Today, I'll be giving you all a walkthrough on how to change the oil in a Dodge Viper! It's a pretty straight forward process as long as you have a way to raise the car up since it's so low to the ground. I'll also be talking about the specific oil that SRT recommends and why it's suited for the Viper's 8.4L V10. Enjoy!

Thanks for uploading this video, it's cool to see not only basic maintenance related to a viper, which is always a good thing, but to see the cool workspace an (what seems to be) autorized dealer has! I worked for a year and a half as a technician helper for a Chrysler dealership here in Venezuela and the diference is quite massive, specially when it comes to the variety of cars they work on. Keep up the good work dude, I really like your videos. Cheers!

Kyle, I'm surprised they had you take the filter out first. Maybe it was for them to have a good laugh. I always do drain plugs first then oil filter. Btw, I was having trouble draining the oil from my '15 Viper (last night!). My driveway is in a slope and we left it over night only to drain about 5 quarts of oil. I know the car has to be level when draining. There's a write up in the VOA Forums. Thanks for sharing the video!

It's a sad day when the oil filter location is better on a Viper than a Civic Si. I would know because I had one. Had to remove the passenger side wheel every oil change to get at it. I've got a Focus now which has a similar location to the Viper. I can get an oil change completed in about 15 minutes.

Jacob Sterkel I guess you've never done an oil change on the newer ones(2010+) that require a special tool for the oil filter housing. It's not hard, but at the same time, the Viper doesn't need a special tool for the filter, unlike the Toyota products.

Hey Kyle I noticed you are using the OEM 0W40 oil. If you go into Instagram there is a guy called SneakySnakes who also has a Gen 5 Viper who met the head developer for the Vipers V10 Dick Winkles at the Viper nationals. He said after talking to Mr Winkles that they only specked the 0w40 because it achieved better fuel economy and that when running a higher viscosity like 10W40 they saw a noticeable decrease in bearing wear. Just thought I would share that information since you have a Gen 5 as well.

Yeah I know your Viper's gone already but since you have such a complete viper experience on YT, I'm gonna add that Winkles did say use thicker oil and the Viper Clubs have started using thicker viscosity, such as 15/40. Cold oil pressure improves too.

@photilal1960

The Upscale used to be an old thing that switching caused leakage or burning oil bc the synthetics actually removed some contaminants that were preventing it. Just run a synthetic blend high mileage and you should be safe

Saabkyle04 I drain first then remove the filter. Also, make sure the engine is vented before draining as well either by pulling the dipstick or removing the fill cap. This allows the air to be displaced smoothly and no chugging occurs with the oil. Just in case you get stuck with a smaller drain pan than seen in the video. Cool vid!

Hey Kyle, that's a nice car! Pro tip: the oil bottles are designed to be poured the other way. You were pouring with the spout at the bottom. It should be done with the spout at the top during the pour.

Vipers are special cars no doubt but the dealership will take you to the cleaners. I just paid $231 for an oil change on mine and last year's price was around $150. I think I might be doing it myself next year.
