No one understands how I am a perfectionist. Perfectionism with severe anxiety literally made me stop going to high school for a short time and then also the racing thoughts. I still don't have an actual diagnosis of ADHD , but I have been on anxiety meds my whole life. I still can't get things done. I am trying to get diagnosed

Stay persistent. Anxiety travels so often with ADHD and often women are referred and treated for that without considering ADHD. I've that experience myself.

In high school I would not turn in assignments if I didn't finish it and planned to finish and turn it in last minute or late. Then I would end up not turning it in at all

This happens so often.

Such a timely discussion. As a research scientist I struggle a lot with writing and perfectionism. Previously I could write pages and now I find myself getting stuck waiting for an idea to be "perfect" before I could write it down. Like there are so many thinking traps for me to unlearn to help me get to the writing part. Would love for you to make a video on writing and perfectionism, as a future topic. Love your videos and facebook lives!

Thanks. I love that idea. Writing and perfectionism will be coming some time soon!

I am a scientist working with software development and I have to admit perfectionism has actually been very useful on both pursuits, as reality and computers have a very ruthless way to tell you when you made some big mistake along the way. This is however a double-edged sword, because I have struggled too many times with letting go on projects that were for the most part finished long ago or, too often, spending too much time tweaking some relatively small aspect while the rest of the project went unfinished.

Yes, that can be a real struggle. Letting go of a project when it really is complete, even if you see more that could be changed.

Personally I procrastinate on the tasks i dislike doing ,like cleaning the house and all other obligations.
@DrSharonSaline2 жыл бұрын
So many of us do! Break the task into smaller pieces to make progress. I am bringing up my winter clothes and instead of doing this all at once, I just did the pants first, then the shirts, then the sweaters--one group per day. It took longer but I was less stressed!

How do I improve my writing expression?

Re: suggestion to write down what you are ok/good at…. I literally have no clue how to do that. I’m not sure what if anything I am good at
@DrSharonSaline2 жыл бұрын
Becky, you can start with small things that you accomplish in a day if you can't think about what you are good at it. The goal is to shift to more positive thinking about yourself.

Ironically, I’m watching this only a few minutes after I broke down into hyperventilating and crying because I got frustrated and overwhelmed while watching how-to videos about starting a KZbin channel and ruminating about how many things I need to do to get my life in order and achieve my goals. I wish there was medication to help me achieve the necessary clarity and courage to stop being so inhibited in life but I suspect that’s self-deceptive thinking (focusing on the outcome vs. the longterm process and having a psychological dependence on substances) If by chance you see this comment and have any thoughts on medication options for someone that suspects they have inattentive ADHD combined with social anxiety disorder, I’m all ears! I’m looking for a psychiatrist near me but I even get overwhelmed with that process and usually back out.

I think that more you can break things down into small, doable parts, the higher the chance of getting started and feeling a sense of progress. Dr. William Dodson reports positive results with nonstimulants like guanfacine and clonidine.
