@@tobycolin6271 The reason why this cage is quieter might not be related to watt losses at all. Plastic just doesn't produce and carry sound as well as metals do. That's why even the cheapest of the cheap trash bicycle bells will still have a metal bell body. You can make the hammer, clamp and springs out of plastic and it'll still function as a bike bell. But the moment you replace the bells sound body it'll stop making "ding" noises and instead sound more like a "thud" that's also way more quite again. So I propose the theory that the Shimano cage is noisier simply because it's better at creating noise and isn't made of soft flexy and thus noise absorbent plastic.
@tobycolin6271

@@gedrot2486 it’s quiet because it doesn’t spin there’s a thick rubber seal creating tons of drag. As a mechanical engineer and avid cyclist, it hurts to see these on the market. Hambini and PT are indeed correct in which friction drag is greater when placing ball bearings further from the inner race centerline. In other words, more torque is required to turn a large bearing than a small one.

"Free spinning = low friction " bearing is the biggest ploy companies who make them try to push onto consumers. It does not matter how they freely spin. What really matters is how they operate under real load conditions. Or another words what is their coefficient of friction under the load that the chain is exerting on them. We have done an extensive research, designed special bearings for this project, empirically tested them under the real load conditions in laboratory and we came up with a solution where actually best possible option to achieve low friction on the bearing is by greasing them with special grease. This is the reason they don't " freely spin" under hand. With our solution you get great bearing durability and low maintenance. Some other companies simply play the game of having “heavy” alloy pulley (mass) and no oil or a drop of oil in the bearing so they can spin for a long time. Our pulley rotational mass is very low which will simply not freely spin. The reality is that bearing friction is actually not very important because relatively good bearings only consume less than 0.3W (all together). The difference between best bearings is of about 0.1W. Where real gains are is the preload spring tension where we can gain 1.2W as we were able to achieve lower spring tension with our design compared to others and the fact that the pulleys are big - this is what gives you the biggest savings by reducing the angle between chain link plates during the operation hence reducing the friction on the chain. Free spin pulley or not free spin in 0 load condition is not important.

There is a simple test that you could do to verify the saving or otherwise for this product. Fit the bike to a smart trainer and fit a crank or pedal based power meter. Get two head units, one to read the trainer power and one to read the crank power. Warm up the trainer for 10 minutes and do a spin down. Now pedal at a steady wattage as shown at the crank for 15 minutes with the standard Shimano setup. Fit the AB pulley and repeat at the same crank watts. Calculate (Av. crank watts - Av. trainer watts) for standard setup = A. Calculate (Av. crank watts - Av. trainer watts) for AB pulley setup = B. Calculate (B - A) to give you watts saved or otherwise with AB pulley.

@@paulmichaelpolsinelli1945 , sure, the ceramic speed oversized pulley is likely fewer watts, but at what cost? Remember, 75% of the wind drag on a bike is the rider profile, not the bike itself, so just getting more aero in position will save you dozens of watts effort. At best the ceramic speed pulley only saves you 1.3 watts, but why pay $549.00 to save a meager 1.3 watts? My aero helmet from Bontrager (Ballista) saves me 7-10 watts at 45 kph, and it only cost $139.00 on sale, a much better investment. Just compare how many watts a component offers, then compare the price, a simple ROI for an engineering mind to decide.

If injection moulding carbon-reenforced plastic is sufficient, then why bother with carbon? The weight is already below the CS offering. Unfortunately neither Hambini, nor GC Performance tested this part under load, so the jury is out. Out of pure conjecture, I would guess that this part is never under any real lateral load simply because it is attached to a derailleur held in position by a spring that is trivially overpowered by the force of an off-centre chain line, so lateral stiffness probably doesn’t matter much. And forward/back stiffness probably doesn’t matter much for similar reasons.

Questions about noise: 1. Was shifting tuned before recording with stock pulleys? 2. Was shifting re-tuned before recording with ab ospw? 3. Does noise from pulley matters more than freehub noise? Why?
@GCPerformance18
@GCPerformance18 2 жыл бұрын
yes to both shifting questions at the end of the video there is another test where I spin it again and it is more quiet, and noise does matter more then freehb noise because freehub noise only occurs when not pedaling so you cna control it but sometimes when pedaling you hear a lot of noise, it is something you might be use to but when installing this pully on the bike it was much more silent, and i knowit is not a big deal, but something cool, if you ever noticed back in the day with 9speed and 10 speed stuff it was silent and smoothh shifting that was because there was more spacing in the cassette and the chain was a little large allowing it to absorb more noise and chain rattle..... its something you probably dont know you need or want untill you experience it, by all means am I saying go out and buy this product but just remeber the first time you hear this for yourself in person from a friend or at a shop you wil be suprised how quiet the drivetrqain is

Dude, you bought one of those to put on your bike? I would not say it was for the reason it looks cool, since you work in a shop I would try to explain that it is under test. You are going to lose credibility when you try to pitch other stuff. People are going to be laughing at you man.

What do you? Lose credibility. At no point did I tell anyone to buy anything. That is for the people with there own money to make that decision. Also I got sent that out for free to show it off. My Chanel is and has never been about me telling you what to buy. It is just to show off cool things and let you make the decision if you wanna buy it or not. You don’t have to buy it, and also as much as we can sit around here and listen to one or more people say it’s crap. I am always a believer in people riding stuff and trying it for themselves, now in this case it is something that is $700 dollars so the consumer would have to see if it is worth it or not. But these prices are not new to the industry. Ceramicspeed has versions of ospw for $650 for a coated version and like $1400 in 3D printed titanium

Thanks GC, nice video, gr8 to see a guy talking. Agree quieter and looks the part. Saving watts? I don't thinks so. It is on the return path of the chain, therefore only to take up the excess chain due to casstte and chain ring variation, sees no load. The only load on it is the derailleur spring. Buy to look sexy. But for performance, hmmmm 🤔
@GCPerformance18
@GCPerformance18 3 жыл бұрын
Well put. I can get behind that statement. I never push these as an option to gain speed.
@AbsoluteblackCc
@AbsoluteblackCc 2 жыл бұрын
It can save up to 3.5W. i will try to explain why in two parts 1) yes chain is on the return part but you forget that the chain has the be fed back to cassette from the cage. Imagine that you are pulling that chain a little backwards and when you pedal chain has to go forward hence you get some resistance. If you hold the chain below the cassette you need to overcome that force first to push forward. Now imagine you help the chain by pushing it towards the cassette from the bottom. Suddenly you dont need to overcome any resistance so you have a little gain. 2) how we can remove that resistance? In simple terms by A - reducing the cage spring tension B- by decreasing the chain links bending angle with a bigger pulleys which in turn decreases the friction on the chain itself. The less friction on the chain the less Watts lost. This is just a generalization for you to better understand where the gain comes from. We also used other tricks to reduce the friction but these are the main two components why oversized pulley wheels make more sense.
@waynosfotos
@waynosfotos 2 жыл бұрын
@@AbsoluteblackCc really? I agree it looks sexy and you want to compete with Ceramic speed. But come on! If you disconnect the chain from the cassette and chainrings and remove the spring tension the chain will almost fall through the pulleys on its own weight. Even if the bearings were better the difference is so small incomparision to the losses on the loaded side the difference is insignificant. It is like removing one panel bolt from a car and saying you can feel the difference. I admire you offering an alternative to ceramic speed, but they are also stretching the truth.

Hey I just bought one of these but have had a nightmare trying to fit it (probably my lack of ability). I'm trying to fit it to an Ultegra Di2 derailleur, but I find that it doesn't take up the slack at all. No idea what I've done wrong but in the gears where the chain was under the proper tension I have to agree that it was super quiet and (probably placebo) did seem easier to turn the pedals. I just want to get it to fit properly so I can take it for a spin.
