One of the reasons that I am avoiding taking my car to the dealership auto center for a recall is to keep their hands off my car. They are crooks!! And people need to wake up to stay away from them. But then again, it is also not easy to find honest good working mechanic shops locally.

I'm sorry you had to endure such bs. Unfortunately, (if you didn't already know), you learned the hard way that dealerships are the most incompetent and high dollar thieves to ever lay hands on your car. To say what they did is unacceptable is an understatement on par with saying the sun is hot. You're a much bigger man than I for your calm approach to an unforgivable act by "professionals".

I use this older style of tensioner that still works on these engines. It's better made, worth the extra cost because engines are more expensive. Timing Belt Tensioner 14520-P8A-A01 Alternate: Dayco 85039 Timing Belt Actuator

My 2010 Accord V6 developed an intermittent grinding / scraping sound when I would drive. Took it to get timing belt replacement and the mechanic said the tensioner was jammed/ stuck and he had to cut it off. Noticed the noise was gone after replacement . Brother in law said it meant the engine was in jeopardy of going kaput

I was told by a mechanic that my engine was going to blow out. I didn't believe him, took it to another mechanic and said it was the tensioner, indeed it was.

Yup. Honda engines are what's called an interference engine, if the timing gets too out of wack, the valves in the head will run into the pistons and bend.

is Gate timing belt tensioner reliable. I found the source of the tapping noise which of course is the tensioner. I put a long screw driver to the tensioner's body while the engine is running, I could feel the ticking vibration throughout my hands. Is Gate reliable for this job. I plan to change it out at 100K miles, my 16 Ody has 70K miles right now. I don't want to do whole TB and WP job right now. Thanks

So, very interesting video Wise Monkey, thanks. But... did replacing that belt tensioner get rid of the noise? I've got a strange tapping noise in a diesel Triton/L200 (4D56 Motor) with 70,000K's, & it only ticks when its hot at idle, if you just touch the throttle & raise the rpm ever so slightly it instantly stops. I can drive it for 500K's & never hear the noise again & it stays stopped until it's idling again. Sometimes it does not do it at all, it's a strange one. But, it's coming from behind the timing cover also, so,, I will change both belts, pulleys, seals and Tensioners & see if that stops it. Anyway, if it doesn't stop the noise it won't hurt having new belts & accessories in there. Cheers.

If it's the tensioner it'll sound bad at idle and/or low rpms. Once you go past that it smooths out and you shouldn't really hear it. If you hearing it at higher rpms you probably have something else bad

Nice. Liked that. I'm looking for help with this problem. Writeup below I've used on Nissan forums. I'm thinking my issue may be a failed hydraulic timing belt tensioner. Any ideas or experience you have is greatly appreciated! Hello all! This is my first Nissan Pathfinder. I have always wanted one since the late 1990s. It's a 1998 SE 3.3L, automatic transmission, 167,000 miles on it. I got it at an estate sale for $2,000. It has a loud knock or tap that happens part-time and so far it's not been resolved. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could point me to anything to check next, or describe if you had similar problems with yours. I've run the motor minimally...only to troubleshoot. Here's what it does and what I've done: 1. When it's first started, it knocks for less than 1 second and then gets entirely quiet. I hear maybe 2 knocks when it first starts. Then, when the motor is accelerated to 2000 RPMs it begins to knock and it keeps knocking until 3000ish RPMs. It increases in speed as the RPMs increase. If I let off the accelerator it stops knocking. When it's higher than 3,000 RPM it goes away. So it's in this midrange RPM the knock is present. It does this sitting still, or driving it. The rig was very sheltered it's whole life from what I can tell. It was driven lightly by an elderly lady. It's in immaculate condition, inside and out. Garaged. Paint and interior is perfect. Motor starts, idles and runs great other than the knock. Oil is full. I dropped the oil pan and checked the main and rod bearings. There was not any play. I changed them anyways. Noise persisted. There was some material in the pan's bottom, about 1/3 tablespoon (1 teaspoon) of what seemed to be fine wear material. Which I would think is normal for 167,000 miles. 2. It has a P1400 error code, for the EGR solenoid. I have not chased that yet. I don't find where this would cause a knock though. 3. The transmission fluid is 1 to 2 quarts low (based on my guess from stick reading), but the noise does not seem to be coming from the transmission, and the vehicle moves and drives fine. No slippage. What could be causing this part-time knock? Hydraulic lifters? Timing belt slap? Harmonic balancer? Cracked flexplate? The noise seems too loud to be the lifters, and doesn't do it at low RPMs like lifters usually do. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
