'Show me your school schedule, and I'll show you your values' -- very true, Mr. Moran!

Great talk. How?? How? How? How? How do we implement this? Give us some practical steps about what to do. How to challenge not just the school board but the parents and students who really don't care about education but just about the grade. I totally agree that school is disjointed and badly designed, but how EXACTLY should we change it?
@abdelaziztifouti2 жыл бұрын
First by changing our view of parents and students just caring about the grades. Many don't when we believe they don't and when we make the learning experience worthwhile, not just a means to an end (the grade).

I remember getting in trouble for asking questions. I got sent out of the room, isolated, yelled at and so forth. As a creative person with ADHD, the school was basically a 12-year long ride of emotional, and sometimes physical, abuse. People ask if I am going to college (since I am on a gap year) and I just wanna cry whenever they ask. Why would I want to go back to a place that made me feel worthless?

Dang, so sorry to hear that. Thats really rough and nice job getting out of that situation. This man in the video is actually the head of my school, he teaches history.

"Why would I want to go back to a place that made me feel worthless" Beautifully said. Thanks. My value rests on how far I can make others VALUABLE (or at least they feel and view themselves as such).

I now realised that I was a lot more creative and intelligent (not just academically) before I got to Grade 1. Literally, we had TEN EXAMS per year! Starting from Circle 1 and ending at Circle 10. Where the heck would we get the time to think creative?! We were always doing homework and studies. Thankfully as I grew, there were four and eventually three examinations per year but as a child, pre-school was the time I had the most amount of creativity! And Grade 1 destroyed it ALL! I'm so angry on my school! Ten exams?! Like are you kidding me? I don't know why didn't I object then. Probably because my teacher told me to 'keep quiet' and would put me in the 'bad student' list if I did something out of creativity!

This last year of COVID learning made me feel like their wasn’t enough time to teach everything I normally would. Eventually I decided the year was a wash, lets just experiment and teach even less. I wasted 5 plus minutes each class on a game. It was fun, I connected more with the students and we learned just as much.

10 cross curricular long term projects 10 deep dive seminars 10 online courses 1 (or more) internship or apprenticeship 2 ACT/SAT prep courses Is that a prescribed curriculum that focuses on college? Unsure... It looks fascinating. I would like to see a daily schedule as well.

How to make this happen - I spend most of all my waking time (and in my sleep ) about how - where to start - how to make a difference …. In the concrete world, what does this look like ? My pondering mostly always leads back to what I’ve heard about Montessori and I give up because I have no training, no funds, running out of time(I’m 53) and honestly no support ( my district has no Montessori inspired schools to transfer to)… I want to implement but I just don’t know where to start. I’ve wrote down the 3 Ps that kill creativity and will try to begin being the opposite of them. No training on how to facilitate a child centered learning environment especially 19 kids (NO TA) because as we know current classroom sizes (in NC) also contribute to this seemingly impossible pedagogy model. As you can see, pessimism is a part of my mindset now- My district has me so scheduled with non helpful, mandated professional development that supports the data processing plant, I struggle to tap into inspiration for solving this issue in my classroom. Thanks for reading/ listening.
