It actually did change gaming drastically. It’s hard to see that now because so many games use its formula, but when you understand how simplistic action games were before this, and this formula was brand new. Far Cry 3 didn’t have many things that it did first, all the factors of the game had already been done before. But Far Cry 3 was the first to bring all those factors into the same game. This game was released at the height of the global World of Warcraft phenomenon, and this was around the time that developers realized casual players could understand and enjoy much more complicated mechanics in their action games than had been done before. Far Cry 3 took a chance and adopted a lot of light RPG mechanics into their game with the ability tree and weapon modification. This was at a time when the extent of character progression in an action game was finding the good weapons. When FC3 was brand new, we all wondered where they were going to take this formula, imagining what else they could add, will there be a faction system? Will there be more differences with day and night? Maybe they’ll add changing seasons as you go through the story? Will they make outpost attacks where you risk losing it back to the enemy? How far will they go with dynamic NPC battles in the world? Unfortunately, very little complexity has been added since Far Cry 3. Tons of developers just copied this formula and put it in a different setting with little to no evolution on it. Ubisoft themselves did very little to add to this formula, and if you look at their games after FC3, they chose to rely on adding in cheap gimmicks to the same formula rather than making the formula more elaborate or complex. By the time we got to FC5, we had the same game as FC3 but with drug zombies and a notoriety system that resulted only in annoying forced missions. FC6 had abilities tied to equipment which even further restricted and limited the player.

I finished Far Cry 3, but barely. I almost quit and just uninstalled it two or three times. There are so many things I didn't like about that it's hard to know where to start. - Vaas is first and foremost just a drama queen that endlessly rants at you in cutscenes without ever having anything interesting to say. The Jackal had some of that energy in his cutscenes as well, but it wasn't quite as over-the-top yet and he at least had an interesting angle on the whole situation. Story was not a strong point of FC2 either, but I felt that there were some interesting characters that actually expressed what their take on the situation was. Kouassi and Gakumba and their mercenary advisors come to mind first and foremeost. With FC3's characters I too often got the feeling that I had a weird clown in front of me that was just trying to hold my attention with whatever weird antics the writers had decided on that time. - The wildlife is important in FC3 when it was mostly part of the scenery in FC2. But the animals are short-sighted and otherwise psychotic. Not exactly good AI and I could not suspend disbelief about how they were behaving either. These are just basic animals, not weirdly mutated creatues in a strangely altered Zone like in Stalker. Having to murder dozens of them and rip off random bits to be able to upgrade anything didn't endear me to them either. - A lot of what FC2 did do very well was just worse here. Worse physics, worse fire, nature looked and felt like plastic, people ran around in red and blue shirts, the weather system and day-and-night-cycle were simplified and had little impact and stealth was just another gamified system. - AI perception, behaviour and chatter were all clearly worse. They don't perceive most sounds anymore, chatter has little variety and responsive behaviour was comparatively simple. - From what I remember there indeed was a little more verticality overall, but there was also "You are leaving the mission area" and weird little side missions that want the player to do things in a very specific way and just fail the mission if you don't play ball. FC3 has a very, very weird attitude towards player freedom. - More freedom for equipping and customizing guns, but restrictive in terms of ressource gathering. Free fast travel, but locks you into missions and often forces certain approaches. Even the alarm system pretty much forces you into playing stealthily on higher difficulties. FC2 was restrictive in its own way as well, but it was a system that was designed to be what it was. With FC3 a lot of design decisions seem to be more about not inconveniencing the player, but it's implemented in a pretty haphazard manner and it seems they only listened to feedback of players that didn't like FC2, but then just ran afoul of different pitfalls instead. - FC2's soundtrack was unique and it did fit the setting and - in my opinion - did enhance the atmosphere. FC3's on the other hand is perhaps the only soundtrack ever that I just had to turn off after some missions. - The gunplay was fine. Overall the guns sounded better whereas with FC2 there were some weak sounding ones. But simply being able to customize everything negates any meaningful choice and leaves everything at the player's fingertips. But with a unique twist where the player is forced to shoot lots of animals in an uninteresting, one-sided manner to obtain the needed crafting materials. FC2 was simple. It only cares about diamonds and nothing else. If you don't want to, you don't have bother with the suitcases either as the main missions always give multiple times the diamonds that any suitcase will ever contain. FC3 does have some things that seemed like improvements, but I never felt they took the FC2 that people loved and tried to improve on the things that didn't work. Instead they just made a game with a completely different design philosophy that just happens to have some of those "improvements" that some people had been clamoring for. It's not really a follow-up to FC2 and instead the first game of what one might call the Far Cry 3 series of games. Sorry for the overly long rant. It's just one of those topics.
@Gloops01Ай бұрын
FC3 has a weird bipolar tone. On the one one hand it covers themes of murder, human trafficking, male r*pe (hinted at), someone being burned alive in a box etc., then on the other it has exaggerated cartoon characters (and general design aesthetic) and Jason can take time out to indulge in arcady mini-games, like racing or 'Trials of the Rakyat'. The first game was a tongue in cheek, over the top '80s action movie parody, with an Island of Doctor Moreau inspired plot. The second instalment had a more serious tone, with its Heart of Darkness theme. FC3 doesn't know what it is. I preferred the characters in FC2. They all talk 19 to the dozen for some reason, but they're a lot more subtly written. Hector Voorhees is a great character, 'china'. The regular mercs had better chatter too - they have some quite funny dialogue, while the FC3 pirates have about 3 lines on repeat. FC3 has odd game play decisions as well. It's an open world sandbox, but the devs really liked their stealth mechanic, because the player is more or less forced into it. All the side missions want you to stab a pirate up close, and you get extra XP for taking outposts stealthily. Then there's the 'Heavies', who are impervious to everything apart from explosives and stealth kills (provided you have the perk). Bad luck if you didn't bring a rocket launcher along, because you'll be shooting them all day. FC2 gave the player a selection of tools and allowed them to complete missions any way they liked - guns blazing, stealth or blow everything up.

The game was originally supposed to be a bit different, instead Jason was supposed to have and save only two friends, Vince (who is not utilized in final game) and Nikki who became Liza in final game, Vaas was supposed to be just a regular pirate with Hoyt being the main antagonist They also planned for Willis to be involved since the start of the game and Jason was supposed to be much tougher, Dennis looked completely different and such, a lot of interesting changes that make you wonder how the game would be received if they didn't change all that Also you mentioned how in the "Join Citra" ending of the game they didn't even bother making a nude model for Jason, there are in fact references to such model existing in game files, but the actual model got removed, there are some text mentions but there's also some textures iirc The Coop mode featured it's own storyline where you get to play as 4 different characters with all it's events taking place before the main storyline, it was a buggy mess but really enjoyable when it worked

This is possibly one of the most generic games I’ve ever played and I will say it is more generic then Call of Duty, I can’t think of a single moment in Far Cry 3 that wasn’t a cliché. The gameplay loop got boring real fast you liberate safehouses, climb towers, loot a bit, complete a story mission, sell your crap, buy stuff, rinse and repeat. People love to rag on Far Cry 2 but at least that tried to do something different and the features in that game could of been expanded on and improved but they went down the ultra safe route and well…it is what is. Far Cry is a game you play until something decent comes out (until Ubisoft inevitably ruined the franchise)
@borangedunn6 ай бұрын
By modern standards yes, this game is incredibly generic and "safe", as you put it. But this was the first game to successfully put all of these things together in one package, and was so successful that other companies, and Ubisoft themselves, just copied the formula so much until it became so generic. Most of the features of this game came about because they were trying to expand and improve on what they had done in Far Cry 2. They weren't "playing it safe" with FC3 because there was no "safe" format for open world shooters before this game came out, they were still experimenting and figuring out what works.
@aavv45546 ай бұрын
@@borangedunn I respectfully disagree, they did play it safe by making the game more mainstream by having the cliched and contrived gameplay/story moments seen in many games up until point and I don’t see how many of Fc3s features came around because they expanded and improved on Fc2. Maybe Fc3 was the first game to “successfully” do the things it does but doesn’t change that the game is a bit rubbish, when I first played it back then I thought it was alright then I just put it on the shelf and played something else, playing back recently made me realise why I stopped playing it. I remember when Ubisoft tried to do something different with their games and I doubt Far Cry 3 existed to be different It was there to pay the bills and it worked and I think this was the start of Ubisofts downfall into a typical triple a studio. (Tbh if we didn’t have Fc3 we wouldn’t have blood dragon so I suppose that’s a good thing)
@borangedunn6 ай бұрын
If you mean they "played it safe" from a narrative perspective, then I think there might be a good argument to make there. The story was pretty basic and had been done before, and there were no real twists or turns to experience. And I would certainly agree that this marked a turn for Ubisoft moving forward. Many of their games after this borrowed or outright copied several elements from FC3, to the point where in FC5 they made fun of themselves for doing so. At several points in the video I make comparisons between features and mechanics from FC2 and 3, and when you look at reviews of Far Cry 2 from the time it seems fairly obvious to me that many of the features in Far Cry 3 come from improving on things they had implemented into FC2. Many people complained about the respawning enemy bases in 2, so 3 keeps them permanently cleared. People moaned about everyone in the world trying to kill you in 2, so 3 added non-hostile NPCs. I could go on but I already made an overly long video talking about that stuff. Like you say, none of these things were exactly new, but even if it wasn't the very first game to do all of these things at once, it was certainly the first time the majority of people saw them all together. Just to be clear, I'm not trying to convince you that you should like this game, or that you're wrong for not liking it. No one likes every game, and I'd have to be an even bigger arsehole than I already am to tell someone that their opinion is wrong. Except people who like Assassin's Creed Unity, obviously.

Do you consider games like Spec Ops: The Line generic and kitsch because of the "cliche" game-play loop and external narrative; much akin to a GOW game?
