This was really fun and interesting I genuinely appreciate that you made this video. I never thought about what goes into wearing a kilt (but I guess as a woman living on the east coast of the USA, there isn't much reason for me to explore that topic). I loved learning about it! I found your videos through your brother's mention of your work. I grew up on a farm in Massachusetts, USA, but we didn't have cows; I like his educational take on his work with the animals and the farm-owners. I also love your choice of topics, your approach, and your presentation. I often feel like I'm on a really great walking tour with someone who loves his work. Thank you so much for sharing "your" Scotland with us! Oh and BTW, I LOVE all the art on the wall behind you, but I especially like the kitty! Thanks again for all the great subjects.

This was a cool video to watch. The origins of cultural fashion choices is a great avenue for historical exploration. As for the added inconvenience of the process - the more people go out in their pajamas, the more appreciation I have, not only for people who still choose to dress well today, but also our ancestors, who took the time and effort to don proper informal wear every day.

At our wedding we had the men in kilts and our Master of Ceremonies bragged about how he had Scottish heritage, his own kilt which he wore all the time, blah, blah, blah. The man is 6 foot-four inch and broad chested and he turned up in a beautiful red tartan kilt, unfortunately it was a mini kilt! 😂🤣 There were more pics taken of him then anything else at the wedding. Excellent video. Topics to cover: how much does a kilt cost? Are kilts ONLY worn on special occasions (i.e. weddings, funerals, parties, etc.) If you are overweight, can you get one fitted to your size? How many years has the kilt been around in Scotland? Are the Scottish the ONLY culture where men wear such a thing? Is it acceptable for men to wear kilts _on a regular basis_ in Scotland meaning: going to work, going to school, going to the dentist, going to the doctor, going to a club, etc. If people visiting Scotland (men of course), walk around wearing the kilt: would the locals think he is ignorant, dumb, foolish or "honoring" Scottish culture? The last question I ask because I have a cousin whose biological father is mix of Native/Aboriginal and Scottish ancestry (among other things) and my cousin has taken it upon himself to wear his kilt (I don't know where he purchased it) EVERYWHERE. He doesn't even bother with pants. He is 1/32 Scottish (if at all SMDH!!!). He doesn't even realize some people laugh at him behind his back.
@pjk1714 Жыл бұрын
Kilts can be made by hand for any size. You purchase labour and amount of fabric. The pattern represents your clan. You can look up your tartan by last name.
@scotlandunplugged Жыл бұрын
Ooft! That’s a lot of questions Ms Choy 😂😂😂: Challenge accepted… about £500 for a kilt, but it varies. Maybe another 500 for tte rest of the outfit. They’re mostly worn on special occasions (weddings, sporting events, parties, sometimes funerals) unless you’re a tour guide, like Andy the Highlander or The Tartan Viking. You get the kilt made to measure so as long as you don’t change weight too much it’s not a problem! 😂 The kilt goes back about 400 years and the feileadh beag (the one I have) about 300 years. There are Irish, Welsh and Cornish kilts too, though they’re more of an offshoot and don’t go back far. It would be acceptable to wear it every day but very unusual! 🙂 If you wore it every day people would probably assume you were a tour guide or on your way to a special occasion. I wandered around Edinburgh in mine the other day and felt pretty inconspicuous (apart from the fact I was talking to a camera!) 😂 Video on the history of the kilt coming in the next couple of days! 🙂

If a Palawa man 1/ 32 or 64th, can give me pride in the land that we share. Why can't a 1/4th Scott, share in the pride of our origins. When my wife speaks Gallic to a touring Gallic speaking Scottish comedian, my heart swells with pride.

Ofc the Scots aren't the only culture where men wear a kilt like garment. The Pacific Islands for example, where everyone wears a lavalava(Samoan) or the local equivalent(the Fijian police wear uniform lavalavas). So, you must wear it quite often then. 😅😂 Are the colours of a specific clan, or just a colours combination you liked? So, the modern kilt is actually not a wrap-around piece of cloth like the great kilt was, I didn't know that.🤔 I remember getting a "kilt" from my mother when I was a little girl (thkse thing's are sold all over the world these days). I was over the moon until I discovered the length was more like a mini skirt. I was so disappointed I have never worn it after fitting. Now I'm searching for a not too brightly coloured tartan skirt something more like the dress length the women used to have, as I am more of a long skirt(below the knee) person anyway. (At least I'm told women had some similar kind of tartan garment?) And preferably in wool, so it'll be nice and warm in winter.😊

Don't worry, you don't look 15 years out of shape! ;) If anything, it's been 15 years [16 now I guess] and you can still wear it, which is awesome. Whiskey be damned! I've actually always been curious how kilts were...built? The waist buckles [belts?] totally make sense now that I see it. When I had to wear skirts, it was always zippers. Belts seem more comfortable, and also more forgiving. Obviously, I knew kilts would not have zippers [traditionally], and I know how dresses and skirts were made pre-zipper, but seeing it in action really helps. If that makes sense. But who wants to have a new kilt tailored every year with changing body shape?? And who wants their kilt to be a corset? I know I don't. But I also don't have a kilt and I'm also a lady so I wouldn't get one. Wait...is it weird that I'd rather wear a kilt than a skirt? Skirts are lame, kilts are awesome. But what makes them different in reality? Existential crisis. Not throwing shade on corsets, though...I love wearing them and looking at them. But I don't want them to end in a skirt. Or a kilt. I just want them to end at my hips. [Is that how you use the phrase "throwing shade?" I always thought my parents were weird for not understanding our vernacular when I was a kid, but it seems like kids these days have so much more slang. Thanks, internet.] Also, I'm going to take the liberty of assuming Graeme has a kilt also. Please make him wear it. :I I think it would be slightly weird and hilarious. Probably also attractive. Cause like. Look at you. And you're brothers. Platonic recognition of attractiveness! P.S. Sorry for this string-of-consciousness comment. I hope it's not too weird! Okay bye!
