Knee arthritis is a very common problem. Many people have it and especially as the age increases, after 40, after 45, we see it more common among people. Patients normally come to our clinics with knee pain. Apart from knee pain, they start to develop a little deformed shape inside the knee, which mostly starts inside the knee. To diagnose it, some history taking and examination are required, in which we always ask the patient how the pain started, it is more on stairs, it is more while walking, it is more while sitting, or standing? When we examine them lying down, they always say that the pain is more in the inner lining or inside of the knee. So in this video, we will talk about what are the things that can cause it. Because of this, we diagnose our patients that this knee pain is age-related arthritis pain or it is something else which is other than knee pain or arthritis. So the structure of the knee is the upper bone, thigh bone which we call the femur, the lower bone which we call tibia and the space between these two joints is called joint. A joint or knee joint is any joint of any two bones where the joint meets, we call that place a joint. The bone in front of it is the knee cap which we call patella and it is inside the muscle. I am showing you by removing it, this is your knee joint and the first thing is that if someone has any pain in the knee, we definitely get an X-ray done for him especially standing X-rays. Many people get their X-rays done while lying down. By getting an X-ray done while lying down, the correct pressure is not applied to the knee and many times the problem remains undiagnosed. So it is very important to get a standing X-ray done. And a normal knee X-ray, that is, if it is done on a normal patient who does not have osteoarthritis, the gap between the upper bone and the lower bone, the gap is mostly like a black line and it is equal on both the inside and outside sides, no change in the gap, both are equal and mostly we say that this is a normal X-ray, that is, there is no change in the X-ray of the knee. If we see a patient whose knee is deformed or the pain is increasing and when they are examined for X-ray, then you can see how much difference there is in the X-ray of both the knees. The gap that was intact on the inside between the upper and lower bone has completely disappeared. Both the bones have joined together and the gap on the outside has opened a little. The bone which was straight earlier has moved a little inwards, which we call bowing. There is even more problem on the left, the same thing, the bones are meeting each other. The gap has opened up and in fact, the gap has reduced on the outside as well. This is an X-ray that we associate with a patient suffering from osteoarthritis. It has different grades and different stages and we call these stages of osteoarthritis. In the initial stage, this gap is a little less in the beginning but as it keeps on increasing, the stages of osteoarthritis increase, the gap ends completely and in the end stage we see that the gap in the X-ray ends completely. People call it in different ways, some people say that the gap has ended, and many people say that the gap has come, but if you talk normally, then the problem is the reduction or ending of the gap because if the gap is normal then the grease, cartilage is all maintained in it but as the gap is ending, the bones are joining together. So this is the main method of our diagnosis, which is X-ray and if needed, then sometimes we need MRI. I hope that through this video you have come to know about the main diagnostic criteria of knee osteoarthritis. If you have any questions in your mind regarding this, please write to us.
