Great video and just shows what's possible for £300. Xeon/i7 haswell 16GB workstation with Ssd and Rx480 8gb can be done for under 300. Another option is 10100f, h410 and 16GB for 180 new. And rest 2nd hand, say 100 for rx480, psu, case, ssd another 60 to 70. £350ish total.

You've made my day ;) I spent £350 in June this year as I had enough of my optiplex 780 and wanted to game during my free time. The specs: Xeon e5 1620v2 32gb ddr3 Ram Rx 580 8GB 256 SSD 1Tb HHD It's basically a dell t3610 with a GPU. Then when the Xbox one X came out I switched to consoles due to the amount of cheating and exploits that I would come across while gaming online on PC. Nice review, looking to see how this gets on in the future becaue my main tower PC also has the i5-4460 CPU. The only difference is that I have a GTX 960 (2GB version), so I'll obviously be upgrading the GPU at some point. But if it gets to the point whereby the GPU and CPU both show weaknesses, I'll keep this as a secondary system and just build a new PC, to whatever the best components are at the time (at the moment the Ryzen 5 3600 looks promising).

@@mmq007.1 Actually when I built my sister's computer for her a while back I only used one stick of RAM and that's been working out pretty well for her. She's probably not going to upgrade the RAM until she has the money to buy a new processor and motherboard which will mean she'll need new RAM anyway (she's on DDR3 so she'll need DDR4). The problem with the verge though is they bought two sticks and could have had dual channel but they installed their ram incorrectly.

as much as i love pc gaming it's hard to beat the Series S as far a budget gaming is concerned. I got one a few months back in near perfect condition for only £180 on Ebay and its been great as a living room entertainment box. I have a 3070 laptop for most gaming but wanted a device for the living room, a smart tv box that can actually game and its perfect for that. price to performance is unbeatable, how else can you play metro exodus enhanced edition with full raytracing at 60fps for only £180, yeah the resolution is sub 1080 in that game but the TAA upscaling is so good you'd never know (trust me I played thru the whole game on the xbox and it was gorgeous). Also bear in mind that the Series S will be receiving new games for at least the next 5-6 years, PC's age alot quicker, without the optimization that consoles get these machines wont be able to handle late gen games plus once the gpu drivers stop coming its over which for used cards could be quite soon. Just look at the r9 270, it was held up as a ps4 alternative back in 2013 but how many new games can it even boot let alone handle smoothly (2GB's of Vram anyone), meanwhile brand new games continue to release on PS4 and (with the exception of cyberpunk) run at 1080/30, so the PS4 looks to have been the better investment in the end. And yes I know PC games are cheaper but most Series S owners will be relying on Gamepass anyway. Plus did I mention that the Series S has emulator support (no modding necessary), i've spent more time playing Gamecube and PS1 than actual xbox games. it also has native OG Xbox support (which is only now becoming viable on PC) and Xbox 360 support (which no Budget PC can handle). So all in all I'd definitely recommend the Series S, Either as the perfect second device for the living room or kids, or as a budget primary device for those who don't like PC gaming or can't afford to upgrade down the line (Seriously this seems like the perfect New-Gen device for teenagers, I'd have loved it as a kid).

I agree with much of what you say, but there are many thousands of OLDER games that either never made it to any Xbox, or ones that can now look and play better on PC. If your PC is newer than the game, you can probably crank up the resolution and all the settings to max, and it will still run brilliantly. A lot of older PC games get patched, officially or otherwise to use more modern standards. If your PCs SSD dies, you can plug in any old drive. You don't have to worry about only using MS 'official' storage devices. Most desktop PCs can be upgraded to 32GB, add the latest WiFi and USB, have multiple HDD/SSDs, faster GPUs etc. Consoles have limited upgrades.

@@another3997 Ah but your forgetting that Xbox supports UWP, what that means is that installing emulators is super easy nowadays with no modding required, with emulators available for everything up to PS2 and GameCube. The only generation of games with poor support is the 360 gen. Whilst 360 games are supported natively, there's no disk drive and the selection of 360 games on the MS store is mediocre. Still missing out on a few older games is worth it for being able to play new ones for such a low price. And as far as storage is concerned you don't need the official MS ssd. Any external HDD will work. I keep about 8 games on the internal storage and then the rest on a HDD, it only takes a few mins to transfer them over to the internal and your not doing that often anyway, plus you can play your Xbone games straight from the HDD. So trust me irl it's nowhere near enough of an inconvenience to justify buying the SSD as you can have 8 games on the go and only have to wait 5-10 mins to transfer more, plus the time your losing there is made up by the time your saving with the wicked fast loading times that are actually faster than even the fastest gaming PC (trust me I wish my gaming laptop could load that fast). Look I love gaming PC's. But when it came to a living room device for my little sisters the Xbox was the obvious choice. Kids wanna play the latest games and no PC can match the modern gaming experience of the Xbox for £180, It's an easy seamless experience whilst whatever PC I could've built would involve diving into the graphics settings to get even a fraction of the experience (not something little girls are gonna be able to do). Plus it's got all the old Halo's for my stepdad and a MegaDrive emulator for my Mum. Plus it's got all the latest TV features I.e. 4k, HDR and 120hz support which definitely isn't a given for older PC's.

main issue with console pricing is that every game you buy will be full price so 50-60 if not more + multiplayer costs. initiial low price is an amazing deal as long as you stick to 2-3 games max. anything above that and you will get a competitive pc specs wise and then keep saving up on games imho

I know teraflops are a bad way to measure performance, like how the xsx has more teraflops than the ps5, yet the ps5 seems to always run better, but the 2070 super is 9 teraflops, ps5 is 10 teraflops, and xsx is 12 teraflops. A 2080 is 7.5 teraflops. I say theyre better because of the teraflops, rtx capabilities, and also because console oses are probably more optimized for games than windows 10 is. CPU does make sense though.

Or develop your own games, plug in any electrical instrument and create music, create digital artwork like 3d models and paintings, create any program your capable of creating, you can make a living of a pc. And you can upgrade them.

@@mikek92 Yeah I saw a video on that, but it's still limited to the platform that Microsoft created... the Windows Something Platform which is a kind of universal instruction set for all Microsoft devices. I think you could get more out of it without that extra interpretation layer. And it's stupid here in Europe the gamepad goes for €60 by itself. I was looking to buy one when I realized what a deal the Series S is.

The series S has ZERO value imo. Roughly 300 gigs of storage(lesser than most pc's 5 years ago), a third of the horsepower of the series X , and basically zero backwards compatibility considering it can't play your older xbox discs. A glorified game pass machine rather than a dedicated console. One would be better off just saving more and getting the series X or the Ps5 digital at the very least.

Series S is going to hurt game development in the long run because it has no right to exist as a console. It will help gamers for the next 2-3 years by being a cheap console, but then the series X will see some price cuts which will make the series S completely irrelevant. It's like releasing a revision of Xbox 360 alongside the Xbox One. If Sony makes a PS5 pro and MS makes a better version of Series X, then we will see series S games run at dynamic 720p with the game looking worse than native 720p without AA (thanks TAA), a screen resolution reserved for entry level gamers these days. Also, I'm not a fan of consoles without disc drives, so I would save up to get the Series X/PS5 instead because I want to buy games by myself and then put the damn disc into the console with my own hands. *UPDATE (November 2022):* Series S is out for two years now. I realized that while Series S will limit developers vision for more ambitious games, it will be beneficial for the audience since the economic climate left most PC players stuck with older components (people with newer hardware had to overpay for their hardware). Running on Series S means anyone owning the faster consoles will see better performance and higher end PC players will finally attain 144+ fps. However, if chip manufacturers manage to sort out the shortage within 2024 and MS and Sony end up releasing faster versions of their consoles, then and only then Series S will be good. Also, Series X is getting a price hike, which means the Series S will be mainstream and the 4K dream will still be a dream for most players until 10th gen consoles show up later in this decade. I think that this generation will last a long time compared to 8th gen. The good news is that my current GPU has 1% chance of running GTA 6 than not running it at all.

@@TigerChamp99 indeed bruh it already runs valhalla at dynamic 720p if you enable the 60 fps mode. This console is already outdated.. What a garbage product. They legit could've targeted 1080p 60 fps and given a bit more performance (at least 6 tflops like the one X vs a measly 4, and yes I do know that gcn tflops≠rdna tflops but you get my point right? ). You're exactly on point when you compare it to an xb360 in an xbox one era. Both the one and 360 could run gta 5, except the version of 5 running on the 360 was much, much worse. All of this coupled with the fact that Microsoft has had a crap history when it comes to worthwhile exclusives (imo games like halo and forza are good but they don't hold a candle to the masterpieces that are god of war /ghost of tsushima/last of us) will only lead to another Microsoft defeat this generation. I mean, the switch, a portable console for somewhat casual gamers, released 3 years after the xbox one, outsold the entire xbox one lineup(one,one X and one s).

I was able to get a Fury X for 105 usd (with no cooler, bought a morphus II for 20 usd for it), 16gb of ddr3 1866 ecc in 4x4 for quad channel for 13 usd, a 2689 for 33 usd with a stock cooler, a hunanzhi x79 mobo that I caught on the 11/11 aliexpress sale for 33 usd shipped, a 512gb nvme 660p used for 38 usd, and a 600w EVGA off of B stock on tuesday for 28 usd, and a Matrexx 50 for 40 usd new. I would say this pc is very comperable to the series S, it just lacks RT, but from what I have seen AMDs RT cores are quite weak anyways.

The Xbox Series "S" (4 TFlops) is a pointless Console, its literally worse than Last Gens Xbox One X (6 TFlops). What Microsoft should've done was had two version of the Xbox Series "X" just like the Ps5 which is have a Digital Only Console and a Disc Version of the Console.

@@JaimeIsJaime It's only matched because the games that are available today were designed to run on Jaguar cores which are beyond pathetic. This 4c4t CPU in the video will crap itself when next gen games start coming, requiring the full use of a modern 8c16t Zen. At that point you will have to change CPU+motherboard+RAM which is like 60% of the whole PC. While the console will just chug along. Series S might not be anything special but it is a good value proposition now and for a few years ahead. Especially with the overpriced PC parts these days.

@@tusux2949 problem with series S is it is so weak that if you have an already old pc like i7 3770 and RX 480, unlike PS5/series X the Series S doesn't offer any real advantage right now. and when it does faster CPUs will also gonna be cheaper. so when you really need to upgrade Series S also won't offer better value. and that should be more than enough for the whole lifespan of this console which should be around 4-5 years before microsoft releases a series P or series Z or something to replace this console as they don't believe in generations anymore and since that "Series" kind of naming scheme is not a coincidence.

xeon e5 2470 8c/16t for 25$, ecc 16gb ram for 25$ and mobo for 40$. Add psu for 30$ 500w and ssd 240gb for 27$ hdd 1tb for 35$. And you have left 120$ for used rx 580 and you can game at 1440p 60 fps at same settings as xbox (medium-high).

Its so close to my pc. 4670k rx570 4GB ,8GB ram, bought preowned parts. Spent around 2500sek (250 dollar) so far. I can play and stream diablo and awesomenauts, so im happy. Im looking for upgrades. Trying to get 16GB ram. Also thinking on a cheap cpu upgrade, 4770k cost to much. But Ryzen 3100 is not to expensive. I allways keep an eye open for the second hand market. Best deals is when you can buy a upgrade for the money you get by selling your old parts but its alot of job to find the deals.

The only thing I question when making comparisons like this is why doesn't anyone ever consider the input devices? I can't help but think for that $300 PC you needed not only KB/M, but also a Controller for racing games, whereas the console comes with that included in its price. In reality you're looking at a $260 console (taking into account the oft priced controller at $40)

​@@irishlad2505 Gamepass is cheap. For the storage, after you finish playing xbox series optimized games just delete it. If you playing Xbox 360 or One games, I suggest you use toshiba canvio basic 1tb or 2tb which is budget friendly universal external hard drive.

There was one of the games, Watch Dogs Legion if memory serves me well, that Alex from Digital Foundry said that comes with an .ini file for each of the consoles.... this happens on the PC version, so you can replicate the almost exact settings there.
