When a woman becomes pregnant, her body undergoes hormonal changes, primarily influenced by two hormones: estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal shifts prepare the breasts for milk production.
Shortly before childbirth, another hormone called prolactin, which is responsible for milk production, increases in the woman's body. After delivery, when the baby begins to suckle at the breast, it stimulates the nerves in the nipple and areola, sending signals to the brain.
Within the breasts, there are small clusters of glandular tissues called alveoli. These alveoli are responsible for producing milk. During pregnancy, under the influence of hormonal changes, these alveoli begin to multiply and enlarge. The mother's breasts got around 150,000 alveoli in each breast. This is many times more than the number of alveoli that a non-pregnant woman has. The extra alveoli help ensure the mother can produce enough milk to feed her baby.
Inside each alveolus, there are specialized cells called secretory cells or alveolar cells. These cells are the key players in milk production. They produce and secrete milk components such as proteins, fats, lactose, and immune factors.
In response to the baby's sucking and nipple stimulation, the hormone oxytocin is released from the pituitary gland in the brain. Oxytocin triggers the let-down reflex, also known as the milk ejection reflex. This reflex causes the muscles around the alveoli to contract, pushing the milk into the milk ducts and out through the nipple.
Breast milk production operates on a supply-and-demand basis. The more frequently and effectively the baby nurses, the more milk is produced. When the baby empties the breasts during feeding, it signals to the body to produce more milk to meet the baby's needs.

Fathers: Remember you can help feed your baby by increasing the bonding hormones produced by the mom. If you're extra nice and caring towards her, it'll directly result in more milk production. Just a tip if you're feeling left out of the process!

What's even more amazing is that as the baby drinks, the breasts absorb tiny amounts of saliva, which is analyzed for pathogens so that the milk will have those antibodies in it the next time baby nurses.

@aryankohli1968it can hurt to breastfeed in the beginning when the baby is constantly feeding and the nipples are irritated. And also in the first couple of days it also causes uterus to contract, which hurts but it also helps with the healing of the uterus. Pumping was always hard for me, my milk wouldn’t “let down” for a long time when pumping vs it took 30 sec when the baby latched. Otherwise it wasn’t painful, but it wasn’t easy either. It takes time and effort, and waking up multiple times a night. But then when it’s over you get mixed emotions.

I was absolutely fascinated with the whole concept of breastfeeding when my kids were born. I became obsessed with keeping up the demands of the baby’s needs and succeeded. Four months with my first (she was much tougher to keep nursing) and 8 months with my second - a much better nurser. I loved most of it - obviously the hard parts about nursing outweighed the better ones at times, but it was always extremely worth it. Both kids have never had an ear ache, no allergies (barely), and aren’t sickly in general. I’m extremely grateful and fortunate for that. And just grateful that I was physically able to nurse. Not all women are, which is so unfair.

Everything is nice here, but I think the word 'selfless' is not the right word here. The Mother has consciously given birth to the child, it is her prime responsibility to look after that child, hence it can't be selfless. Being selfless is not an option at all. Good day!

@@yash1071 Motherhood is a deeply personal journey, not an obligation imposed by society. The choice to give birth and nurture is a unique path for each woman, requiring respect for individual decisions. Parenthood goes beyond gender roles; it's a shared responsibility. While a woman may choose to give birth, both partners play vital roles in upbringing. This collaboration fosters a balanced and supportive family dynamic. Choosing to give birth and nurture is a selfless act, reflecting commitment and sacrifice. Parenthood becomes a shared journey of love, acknowledging the sacrifices made by both parents for their child's well-being. Ultimately, as men, we may never fully comprehend the depth of their pain. It's akin to recognizing that true understanding comes when we walk in someone else's shoes-only then can we grasp the reality of their sacrifices. Consider gently asking your mom about her experiences and sacrifices, as understanding her perspective can provide valuable insights into the challenges she may have faced.

@@grayowl167Childbearing is not an obligation. Every woman has the right to be childfree if they wish to but it is that sacrificial love in them for their husband and that biological urge in them to produce children of their own flesh and blood that women decided to get pregnant. Having children comes with financial and physical responsibilities and to produce offsprings, both men and women must be prepared for those responsibilities. I love feeding my baby knowing he's getting everything he needs from me. I feel like too many mothers give up because they aren't given enough support or because of the pain. There's no shame in it of course, the pain is genuinely really bad, I would be bleeding at times. My first son I fed for 8/9 months, I stopped because his teeth came in and started biting 😩. Hoping to reach 1 year for my second son. I wish every mother the best whichever way she feeds her baby x

I am breastfeeding my 10th baby, 6 months old in a couple days. I have done so for a little over a year each baby, even my 7th baby who couldn't nurse. I pumped for her for 8 months so she could have breast milk through her first birthday. It is SO painful at times, especially in the beginning and when teeth start coming in, but oh so worth it! The world can be going to the pits, everything around you crumbling, but as soon as you latch that baby on, a gentle quietness overcomes you and all is right with the world. It's the most incredible thing I have ever been blessed to have done❤️
