right now), so dividing clothes up this way helps them to feel fresh each new season and I also don't have choice overload. Autumn and spring are when I have the most number of clothes in my closet (because of the annoying transitional weather), but I just swap out clothes as I need to. It's also helped me figure out what I'm actually missing and if I have any repeats or pieces I'm not wearing. Maybe everyone does this, but I never used to. Instead, I just had everything for all seasons in my closet all the time and got bored and frustrated.

I also think that moving away from communal living and clothes sharing contributes to this! If you live with friends (or a partner) you can share clothes with, the feeling of needing something new isnt there as much - plus you can see how someone else might style a piece of yours and get re-inspired!

Me too. I’m autistic, and just yesterday I stared at my closet in brain shut-off for almost 15 minutes, because I hadn’t pre-planned what I’d wear. I live where the seasons have dramatic temp changes, so I rearrange my closet and put together outfits every season. It helps so so that I don’t get overwhelmed every time I get dressed- I already know what works together. The rearrange can turn into a hours-long (hyper-focused!) project, but it’s kinda fun (for me) and saves me from panicking on a rough day.

I feel like for me when it comes to shopping and deciding between all of my options I tend to think about whether the item can integrate seamlessly into my wardrobe. So if there’s an item I’ve been wanting for a while I think whether I can see myself wearing this item with a couple other items I already own that way it’s not as impulsive. I also think it’s important to have a “uniform” in the sense, having a few go to outfits and items that you know work and you’re comfortable with. And if you want to buy new items asking yourself whether those new items can fit into your established “uniform.” That way your clothing items can serve a purpose not just as a new piece you bought on impulse because it was cheap, limited edition, trendy, etc.

omg we have the same mindset when it comes to shopping. i have a very specific design when it comes to clothes and also material!! lol. people don't understand how those items 'do not exist' and i have to find them like a treasure hunt 🤣 hence most of the time i decided not to buy anything if that garment does not meet my criteria. eventually, it makes me tired and stuck with whatever i have in my wardrobe

As a plus size shopper, I lack choices. If I find something I'm specifically looking for in my size, it's usually the less trendy version from 2010, or a poorly made fast fashion version. Thrifting is great, but even then, anything above a size 14 is so hard to find, because smaller shoppers are buying plus sized clothes in the name of wearing "oversized" clothing. I wish I had the dilemma of too many options.

Wowwwww. This was so interesting. The number one thing this made me think of is how I’ve changed with spending and purchasing clothes-mainly “loud” statement pieces- because they actually don’t MAKE the outfit. I’d always buy these statement pieces when I was younger and then get frustrated when I didn’t have the foundation pieces to go with it. It would always be too many statement pieces and not enough basics. Now I’m so much more conscious of what I buy- AND WHAT I RETURN- and I no longer keep items that I don’t LOVE

I noticed that I only feel that I have nothing to wear when I a) don't feel like the vibe that my outfits provide me with and / or b) at the end of a season, when I wore the different outfits too many times and want something new. I need to spice things up then and find new combinations.

I've been dealing with this SO much my whole life, but especially the past few months. I desperately need new sneakers because all of mine, which I've had for years, are falling apart at the same time. And I just can't decide which ones I want to buy and invest in; there are so many options. And so I've gone the past few months scrolling through depop and vinted and thredup and the adidas website and literally everywhere looking at my options and trying to find the "perfect" one, and in turn I still don't have sneakers!!

I think for me personally when I say I have nothing to wear it's because my body has recently been fluctuating and changing, on top of the normal monthly fluctuations of being bloated, etc. I have pieces that I absolutely love but don't fit and I fall into the dilemma of buying again and getting rid of my old things or holding onto it. 99% of my pieces are thrifted/ second hand so they're pieces that I love so much and it's not as easy to go out and purchase a replacement that fits.

A capsule wardrobe definitely isn’t of me bc I like a lot of variety in my style, but I also try to make sure if I’m purchasing clothes that I genuinely love them and can think of outfits to make with them-a point you’ve made in previous videos. I never had the problem of having nothing to wear, but the too many choices issue does make sense. Idk about the people who don’t take your advice tho, I feel like maybe some people are just stubborn. I’m also vocal about my love of fashion and sustainability with people I know, so a lot of family members and friends will show me clothes before they get rid of them in case I want them. So anyone who wants something different could try that.

a while ago i was depressed and my mom took me out shopping. she said she wanted to buy me a piece of clothing to cheer me up, and since she has more money than me, i know that means buying something new, a bit more expensive, whereas i normally buy secondhand. but i guess i was still really depressed, because trying to shop for something nice was so hard for me that day. every store that we went to had either nothing that i actually would like to wear or the quality was just way too terrible for me to want that piece. when i stopped eating meat, my stomach grew really sensitive to eating meat after a while- now it is the same for me with fast fashion. it does not make me feel good anymore. there is nothing wrong with rewearing outfits, but sometimes you just need a bit of a creative boost and fast fashion is as bland as can be. to my delight, ive been able to turn things around. as of this week ive bought a pile of amazing secondhand clothing from a girl in the local thrifting group chat, and im making my own crochet shrug. i used to love a capsule wardrobe and i still curate a bit (i wont buy a similar white blouse to the one i already own, ill only buy colors in my palette etc) but i havent had any regrets letting go of those rules. my parents complain that i have too much clothing already, but everything that im putting in is ethically sourced, i repair as much as i can and the things that i am giving away are to my cousin or my trans friend who really needs it. its not ending up in landfill. and even then, i have way less clothes than average. it just feels like a lot to other people because the pieces are so different and there is so many ways i style them. so thats my conclusion- in order to avoid 'having nothing to wear' you need to fuel your own creativity and stop buying only bland white tank tops and jeans from zara.

For years of me thrifting I would over consume. Any free time I had I would go thrifting, and while at the thrift, I’d tell myself “if I don’t buy it now I’ll never find something like this again” or “it’s so inexpensive, just get it” leading to my closet being saturated with items I would never wear. I would regularly clean out my closet by either giving the clothes to a loved one, donating them back, or selling them. In my mind it wouldn’t be such a big deal because at the end of the day, I’m thinking, these clothes could’ve ended up in a landfill. I don’t thrift as much anymore to practice less consumption but it’s still my first option when I feel I need to buy clothes. I also try not to buy clothes for events, which helps me to get more creative with what I already have.

I've been thrifting for a while now and I've had a phase in my style that I a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. It's because I thrift things that are not practical, not comfy enough or not really me. And it was so tempting because it looks cute and it's cheap. RIght now, I don't have a capsule wardrobe but I try to adapt a capsule wardrobe idea. I think it's okay for it not to be all or nothing 30 pieces of clothing only. I still have pretty dress that I only have 1 combo to wear. But I try to keep most of my pieces interchangeble and it's made decision making so much easier.

A lot of us get sucked into trends and seeing a pretty piece of clothing on a beautiful model. When we try it on, most likely we hate the way it looks on our body. The fit of the item is so disappointing and it feels hopeless. I bought a body on dress that looked like it hugged the body but trying it on the waist area made me look like a box. Soo it just feels like i look ridiculous and there’s nothing to wear.

Will be an adult soon and I still never know what to wear because most of my closet consists of hand me downs or clothes that my mom bought (shes to type to go shopping once in a while and come back with loads of clothes). I agree with the video, my stress comes from the fact that I have too many options to choose from. My cabinets and closet are broken now because theres too much stuff, the clothes are falling all the time because everything is so full and some are in bags or straight on the floor. Having inspo for outfits and writing them down definitly helps. That way I know what things I mostly wear and I can create outfits with stuff I barely wear.

Now that I'm back in the states with my entire wardrobe, I'm often scrambling in the morning to find an outfit I can and want to wear. Part of it is definitely a function of being a working professional rather than a student who can throw on a t shirt and jeans, but I had a carefully curated wardrobe abroad of clothes that I liked and worked for my life.

The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 22:2-13
