Best factor is the individual dog's personality. If you depend too much on breed to pick a dog you could get frustrated with an introverted golden retriever or mad your German shepherd is a derpy dummy, because while breed stereotypes sometimes work each dog is an individual personality.

Yes I've read articles that say that the Bulldog actually has the most powerful bite in the dog kingdom based on pounds per square inch or something like that. Which is where the saying about Bulldogs refusing to let go comes from. Unfortunately they've been bred to have these huge powerful heads on the squat deformed little bodies and to be somewhat obese so they can be slow and goofy looking in the chase but still terrifying once they get their teeth on you. Mine was just playing with me and I wasn't paying attention like I usually do. My pinky finger slid on her spitty squeaky toy toward her back teeth where she wasn't trying to bite me. ( I taught her to be gentle with her squeaky toys because otherwise they're destroyed in one session.) Even so, she almost bit it in half just working her squeaky toy with no real intentional force whatsoever. That is not a bite you want to experience, as it felt like she could have bitten my hand in half like a knife through butter. 😮 On the other hand, she's Porky enough that she needs help getting on the bed now that she is in late middle-age.

They don't have to be the strongest dog they only have to have a strong bite. The worst and most damaging Jack Russell terriers can move do the most damage because they are a carrier and they do the most facial reconstruction damage in the United States. Also poodles have more crush pressure with their teeth then German shepherds and Doberman switch was a big surprise for us and I can tell you from personal experience as a child I had my face ripped open by a toy poodle. It was an accident that little dog had been kicked by a horse, its owner my younger sister had put it in the horse arena with the horses and I ran out to save it grabbed it without thinking after you've been kicked and of course it bit me. I carried that scar for over 40 years until it finally disappeared needless to say doesn't look good on the female face when you've got two scars running down your most people want to know what dog bit you and you tell them oh a toy poodle. He said I was lucky it wasn't the medium because I probably would have had to have had major reconstruction of the bone luckily it was a toy.

We used to have a male Irish Setter. We once came home to witness a path of wreckage and blood between the dog bed and the window. My mom had forgotten to completely close a window which could be partially opened. The top part would open away (inside the room) from the windowsill at a 20/25 degree angle. Someone tried to open the window from the outside. From the wreck we could tell that our dog jumped on the kitchen table onto the cabinet that stood before the window and bit the person. There was blood splatters on the walls and ceiling and the dog chewed a good part of the window frame. He was such a sweetheart, but that day we got the answer on the good old question "Would your dog protect your house from a robber." Well, yes, he would. And from the blood splatter on the walls and window sill, the robber will most likely remembered it too.

As a setter owner…yes, this is accurate. Mine, generally, has one brain cell operating…and that is geared toward being crazy excited to meet all the peoples and dogs. He loves kids more than anything and all of his training will go out the window whenever we get close to a playground. I have seen setters be protective. Mine will go full on defensive of intact male dogs, when he see them from his yard and he will react to any hawk.

I had a Shiba Inu Chihuahua mix. He smiled a lot, stared, then "charged" straight at the fence a thief tried to crawl over. Totally on point with my Irish Setters with one tweak, they would be so excited to see you that they jump and throw themselves at you like they're dancing at a metal rock 🤘 concert. We have been blessed by 8 IS in our familyover the past 30 years, and no matter how hard we work on training, someone coming to the door has always been an occasion to have a mosh pit.

My Vizsla was like that. She was purebred but had a long hair mutation. Probably thought she was a Setter. She would jump to lick anyone coming in right in the face. Even if you were over 6 feet, she would climb up there.

What no one ever tells you about IS is how far they can jump. My IS loves to run down the stairs at full speed and use the momentum to jump just about to the top of the back door whenever she wants to go out. We're trying to train her to not do the whole sonic run down the stairs, as we don't want her hurting herself 😅

@sourdrop7390 We used to joke that one of our sweetest IS, Lincoln, just didn't understand the purpose for fences. She would jump even a 6 foot privacy fence so she could visit whoever was on the other side... sheep, goats, elk, people, etc... fences were Lincoln's footstools.

I swear my Shiba Inu is a demon, He will look at door and smile like Smile Dog and just stare at it for hours and then start barking scaring the heck out of me. Also at 3am yesterday he just stared under my bed. Not moving. For a literal hour. Then right as I almost fell asleep after I felt like I heard someone whisper in my ear saying turn around. 😅I am moving tomorrow UPDATE: I moved into a pretty nice house and my Shiba Inu immediately started acting clingy and normal. The house is really pretty and my siblings are helping me get set up!

My bulldog would gives you a 50/50 chance. It's either, "If I have to get up off this couch, everyone's getting a piece," or she wouldn't even wake up and the robber would leave due to her loud snoring and sleep apnea gasping.
