Taller people have higher absolute strength. They tend to weight more, have a much bigger frame. Take strongman competitions, the bigger you are _the better, the taller you are, the stronger you can be. Sure, it's harder to maintain and this is to say that you just have a higher strength cap, but someone who's simply bigger will, on average, lift significantly more. Taller is better in terms of absolute strength. I cannot say much on powerlifting, since I haven't really looked into it, but if you are to, say, take a normal deadlift, a taller person probably still has the advantage given they have a normal ape index, they're _just bigger_ and do not have to lift that much bigger a distance (if at all). Height matters a lot in gymnastics, shorter is better due to similar reasons presented in the video. Doing a front lever while being 6'6" requires _amazing_ strength, not so much if you're a foot shorter though. Shorter people also do tend to have a lot better relative strength. Ranted a tad more without a clear point, but ultimately: taller people are stronger, the ape index matters a lot (you're either disadvantaged/advantaged at pulling/pushing), shorter people have better relative strength. For lifting big weights and putting them down, big = better, not powerlifting though.

As the hosts correctly guessed, tall people are not weaker, but from physics perspective (in terms of work done expressed in joules) they just have to do more work (work = mass * gravity acceleration * distance lifted).

Deadlift was fine, front squat was fine but the all time best exercise for tall people in my opinion if you want to kind of replicate squat and dead lift is the Zuercher squat, such a great hinge movement, you can work on thrusting your hips or using more glute/hip to bring the body upright. I personally think it’s a great supplement to the squat

This plays a very important role in lifting technique. I ended up injuring my back because I was taught to lift heavy by someome much shorter than me. It wasn't until I saw a sports physiotherapist, who did a detailed assessment of my height and proportions, that I discovered why my form was bad and why I had injured myself. Turns out I'm in the same boat as the tall guy in this video. I'm all legs with really long femurs. Which makes my hip and knee position whack when deadlifting and squating. It shows that you really need to learn to lift with someone that understands your body type.
@AidanArentz
@AidanArentz 4 жыл бұрын
@Matt M. My diagnosis from a doctor and physio is irritated discs in my lower back - right at the base of my spine, around L2 - L3. It's from lifting too heavy with poor form and also not having enough trunk/core strength to stabilise my body properly. The flow on effect from that, is the surrounding muscle structure and ligaments have gone into spasm to try and protect my spine. But that has caused a whole bunch of other problems. Like tightness in my lower/mid back and hip joint. I didn't know how serious it was, and it was originally misdiagnosed. So I kept lifting and squatting, with even worse form (now that my joints were stiff from the original injury). So I ended up injuring it further. Really stupid of me to not rest and get help originally. And to not get a second opinion. So now I'm not allowed to do ANY lifting that puts additional compressive force on my spine. Body weight is fine - but no extra weight. 90% of my exercise now is mobility work and rehab. A mix of yoga and pilates. And regular sessions with the physio to help get spasm out of the muscles in my lower back. Sorry for the essay. But yeah. You need to be SO CAREFUL with your back. Deadlifts and squats are fantastic exercises but damn. You really need to learn how to do them properly with an excellent trainer.

I'm also 6 foot 4 tall, and I have 6 foot 8 wing span with a very short torso. Of course, deadlifting is my strongest lift, but I'm actually pretty decent in pressing because of strong triceps and shoulders. Tall Lifts 6 foot 2 over here with a 6 foot 5 wingspan. I actually have short legs and a long torso, I’ve never been disproportionately good at deadlifting or disproportionately bad at any of the other lifts. This stuff matters but just not as much as people think. That being said, I’m not that tall (just tall by lifting standards) so I’m sure things change when someone like yourself who is actually tall lifts.

@Matt M. yeah. I'm in the same boat as you, with similar height. but my wing span is a little longer than my height. I have a short torso. So I have no problems with dead lift since I have a shorter rotational distance.. the higher center of gravity makes it more difficult for gains for squats and esp. with the long skinny frame and long arms.. building upper body is super difficult.. I've relegated myself to thinking I can achieve a lean/toned body instead of one can develop a large muscle mass...
@fg786

So if we talk about proportions, why not show the graph at 2:00 and divide every length by some body part or for example divide everything by their height. Than these bars would give us a clearer indication how these athletes are really different from one another. How is his height an advantage in squatting? The weight on his back via his long femurs creates a tremendous amounf of torque, which the quad has to overcome to get the weight back up. Having shorter femurs would reduce the torque. Or...?

6'6 with an 83" wingspan.. picked up deadlifting (no pun intended) pretty early on and progressed quickly, but bench press was always a major challenge.. best thing that helped was doing high frequency and not always lifting as heavy as possible to practice the skill of benching and really dial in a groove that works well for my frame. back squatting always bothered my lower back, but front and especially zercher squats helped me get a lot stronger in that pattern.

@Matt M.no i work out in a home gym and only have a pair of 25 lb dumbbells. frequency, lighter weights with things like long eccentrics (4,6,8 even 10 seconds) and pauses, and a slightly narrower grip all helped grow my bench. but the biggest thing was realizing that progress in that particular lift was just going to happen really slowly and there was no magic bullet other than putting in time under the bar to make it happen

By saying it is more work because in tall people there is longer range of motion is misleading. Thats not the reason that shorter people can do repeats easier. The reason is the lever effect, in short people the weight is closer to the point of rotation. When you turn a handle(lever) you want the handle long because it will turn easier(you apply the force, so you want to apply it longer from the point of rotation).But when you lift a weight your limb is the point of rotation and the weight applies force to you so you need the "lever" short. Of course the range of motion plays a role in separating the work in increments, but it makes sense to say it after you analyze things even more! than I have analyzed it. If you say it before analyze nothing, it makes no sense. (in other words , if you dont move the weight at all, and just hold your arm in 90 degrees there is no motion at all , but the lever effect still applies , and for shorter people its easier)
@Danuxsy
@Danuxsy 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the leverage is a big factor and is the main reason why taller people have to use more power to move the weight, the force applied is simply higher even with the same weight because the weight is further from the rotation point. YOU ARE RIGHT!

@Matt M. I can really only do deadlifts with a trap bar. If the gym doesn't have one, I either can't do them or I have to just make do with light weight and high reps. For squats I have a little better form if I do front squats. But again, that limits the weight I can do and it really doesn't put that much less stress on my lower back. Honestly I just do most of my heavy leg work using the leg press.

Well I think the comment I was typing was deleted so in short: You need to make a more serious, scientific breakdown of the idea that being taller (even if you had exactly the same proportions as someone smaller) and being longer limbed makes doing more reps harder. Work is just a measure of force multiplied by distance, not a measure of energy expenditure relative to the amount of energy you are capable of providing to your muscles. It absolutely makes sense that having long legs in relation to your body/long femurs in relation to your shins is disadvantageous for squatting and deadlifting/pulling when you're looking at the maximum weight you can move compared to someone with the same muscular force generation capacity (I hope that made up term makes sense), but shorter limbs. However, the idea that your 80% is harder than someone else's 80% is really hard to wrap my head around without some serious science behind it. On the surface, 80% should just be 80%, no? If your 80% is harder than someone else's 80%, wouldn't you expect either that they could lift beyond their own 100%, or that you would be unable to lift your own 100%? If they're able to do an equivalently loaded (percentage wise) lift while using less of their available energy (percentage wise), wouldn't they just not actually be lifting at their 80%?
@jackbartlett6530

I think they mean more in terms of recovery. As in like how deadlifting is more fatiguing than benching so someone shorter could theoretically handle more volume than someone taller. I'm not sure though so hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

@bartek4836
@bartek4836 4 жыл бұрын
It is completely ok, that you have wide squat stance, moreover it is advisible if you have long femurs or generally speaking legs. Need of using wide stance might be also determinated by your hip structure. And how should you change your starting position? It fully depends of the lift you execute, it is also pretty personal case.

I agree with Mr. Sebastian. Even with the same angles in the hips, someone with long legs will have a wider stance. I'm 5'10'/178cm & 82kgs and my legs aren't quite as long as Zack's, with short arms & torso & wide shoulders. My squat stance is pretty wide. My max C&J is around 100kg, but my limit is catching weight overhead. I haven't really pressed my clean, but I could probably work up to 140kg in a few months. If I can deadlift it, I can clean it -- I've already lifted the weight most of the way. I've found deep-hip'platform' deadlifting (where I grab the bar near my ankles), and one-handed dumbbell lifting to be useful supplemental exercise. The platform deadlifts make regular lifts feel shorter, and the one-handed dumbbell lifts are good for balance and cross-body support, which are more important with long legs. The platform & one-handed lifts also train technique and tire my muscles more with less weight, while putting less strain on my joints at crucial points. I also find working more technique training with lower percentage of my max, and training my weak points with supplemental exercises to be useful. For example, I generally program my squats for the weak point, which for me is about 65% of the way up. I mostly work with weights I can lift with control at this point. I'm also 50, so strength and endurance come fairly easily, while flexibility, smoothness and coordination take more work than when I was younger.

@@jeffreyquinn3820 it's pretty interesting what you have said about one handed dumbell lifting as the accesory move. Are you doing single leg deadlift or you simply try to lift a dumbell from the ground above your head?

you got to figure out by your self, im 191cm wide hips wide but cranky shoulders, good at both dl but bench is close grip/shoulder width elbows almost touching body, overhead press close grip, any wider than shoulder i cant move sh*t, squat close stance frog feet with low bar is best for me, also good at front sq. Just try all options. Also look for strongmans they are are tall. If u tall and want big weights, you got to eat realy big trust me.

Jeah another 6,4 here. I loved video. I am not weightlifter but of course i Use alot of elements from it finding out it actually helps so much with My back pain and overall stiffness even dough i already suffer from certain medical back issues. Tall lifters dont get discouraged. We are slower in progress but in the long run "bigger frame=more muscle" in our case persistancy prevails. Keep grinding.
