I totally agree. There is no magical trick to reading a lot: One must simply prioritize the act.

People have often asked me how I read so much too, they seem to think I read fast, but I don't. Similarly to you I just dedicate time, it's nothing to do with being a speedy reader. I liked hearing about your reading life!

I totally agree about switching up the types of books you read. My brain works in a similar way that I find it difficult to read the same genre of book as my previous read. Switching things up with graphic novels or poetry is such a huge help. Thanks for sharing a little bit about how your reading process works!

Making it a priority is the best way & it applies to any hobby or goal. Booktube watching breaks, audiobooks with errands/chores are great too. Variety & page goal targets help my concentration: "I need to focus on this now, for this long." Cool vid! Have a great evening!

Coming off social media (excluding the wonderful bookstagram!), and not watching mindless tv has really increased the amount I read. I read 56 books in total last year, this year I'm already at 49.

I've definitely not been dedicating as much time to reading recently, and you're definitely inspiring me to do that. I'm also quite a slow reader. I also like having a mix of books on the go for sure 👍🏻 great video!

Some people really like having a set time set aside to read, which doesn't work for me, but that can be helpful to kick start having some more time to read. :)

I often read while watching TV lol. But my reading "addiction" as some have called it is as you said due to dedicating time to my books either sitting and reading or listening to an audio while driving or working on stuff.

I'm a casual reader. I try and read a chapter a day or 10 pages. I struggle to read for more than an hour my mind starts to wander. This way I can get through a book in a couple of weeks. I like short books around 200 to 300 pages. I like to have 2 books on the go at the same time.
@YourTrueShelf6 жыл бұрын
This was really helpful. I'm enjoying my current non fiction book, but I'm slow at it, as I need to really concentrate. Mixing it with another book & alternating a few chapters is a great tip, as I think it'll spur me on to read both & won't be so hard if I'm tires etc. I don't have time for tv any more either, maybe about 1 hour a week.
@SophieIslington6 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good plan, I hope that it works out for you! God, I watch so little TV

Haha I loved this video! I'm the same, my husband reads way faster than me but will read less then me per year cause I dedicate most of my free time to reading. Sometimes it annoys me too that he can read a book in half the time would take me! But yeah, reading takes much more of a priority for me than any other hobby/leisure time activity 😊
@SophieIslington6 жыл бұрын

I don't mind not reading quickly, you get to bask in the book and enjoy it more. Definitely agree about reading multiple books. If I get bored of one I just switch to another and that way I don't really have huge slumps. Usually find myself just going back to the first book after the break.
@SophieIslington6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I don't mind too much either, sometimes I like having a book over a long period of time can be really satifsying.

Priority is key! I completely agree with all of this, especially the reading more than one book at a time and just spending the time on reading. Another thing that I like to do is combing formats; like audio for knitting, e-books for unexpected lulls of waiting time, etc.

It's interesting because I find that I'm the opposite with some of this stuff. Personally I find trying to read more than one book at once is detrimental, because I tend to favour one book over the other and lose interest in the other one. Plus I find it frustrating that it slows down the overall time for finishing them both. I also find that I tend to find non-fiction a lot easier and quicker than fiction. Fiction tends to have to spend a lot of time introducing characters and settings and so on, so often the start of a novel can be the most hard-going part, but non-fiction often doesn't have to do this if it's relating to real-life things we're familiar with, and so I find it quicker to get into. My main tip is that people often overestimate how long it takes to read a set amount of pages. Until recently I never thought I had time to read in the mornings, but I've found that I can get maybe 10 or 20 pages in before I leave the house. Over a week that makes a huge difference. People think it takes ages to read a book because they maybe squeeze in half an hour or so a day on the way to work or at lunch and get about 20 pages in during that time. That's also not long enough to 'settle in' to reading (especially if you're on a noisy tube or train). Once you're more than about 30 minutes in, I find your reading speed picks up. It seems to me that few people sit down in a quiet home space and read for a significant amount of time. Final pro tip: the morning can be the best time to read, when your brain is fresh and can take more in, as opposed to late at night when you're tired. I had to train myself to just stop when I'm feeling sleepy as I end up struggling to remember what I read the next day.
@SophieIslington6 жыл бұрын
That is really interesting, I can find that two fat books frustrate me endlessly, I think the bigger the book the more I need to force myself to focus on that book alone. See for me I think the density of the NF text is what slows me down, though I can see that the need to 'build worlds' for some fiction could be slower, depending on how your brain works. That's a cool thip about morning reading, I am definitely a 'in one go' long stint type of reader rather than picking things up and putting them down.
@mufcrulz6 жыл бұрын
It definitely depends on what you read. Certain nonfiction can take weeks to get through. I read mostly dense political stuff (with high page counts) so I probably average 3 books per month.

I'm a particularly slow reader compared to most people. Partly that has to do with the fact that I read mainly in English, which is not my mother tongue. But also my brain just functions in a way that it can only process what I'm reading at a certain pace. But the whole 'how fast and how many books do you read'-thing also in a way makes me think of the video that Lauren made about dress-sizes. Strange comparison maybe, haha, but the similarity is that the numbers don't tell that much. No matter if I read a children's picture book, or a literary fiction novel of 700 pages, they both count as one book. But I also do set reading goals (number of books, but also like you a certain number of pages before doing something else), because it simply motivates to read more. Only when I get stressed about it, I try to remind myself how relative the numbers are. Reading multiple books at the same time also really helped me to read more! And I prefer to read NF in the morning, shorter texts in between other things during the day, and novels at night. I also barely watch television, of which I think a lot of people underestimate how much difference that makes!
@SophieIslington6 жыл бұрын
Oh god yes, it doesn't matter how much you read really, but I think people who don't read often see those who read a lot of a lot and wonder what the magic is? I'm a bit of a stats nerd, I really enjoy looking at the what and when. I like that you have genre reading through the day, that's really interesting.

"So I've read 57 books so far this year" WHAT "and I aim to read 194" WHAT WHAT jokes aside good video, and real answer, bet a lot of people expected the typical "TOP 10 TRICKS TO READ A BOOK A DAY" video that basically changes the whole definition of reading, also read more than one thing at once, usually a novel, a collection of short stories and some poetry; so whenever a book gets tiresome I can refuel my love for it while still reading

Yes the main thing is to devote a lot of time to reading I used to skim read in the 1970s but found it very unsatisfying I now read pretty much every word of a book and will often reread paragraphs and whole pages if I find Ive been distracted while reading . . I'm thinking of trying a month where I try to maximise my reading time to see how many books I read that month . I could start this month as theres still 22 days to go

I mostly Read in the mornings while I am having my Coffee and I Read in the evenings. I am not a Speed Reader. I take my time in Reading my Books. I do watch some TV but not as much during the summer time. I take time out every night when the weather is nice to go out walking 2 to 3 hours while it is daylight. I love to walk. It’s my favorite exercise to do. Do you buy your books or do you use a Library? Happy Reading 🔰📚📖❤️

Portal in the Pages - I use my local library and Ialso use a Library that is like 10 Minutes away from me. My Town has a brand new Library and they are finishing up the insides of the Library. It has a Gas Fireplace in it and Stone Pillars throughout with lights on each Pillar. It has a Separate Child’s Room which is nice and big. It has a Enclosed Teen Room which is big and than the Adult Section. It is so pretty - Inside and outside both. It has big circulation desk that is half round and it has lots of drawers in it. I cannot wait til my Town’s New Library opens up. My Library also is transferring over to the Evergreen Library System which all of the Libraries In my State Belongs to - most of them. It is a way for small town Libraries to get books from other Libraries in my State. You have to use the Evergreen Library Card In order to check out Books and everything is done online except for checking out your Books. You can keep your Books for three weeks and you can check out up to 100 Books at one time. They are going to transfer over to the Evergreen Library System before they move over to the New Library. I am getting so very excited. I will be able to walk to the New Library once it opens up as long as the weather is nice. I am glad that you use your Library - good for you. How long can you keep your Books and how many can you check out at one time? Happy Reading 📚📖🔰❤️

I’m glad I’m not the only person who sets page goals. I try and read 100 pages a day and I’m always checking how many pages left in a chapter. I wish I could just shut off the tv but I have to have it on in the background while I read, I don’t know why. Weird I guess lol

I am always surprised how people don't understand the simple thing of dedication to reading as a source for the amount how much we read. I do watch a lot of movies but I noticed that exchanging that time for books isn't working well for me. I also noticed that there is a limit of how fast I can consume stories in books before getting them mixed. I personally cannot read all day, I need breaks and do other things. There are of course exceptions but usually I probably read an hour or two on average a day and the same time listening to audiobooks.

I just read what I want, when I want, & have no qualms about abandoning books or reading multiple books at a time. I don’t understand why you all count how many books you read, have page goals, or oppose reading to Netflix. This community (which I love) is beginning to come off as a bit purist.
@SophieIslington6 жыл бұрын
I think it's just because we enjoy it. Personally, as I can't speak for anyone else, I'm a bit of a stats nerd and love to see patterns in the data of what I am reading and try to figure out which books affect me. Page goals, books read and loads of other information is one of the aspects of reading that I love. Again, for me personally, books are more fun than netflix or film. It doesn't mean I can't enjoy the other things, but I don't enjoy them as much.
