I believe Vegeta uses his ki blast spam technique because of his training in the Frieza Force. Assuming he was sent out on missions to planets with weak inhabitants, he could use it to wipe out entire armies of the planet's defenders in a few moments.

That's not really how it's used until the Cell Arc though. He uses it as a diffused blast move that traps the opponent in his fight against Gohan and Zarbon to rack up a lot of cheap damage.

Vegeta's Technique is probably at its best in Dragon Ball FighterZ. At launch, it was easily one of the best assists in the game due to its ability to pin down the opponent, and early on, you were unable to cancel blockstun into reflect/superdash when blocking ki blasts, that buff was added almost specifically because of the Vegeta's Technique assist. In the last few patches, it's become an incredible combo filler tool due to being able to be cancelled into any other special move Vegeta has, and they even added a new variation of Vegeta's Technique where he falls from the air while using it, enabling crazy looking air-to-ground-to-air again combos.

I remember reading something which postulated that Goku was trained as a duelist while Vegeta was trained as a soldier. Then the article would bring up, amongst other things, how many of Vegeta's techniques were specifically geared for multiple opponents rather than a specific intended target like a "battleground vs. tournament setting". Tbh, it would be helpful to see more of Vegeta's time working for Frieza to get an idea of where his instinctual base lies. By the time he (as a 27-year-old who hasn't taken training seriously) fights Goku, it's implied that he never really had a problem with his approach before. His entire first Arc as a character is almost 30 years of programming and a life of practically no training, being undone. I seriously wish Mangakas had more leeway to explore more within their own developments. Vegeta had a pretty awesome "divide and conquer" strategy going until his first encounter with Zarbon. It's the kind of thing I would've liked to have seen more characters have the opportunity to make use of.

@stanbrule9357 Iirc, his method while clearing planets for Frieza was to weed out the best fighters and take them out as a way to discourage all others. Either that, or they'd find him. Of course, that shows just how strange the scaling has gotten since Vegeta was a prodigy whose power level, without further assistance naturally sat around the 20,000 range, meaning that universe 7 likely had an average strength that stayed within that area until the barriers were crossed over the course of the Namek Saga. I recall watching a "What if..." that had Bardock convincing Gine and King Vegeta to leave the planet along with the baby Kakarot, taking Prince Vegeta and Raditz in tow. At the end, it left off with King Vegeta wanting to subjugate the planet, and Bardock wanting to lay low. With the major factor being who was able to sway Prince Vegeta to their side since he was so much stronger than the next guy. Unfortunately, I never got to see how that would go down.

Better than no-one there, it's Goku with a fully-charged Super Kamehameha right in their face. I imagine a fight where Vegeta realizes he's not strong enough to defeat the enemy on his own, so he plays up his own insecurities. He just acts like Cell Saga Vegeta again, but this time, it's just a bit. The enemy gets cocky, thinking that they've got this in the bag now, which is what opens them up to Goku's surprise attack.

didnt piccolo use this when fighting goku during the tenkaichi budokai? I remember the anime making it seem very impactful with the explosions hitting a stunned and free falling goku. I feel like the technique would be good for forcing the opponent to do something then going in for a follow up while they are distracted, or as a finisher to a combo attack where the opponent is stunned and you throw this out before they can recover so they have a harder time escaping unscathed. otherwise it seems like an easier way to dispatch of a group of weaker fighters

It's not that crazy to have the death beam be mini death balls sometimes. Ki blasts are not hardly defined, and most ki attacks are the same anyway, with basic variations (speed, shape, power) and personal flare. Even Vegeta did his own version of the Death Beam at least once before. Pretty sure even King Vegeta did that. Death Beam really isn't anything special. It kills you if you're too weak, but if you're strong enough, it's really just like any other ki blast. You can dodge it, deflect it, and even face tank it, just like ANY OTHER KI BLAST. At least moves like the Kienzan actually hit way above the user's weight class, but also, anyone can do it. Makes you wonder why more people don't use it, since it's clearly not a hard move to learn. Instead of Super Kamehameha, Goku shoulda tried to slice Frieza in half with his own Kienzan.

@@channelseven328 How was Vegeta helpful against the Ginyu Force? He was the reason they were there in the first place, he couldn't defeat any of them other than a surprise attack on Guldo. He gave up against Recoome and needed to be rescued by Gohan and then attacked Gohan for the help. He then fled and left Goku alone against Ginyu and Jeice, leading to the body-swap - something Vegeta knew about and could've prevented. Android 19? Piccolo was faining injury and about to fight 19 when Vegeta showed up. Piccolo at this point was close to SSJ Vegeta/Goku's power, so would've been able to defeat 19. And Piccolo would have been smart enough (whilst also lacking in Vegeta's ego) to not show off and waste all his energy like Vegeta did. Piccolo would've paced himself better knowing he needed to defeat 19 AND 20. Vegeta showed off, then bluffed his way out of fighting against 20, causing 20 to flee and go back to his lab to activate 17&18. They didn't need to use Spirit Bomb. Goku was ready to go get Gohan, who would've creamed kid Buu easily. Vegeta was like, nah, let the humans work for it. It's damn lucky that Mr Satan was there or that plan would've failed miserably. Thank Mr Satan for that one. He didn't save Krillin at all. You've made that up. Krillin escaped Dodoria with a Solar Flare. Dodoria blasted the landscape thinking it was enough to kill Krillin, Gohan and Dende, then turned around to return to Frieza. On his way back to Frieza was when Vegeta ambushed and killed Dodoria.

His super saiyan ki output was still available he just couldn’t use it. I argue that boost would be too much for Piccolo pre Kami fusion.

How does it work? It doesn't. Ever. EVER. lol but that SAID, with ONE slight change, Vegeta could make that MUCH more effective: by either making them highly condensed and sharpened BLADES of energy which detonate upon piercing the enemy, and making them all honing attacks. The PROBLEM with his approach is when you throw a bunch of weaker attacks rather than one big one, yeah some of them are more likely to hit, but there's no POINT in them landing if the enemy can tank them individually. If I swing as hard as I can with ONE punch, and it connects, that's going to hurt you a lot more than if I do 20 or 30 short little jabs that lack any real striking power and don't HURT you. Vegeta's going QUANTITY over quality when he does this, and it's just a waste of energy. If he instead put all that energy toward his SPEED by spiking his ki up suddenly, that'd be BETTER than spray and pray. We KNOW Vegeta CAN form solid, piercing attacks with "hard energy" - he does it to Goku during their fight in the buu saga when he creates these U-shaped energy blasts that don't explode but instead act as restraints to pin Goku to the rocks. If he'd just adapted that approach to create a Vegito-like energy BLADE, he could have impaled Goku right there. In fact that's PROBABLY where Vegito's energy sword COMES from - from Vegeta. Goku has never shown an ability to create hard objects out of energy - only Gotenks and Vegeta have managed that (unless destructo disc counts). SPEAKING of which, it'd be far more lethal if he'd rapid-fire energy DISCS honed to crazy sharp cutting edges. Granted, most villains can regenerate - but that's why if he made honing, PIERCING attacks that DETONATE when he wants them to, that could be a BIG threat to any enemy (especially NOW - he could in theory do that with hakkai energy). To me, Vegeta's big problem has always been WASTING energy instead of channelling it to something more useful - like hitting a new form, or creating more useful variations on attacks. His attacks tend to be VERY energy intensive, so if he misses or they fail, he's always left too worn out to keep going. Imagine THOUSANDS of energy needles that individually cost little energy but which react with the ki of the target once they pierce them, blowing up inside of them. Deadly. If THAT had hit Cell, he may have SURVIVED it by regenerating but it would have dropped his power by a good amount. OR, he could invest in an all-out attack LIKE Final Flash, but add some spice to it - like, he pours ALL that energy that would go into a final atonement type explosion - like his sacrifice against buu - and puts it into an energy BOMB which follows the enemy and can split up into smaller pieces aand close inn on them from all sides. REALLY though, Vegeta with a Vegito-like energy sword would be VERY dangerous - especially if he could make it so sharp it could slice limbs off guys like Jiren. If he'd taken Jiren's LEGS off, he'd be DONE. Jiren simply being much stronger than him doesn't necessarily mean a crazy-sharp destructo-disc type blade from Vegeta couldn't cut him - and Vegeta DID land atttacks on him so we know he can do it. Plus..there's no WAY he'd see a sudden sword coming. Vegeta sure didn't when Goku Black Rose did it to him. That's a very dangerous attack that makes getting in close enough for hand-to-hand combat risky. What I want to see from Vegeta going forward is to perfect Utra Ego to the point where he has a crazy strong hakkai shield around him at all times that can destroy incoming attacks or any enemy stupid enough to try to hit it - and if they're SO crazy strong as to somehow overcome that, he'd just get stronger with every hit he takes, which could allow him to make that SHIELD much stronger and more able to destroy the enemy. It'd be his perfect counter to ultra instinct - UI works by countering and evading all attacks, while this hakkai shield version of UE would LET the attacks hit and make them useful to Vegeta. Yin and yang. Perfect opposites.

When you showed the manga panel of what Cell did I instantly thought of DBZA: "Vegeta NO! Vegeta YES! Vegeta no." ...nah, but seriously, id consider it less of a "technique" and more of a Story Element...just like the flurry of blasts themselves, it shows the user's current State Of Mind...as in, Vegeta's usual tactics arent working as he'd planned, so in a bit of a panic, he tries ANYTHING to make the opponent slip up...the intention being, once One of those blasts hits and staggers their defenses, and Vegeta regains the advantage, THEN he can switch back to Focused attacks like GallicGun or BigBang...its like when a boxer gets a couple of headshots to knock him dizzy, so he starts Flailing His Arms instead of throwing 'proper' punches-- he just needs to get some space between him and the other guy, as he tries to screw his head back on...then, once he stops seeing double, he can resume working Hooks and Jabs, to the Body or the Head... ...but, in most cases of the Story, Vegeta never actually GETS that 'breathing room' he tries to create, and the "Technique" ends up being the last offensive measure mounted, before Vegeta ultimately succumbs to his OTHER "Story Element" fate-- being 'Red-Shirted' by the enemy, just for Someone Else (like Goku, or Gohan against Cell) to Actually save the day...

Speaking of ki attacks, I wish the show did a better job of explaining what beam attacks actually are. For example, why can’t Goku do the Galick gun? Or masenko? Or final flash? And functionally, what’s the difference when Vegeta decides to use big bang attack over something else? Some depth would be nice

Ki blast spam would be crazy in any ones hands (villian). Unfortunately toriyama sensei cursed Vegetas bloodline to use the technique poorly.
