G'day, Yay Team ! You want an explanation, an Explanification even ? Try this....; When measuring the Aerodynamic Drag produced by any (repeat ANY) Shape moving through Air, between 1/4 & 1/3 of the Drag is caused by "pushing the Air out of the way" with the Leading-Edge ; while most of the rest is generated by, "trying to unstick the Air from the Trailing-Edge"... So, Aerodynamically speaking, as the Un-Spun Projectile emerges from the Muzzle there is at least twice as much Drag being generated behind the Centre of Gravity/Mass as tyere in front of it, and the Projectile's Long-Axis is perfectly aligned with the Direction of Flight...; therefore, thus, and because, the absolute Geometrical Symetry of the Projectile, plus the "Trailing-Edge Effect" together means that until it hits something - there is NOTHING to Peturb the Projectile, or otherwise divert it from flying in perfect alignment with the Slipstream...(!). Disclaimer... Ooh, Ah, you got me...; yes, I am indeed a Retired Low-Speed Aerodynamics-Consultant, and yes this is about 1,500 Ft/Second faster than what I'm actually qualified to speak about with perfect ("...someone will die if you disregard my Command !", type of) confidence ; but I'm pretty sure this Principle works on both sides of the "Sound-Barrier", and Aerodynamiclly the "Barbell" is effectively not much more than a simple Elongated-Sphere - with the Flat-Faces only enhancing the Trailing-Edge Effect, and thus making it even more stable, regardless of Spin. The rifling gives the larger heavy slugs a right hand spin, this spin creates a magnus effect, thus causing the rounds ro slide to the right, since this is how you sighted it in, when you switched to the smooth bore you lost that magnus effect, hence the rounds moving low and left. Since the spin causes the magnus effect pulling the rounds high and right the compensation in the scope on the smooth bore causes you to shoot low and left. At 50 yards expect about one MOA down and left for a smooth bore perfect shot. No need to adjust the scope, just adjust your expectations a bit. And I love those slugs.

The bar in the barbell creates a low pressure area which act like an 360 degree fin. Air drag pulls this fin vacuum towards the rear, creating a tail fin. Just like the Diablo...

My guess is the symmetry of the dumbbell shape makes it so that as the air flows over and around the front, it deflects off the rear of the dumbbell in an relatively equal cone, which acts as pitch control, since any pitch up or down of the nose of the slug creates an equal but opposite force on the the tail of the round, keeping it flying straight.

0:50 they are hydrodynamic, the gaps and spacing causes a control turbulence along the body of the projectile acting as a gaseous ball barring aiding in dynamic stability and hydrodynamic efficiency (sub-sonic). The waist and gaps in the head and foot are still important at sonic speeds the ball barring effect plays less of an importance but still has a critical impact on the overall dynamics when crossing the sonic threshold breaking up the body of the projectile to a uneven surface causes the shock wave to have less of a hold on the body reducing overall drag. In all, an efficient impact energy transfer to target. I suspect the only way to increase efficiency more likely @sub-sonic is to shallow cup both ends (might have a nice effect on impact also). I think I left a comment just like this on the guys channel that made these lol. Love the channel keep it up.

The gap in the middle could act as an area for it to auto correct by way of the back big flat surface acting as an effective spot for air to fall upon, and push in the opposite direction of the slant. The angle lets the air leave easier, and new air to be introduced into the system. For example, if the front slopes down, the head would block the air from flowing past to hit the bottom of the back, but the top part moving down also allows air to flow past and hit the top of the back. This could make it correct until the little rings stop air from flying into the middle when it is in a direct course by way of deflecting air up, and away from the middle. I am talking out of my rear end, but that is what I suspect.

TAOFLEDERMAUS I don't think he's far off from it, I get the feeling that a pocket is being created between the front and back sections of the slug creating a pressure pocket of aerodynamics (the technical term escapes me at the moment). The same principle is used on sports cars that use a rear wing; the aerodynamic downforce is manipulated so that the front and the rear of the vehicle are forced downward by the wind resistamce providing better handling through equal grip on all tires vs just the front of the rear wrong was absent. For the slug however, nstead of one plane being acted on the slug is having all 360 degrees pushed on by wind resistance and theoretically self-centering. I also believe this is a large part of what makes the Diablo shape work as well as it does for pellets and slugs.

IMO the dumb bell shape has the same effect as the diabolo pellets...both have a pinched waist or wasp waist which is what gives them stability just the dumb bell has a skinnier waist causing more drag maybe giving better stability then the diabolo. A comparison of both recording muzzle velocity and velocity at 100 yards would show which produced more drag

I think, like the diablo, the shape forces it straight because the rear end catches the pressure wave creating drag, while the front is pushing though that pressure wave. An test that might illustrate if this is the case or not is to take these shapes and shot them at sub-sonic speeds and see if they are still stable.

You should try researching the aerodynamics of "spool rockets". They are model rockets with a shape similar to your dumbbell slug. I found a quote on the aerodynamics of the shape but I can't find the source the quote is referencing. "Various aerodynamic texts confirm the fact that the dynamic Center-of-Pressure (CP) of flat plate lying perpendicular to a flow, lies behind the plate along its central axis, due to a base vortex that forms when the air begins flowing over its surface. Published data shows the CP for a flat plate in a perpendicular flow is about 2.2 diameters behind the plate along the axis perpendicular to the face of the plate through its center"

My quess for why they fly straight is , that there is 2 separate pressure waves forming on that projectile. one on front and one on rear. the rear one works a bit like an parashute and stabilizes the flight that way. It was seen on first shot on copper ingot . projectile went so close to table surface that pressure wave hit the table and destabilized the projectile just before it hit on copper ingot .

Three things that we need to consider. Compression lift is being applied equally, 360º around the CoG of the object. The object is absolutely symmetrical on 2 axis. Traveling at around 1.4 mach, it has a smooth and close to symmetric area rule. Im curious to know if ANY object will fly straight, regardless of its shape, if it meets these 3 characteristics. Someone should try different shapes which do meet them.

Oh, and they fly straight for the same reason pellets do - the back half acts like a bomb tail, every time the shell starts turning vertical or sideways the tail comes from behind the head and encounters immense air drag, forcing it back into order. Any shape that has a head, a thinner section and a wider (somewhat aerodynamic, starting flat or concave won't work as well) tail will act like that.

Nice video, Jeff and Danny! The concept of dumbbell slug is originates form French Blondeau slug. The principle of stabilization is controlled oscillation. They do not fly straight. They do like a spiral flight, but this spiral is tight enough to hit even small target (just like Danny showed us). Interesting and useful feature - 90-degree front edge will allow these to cut through bushes without deflection.

I don't have a degree yet, but from my understanding of projectiles, two things are needed for stable flight: 1) A forward center of mass, and 2) Drag on the back. The Diabolo shape with the hollow cavity in the back is a perfect example. It has most of the mass in the nose and the cone shape in the back creates drag (because drag is a function of cross-sectional area and velocity) behind the center of mass which creates stability. This dumb-bell design is comparatively similar to the Diabolo shape. Even though the nose and tail have the same mass, since the projectile has a small cross-section in the center that widens out in the back, the drag created keeps it stable. This type of design can be seen with many of the great performing projectiles you have tested.

imho: the part of the dumb bell that leads, crates a pressure wave such that, the following dumb bell tends to follow the path of least resistance which is into the leading dumb bell's negative pressure area. Additionally, the leading pressure wave may collapse near enough to the following dumb bell such that is cannot tumble into a high pressure area - the entire unit must travel in one direction in that it is one unit propelled into the same direction. I think the collapsing area of the pressure wave probably tends to act on the following dumb bell in a way preventing tumble. Thanks for the video.

J Crumrine the flash is most likely caused by the metals having a fine layer of oxidation on them, and when impact is made the force and heat cause the oxides to burn off causing the flash as they do.

I think they fly straight because of basically Bernoulli’s principle. When the slug flies through the air, the air speed relative to the slug is very fast, this causes a vacuum to form in the grip part of the dumbbell. When the dumbbell tweaks over ever so slightly, the side whose back is now hanging out is no longer a vacuum because the air is being forced into it. This causes a pressure differential since the opposite side is still a vacuum, and it’s this pressure differential that exerts the force required to keep the projectile straight.

Hey Jeff you guys should try shooting a rusted steel slug at a rusty steel plate with a few layers of aluminum foil in front of it. the aluminium oxide and Iron oxide should react on impact probably giving an even bigger flash. aluminium oxide and iron oxide are the same two compounds that make Thermite. This works with two large rusted ball bearings where if you smash them together with aluminium foil in the middle you get a small Thermite reaction so with a shot gun slug it should be epic.

I am pretty sure it is the low pressure area around the middle of the slug that explains the stable trajectory. The indentation at the center forces air to move around it more quickly along the greater distance, but since Pressure X Velocity is Constant, the pressure must drop there. The low pressure invites surrounding air to move towards the middle of the slug, providing sort of a guiding tube of higher pressure surrounding the slug.

The air is starting to come back together on the rear section making it stay in the slipstream of the first section. A bulb ahead of an object causes pressure resistance. But if that causes a vacuum area around the object traveling it reduces frictional drag. If the friction loss is more than the pressure gain you have a lower net drag coefficient. Any if the tail is the proper distance to the rear, with the proper shape, the squeeze from the collapse of the medium will add to forward movement, while stabilizing travel.

The flat base forces the center of pressure to be behind the center of mass. Same pressure/mass balance that makes an arrow fly point first. There is also a 'shadowing' effect from the front lobe of the dumbbell. The front lobe acts as a sort of wind-screen, keeping the back-lobe out of the slipstream. If the lee end of the dumbbell gets out of place, the off-balance slipstream forces push it back into position. LDRS hosts lots of amateur rocket launches, and large cable-spools make very stable but odd rockets! Large and Dangerous Rocket Ships, btw...

I don't have a working hypothesis (meaning no math) as to why they work. But I do have some idea of where to start looking. If you take a hardcover book (remove the dust cover first) and hold it by either the bottom or top and flip it into the air, you should see it rotating about two axis. You can do the same with a tennis racket or racquetball racket. IIRC, it has something to do with angular momentum. These slugs might be following a similar principle. An engineering dynamics textbook might contain the answer. 👍

I think the reason it flies so straight, is that the front part acts as a shield, a resistance to the air. The air moving past it gets caught on the back portion, causing drag there. this means that there is high pressure at the back and low pressure at the front part, pushing each respective part in their respective direction.

Likely a toroid air pocket gets formed in the center space that prevents drag but also adds stability, just like the air bubble in the empty bed of a pick up truck (which is why dropping the tailgate increases drag).

Projectiles similar to this called bar shot were used in naval warfare in the age of sail. Two cannon balls joined by a bar, oddly enough. They were used to take out sails and rigging. See also chain shot, grape, canister and shrapnel. Fun times.
