How does a dirty cabin filter affect the performance of your air conditioner

Please know that I am not a professional mechanic. This is not professional advice. I am merely a backyard mechanic.
In this video I run an experiment to determine if a dirty cabin air filter hurts the performance of the air conditioning. Our home ac guy led me onto this. He said that dirty and even the advanced allergen filters reduce the performance and don't allow the ac to blow as cold. He was right. If it is true with home ac, could it be true with cabin filters? The answer is that it does. Find out how much.

Was in a friends truck last year and noticed the heat and defrost were terrible, no strength from the fan. I asked had he replaced the cabin air filter, he didn't even know what one was. I took apart the glove compartment and removed the filter. I could barley get it out for all the crap that was lodged on the top of it. It had not been removed in 6 years, I threw in a brand new one and the difference in blower performance and air flow was amazing! He changes his own oil, but had no idea about the cabin air filter.

Your filter looks clean next to mine. Lol mine had so much dust and dry leaves it was crazy. I never seen anything as filthy as my car's cabin filter. Thanks for your video.

Interesting, I think I will check this with my 2012 Chevy Suburban. Even when driving without the air conditioning on, the outside air coming in isn’t quite as cold as the air outside. Air-conditioning system is fully charged. All blend door actuators have been recalibrated. There’s a right-hand and a left-hand side actuator, both temps are identical when temp dial switched 100% cold. I wonder if with restricted airflow, if there is radiant heat from the hot engine compartment coming through? I will have to check the filter.

You can always clean it with an air hose as well

You could use a wet/dry vacuum to clean out the area . Or use a disposable duster / microfiber towel sprayed with a all-purpose cleaner . And others have used a mirror on a retractable rod to see inside . And I use a flashlight small size to see inside for anything .

After changing the cabin air filter on my 2010 Mercury Milan, the AC blew more colder and the air flow was increased right away. My old air filter was really dirty.

When that filter gets too dirty your compressor works at 300-400 psi and the hoses and lines are only made for 290 psi max

My Jeep Patriot AC wasn’t cold enough or blow at moderate speed. Replaced air filter and cabin filter and now it works like new!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

My a/c wasn't working as well as it did. My cabin filter was dirty, so I changed it. After that, the a/c was back to normal. It made a huge difference. It's the first thing you should check. Also, it's the cheapest thing to fix.

Yes I just added some free games to my 2003 MDX and I figured I change the cabin filter it wasn't getting cold really that cold but after I change the filter I had to put on a jacket when I turn my air conditioner on LOL thank you

Have you experienced erratic hot/cold temp selection gate failure or sporadic complete quit on one side of a dual system? My 2019 Nissan Rogue has not had issues since changing the 3 year old cabin filter.

Only if exterior air is cooler it will make a difference , most cabin air filters only function is to clean outside air ⤵. Recycled air ↩ doesn't get filter out.

Good video. People keep in mind this will only work if you AC is working fine and your Filter is filthy and clogged, nevertheless you should change the cabin filter at least every 2 years or look at your manual interval recommendation.

Dirty cabin air filter same as a house air filter The dirty it is the no air flow there will be available so what happens?? The evap coil starts freezing up (the lower the pressure the lower the temp) ice starts forming a compressor can only shoot out liquid and get it back in vapor form not iced up refrigerant

Thanks!! I took my car to recharge the ac system and is not blowing that cold air, no leaks or anything wrong . I've been thinking that the problem is the cabin filter, I'll replace it tomorrow after work,, thanks for the video..👌

@@staywoke2198 no it didn't , the problem was the blend door actuator. But I definitely recommend you to replace the cabin filter, mine was clogged, and obviously that's restricting the air to flow properly.

Cabin filters only filter exterior air⤵. Has nothing to do with interior recycle↩air . you might have a bad OrpheusTube / expansion valve or a dirty evaporator .

False statment- on gm products and japanese(honda) the cabin air filter is inbetween the evap coil and the blower.so of the filter is filthy dirty The evap coil will start freezing up not giving you cool air and the compressor high pressure increasing to a point of self damage because it keeps pumping liquid and not returning back in vapor to the compressor

For awhile until your coils get covered with dust, then it won’t cool the air very well.

Do you mean you changed the engine air filter (under the hood) and not the ac filter (behind glove compartment)?

Abbas Sahmal it means that your evaporator core is probably getting dirty which means that ac is less efficient and not blowing as cold as it could.

@@ScottsGarage17 Thanks for your reply, My ac only works when I keep my hot & cold button at 20% of colder side and fan speed on 2 or 3, if I increase even one of these my car ac stop working at all, what could be the reason?

I wonder if a dirty cabin air filter is causing the issues with my car's AC. The AC in my Ford Explorer works fine, and then every so often it will stop blowing air for about 7-10 seconds, and then it'll turn on again. The vents on the right side don't blow as much air as the ones on the left side.

@@peterrudy9207 Turns out there was a little plastic valve that was defective. At first the mechanic couldn't find what was wrong as it worked fine. Test drove it again and figured out what it was. Part cost about $10 and labor was about $90 but well worth it. Now my heater even works so well I have to turn it down

Probably not, but a plugged evaporator core drain plug could or a leaking heater core could. Is the carpet below the center of your dashboard damp?
