I was done with wet sanding the minute 3M came out with 260L finishing film. Haven't wet sanded since. P800 if it's badly orange peeled, P1200 if it's not, followed by P1500, P3000 Trizact and on to Menzerna 400 compound and Menzerna 2500 for polishing. Looks like a mirror after that. To me wet sanding is an artifact of the distant past. Eagle makes a very good dry system as well.

I DA sand and then come back with 600 and wet sand' wash the entire car down/door jams/ under the hood/trunk/wheel wells/ under body/rinse/spray directly into body seams/cracks/ oooo steel wool windows'blow and dry towel vehicle off' let sit overnight and then repeat' mask off and paint for overall paint jobs. Tape sticks better and less trash in the paint.

Yep just blow it off and you're good. I think folks think some how water soaks all the way down to the metal - not true. You can blow it off, tape it up, paint it and never have an issue. Thanks for checking it out my friend - glad it helped :)

Hey Jerry. I was talking to a couple of other body guys last weekend about e-coat. What do you do to prep it? All three of us had different answers. One guy said he hits it with 220 and then puts a sealer on it. Other dude said he sads the e-coat right off because he's found rust underneath it before. My answer was that it totally depends. 90% of the time I just scuff it with a scotchbrite pad and soap and water, sometimes I'll hit it with 400 on a da if it feels like it has a texture on it. I've also heard of people not doing anything to it other than cleaning it with wax and grease remover. I was just interested to hear what you do with it. We did some googling and opinions are all over the place.

The shops I worked at all did it the same way. Wipe it down with wax and grease remover, scuff (if it's perfect), and paint. Otherwise like you said, if you feel a texture or dust specks, you might hit it with some 400 real quick in those spots. If you go through, sure you can hit it with a light coat of primer or even sealer before paint :)

Hey Jerry, i was wet sanding my rattle can Filler Primer with a guide coat and went down to filler in a couple spots. What should I do now? Do another full coat of primer over the whole thing?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 4 ай бұрын
Yep. You don't get much thickness with rattle can primer but it is possible to get decent results. Might do a video on "All Rattle Can Repair" Let me know how it goes Dylan :)

Great video as always. What if you do go a little too deep on the body lines? Any decent options aside from a full respray?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Жыл бұрын
There's really no easy options. Maybe smear a little glazing putty on it like this stuff (Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty, 00907ES) That's why it's sort of always good to do your finish sanding by hand. That way you can be careful. Using a DA can get you in trouble quick. Using finer paper around body lines can help too :)

No block whatsoever?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Жыл бұрын
None. It's actually the best way to go. It's already straight from block sanding. You're hands won't make marks as many think. You're really not even pressing down - just letting the paper float and do the cutting :)
@GregoryPellini

Jerry you are right. It's a great feeling to see that guide coat disappear and end up like a babies bottom. The paint job is almost finished.

Hi Jerry great video. If one is sanding 2k primer, for single stage, whats the finish grit before spraying? 320,400,600? What if sanding 2k for bc/cc? Would one stop at 320?? I'm thinking once you pass 400 your almost on the course to polishing. I've even heard 180 if dry, 320 if wet sanding for paint?? Thx, have a great weekend

And it's better to use a waffle pad that away you're not getting any fingers streaks in it finger marks
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Ай бұрын
That's true but at the time I worked - there were none to use. All body guys sanded this way. Not pressing and letting the paper do the work is the key :)
